Just an observation. About half the time when sitting at traffic stops as I put it into first it sounds like gear clash. Is it normal or an adjustment of clutch or something wrong? Thanks,John |

Do you guys flush the engine prior to switching to synthetic? I was gonna get my dealer to do this for me. Although I did think of just draining, filling with Mobil then quick run, drain again and re-fill. |

Gaz, I've changed to synthetic on all my bikes at first service and never flushed them. Never been an issue...John |

It will still do it. I think its just due to the inertia of heavy gears and clutch drag especially when the bike is cold and the oil heavier. My trick is pull the clutch in release it and then pull it in and drop the trans into first. Sounds funny, but works. xbolt12 |

It's just a new trans. It'll work itself in. I think I waited until about 2500 to change to synth in the transmission. One thing I've found that works wonders in keeping the trans feeling nice is to check the primary chain fairly often. |

I found mine makes noise if I try to downshift to first if I'm going to fast. I saw that Nallings Racing offers a Back Cutting service on the Gears for the XB that would help with this issue. I have a Honda Shadow Spirit 750 and it does that same thing. I've only noticed it on V-twin bikes that I've rode on. |

Ignorant alert! What's back cutting exactly? |

Why would back cutting the engagement dogs help in downshifting? I thought back cutting ensured positive gear engagement and cut down on missed shifts. Could you explain? |

Minimum allowable freeplay of clutch cable made big difference on city cross.Adjusted it at 160 miles , finds neutral easy again ,less of a first gear clash. Going to have to try that double clutch technique though! |

Your primary chain does most of its stretching in the first 500 miles. Sounds like you just need to adjust the tension. It's easy enough to do yourself, but your dealer will do it during the 500 mile service if you choose to take it in. |

Most shifting problems are caused by an incorrectly adjusted clutch. |

Always blip the throttle with the clutch pulled in before notching the bike into first gear. No more noise. As the engine speed starts to drop back down, shift resolutely into gear. Gotta get the dogs to dance together. |

Never ever shift hesitantly or gingerly. Always shift with resolve, like you are going to once and for all tell your wife that... Never mind. |
