I'm getting ready to do some polishing on the rear sprocket (pulley) and would like a few pointers on the best way to polish this piece. I would be more interested in a chemical stripping process than any grinding. (But grinding isn't out of the question.) Misato, rocketman, captainplanet, you out there?

If it were me, I find someone local who does anodizing.
They will strip it for about $15.00 or less.
I have been told you can use toilet bowl cleaner, but never
tried it.

After it's stripped, I start with 400 grit sand paper, before I start on the polishing wheel.

I did mine last time I changed tyres,simply used one of those small abrasive discs on my die grinder,sanded all the inside area,clear coated it afterwards,looksa outstanding,just like the factory diamond one!

Cool! That's what I'm after. Reading through the manual, I've gotta pull the wheel and bearings. I don't have the tool to pull the bearings but will get one if necessary. Is there any other method that might make this job a little easier? Also, does the layer of clear coat keep the metal looking better for longer? What if it weren't clear coated after the polishing?

If its done right, clear coat looks great.
S&H chrome does all my chroming and they
clear coat and powder coat too.
I tried it with a spray can, but it didn't
look as good as what they do.
Polished aluminum is a bear to keep up!!
If it wouldn't hurt the belt, think I'd
get it chromed, but then you can't ride
for two or three weeks.

Chrome would look S-H-A-R-P. I don't know if I'd make it 2-3 weeks wandering around aimlessly.

Oven cleaner takes anodizing off. Aircraft stripper takes powder coat off pretty easily, but be very careful with it. Here's a great link with a lot of info on how to polish aluminum. http://www.caswellplating.com/buffs/buffman.htm
There are a couple clear coats available for polished al now too. I know pur15 makes one, and another is zoop seal.

All I did was unbolt the pulley after I took the wheel off,put on bench, sand inside area,swirly,fine grit wheel,sprayed clear coat paint on,has been that way for 5k now,still looks perfect,and easy to clean!
