Hi, all. New to the group, picked up a leftover '03 9R in December and I've been riding the heck out of it, snow be darned! I'm less than thrilled with how high the engine is revving cruising at 75-80 or so on the highways, and I was thinking about changing the engine sprocket from the stock 34 teeth to 36 or 38. From what I'm not reading, it doesn't seem as though this is common. Has anyone had any experience doing this? Am I better off just changing the pulley on the secondary? Thanks! |

The Brits are required to have higher gearing because of fuel economy standards Don't know if the XB uses the same ratios as the Brits - but the swap on the tubers was a pretty common practice - a guy here wanting higher ratios would just swap gears with a Brit - and presto, cheapo - saves a couple hundred $$$ over new bits. There are a couple places that sell "extra speed" primary kits. |

the stock primary drive sprocket (engine) and chain from the XB 12 iS About 10% taller gearing, and will fit on the 9.its a bolt on affair, all oem parts, and with a new gasket and quart of trans oil should come in under 200 bucks. i dont think the 9 has the balls to push a taller gear however. cheep enough to experiment and see if you like it. |

by the way, welcome to the board, and i hope you are enjoying the heck out of the XB. the 9 that i rode did not mind running 80 at all, it was right about where i shifted up to 4th gear. |

On a twelve you "can" do 80 in second... I wouldn't do it for long, but it's 60, 80, 100, 120, ~140 as far as speed/gear. I'd still like to have a taller fifth or a sixth though... I just can't stand running ~5400RPM's at ~110MPH for too long. It makes me nervous, but that's what traffic does around here... |

I'd say get a Hayabusa or a Blackbird for commuting, and keep the XB for weekend fun. |

Yup FP there are a couple of areas around here that traffic averages 90-100 in packs. |

Yeah... 90-100 is probably more correct. I always try to stay 10 over traffic if it's not too heavy. I've been in a group of SUV's doing 115... Funny thing is about that stretch of road... It's basically either WFO or backed up due to a wreck... |
