I'm wanting to replace my steering head bearings and looking in the service manual it says a race and bearing installer tool is needed. Has any one tried to replace the bearings on their own and what tools did you use? Any one know how much the HD tools are, (HD-39302, B-45521), or an after market alternative? |

The factory recommended tools are through Kent-Moore, and can be ordered from and H-D/Buell dealer. Also, Jims makes a good set of removers/installers. You can get the remover which is a race insert & driver handle, the installer is a slick setup that will press the races in. Check out www.jimsusa.com and check out their catalogue. When you are installing the bearings, be sure to really seat them in the races. Hope this helps. |

On the steel framed bikes, like the Sportster and the S2, I just use a piece of 1/2" copper pipe and a hammer to remove the races and use the old races as an intermediary to hammer the new ones in. I might be more reluctant to do that on an aluminum steering head, but maybe not. |
