I've seen this covered, but more specifically can you put a 2000 lightning swingarm on a 96 S-1 lightning? Is it a good idea? Would you use the 96 shock? What is the best aftermarket shock?I am bidding on a swingarm, so I hope I don't have this wrong. Fred

Yes to swingarm swap, can be done no sweat.Don't remember on the shock, hopefully someone else will.Best shock is up in the air,I have a Penske on one S-2 and had the Showa on the other redone by a suspension shop out here, both work well.YMMV.

Hi Fginn, I think it will work also but I'm not 100% positive. I'm also bidding on the same swingarm that you are for the same conversion on my 97 S1. Hodakaguy

Has anyone looked into the XB swingarm for the tube frame bikes?

Starting to some, but need parts to play with, and a spare frame, and money, and some dead engine cases, and new and old mounting blocks, and a machine shop, but yeah I'm looking into it.

Well the XB swing arm mounting is about 2 inches narower then the tubers.
SO you would have to make a whole new swing arm mountting block or get creative with the dowel pins that secure the tubers swing arm.

Tube frame shock mount is on the bottom of the swing arm, XB shock mount is on the top of the swing arm. This could be a problem.

New mounting block is assumed, the shock issue is the reason for the need of a spare frame to play with. No hurry so it's in the background with the other "someday but probably never" stuff. But still I think about it, what will be will be.

Half,
That won't be a problem as your new XB swing arm will now hold your Oil ; )

But the fill hole would be on the bottom and the swing arm brace will be on the left side. Not saying it will not work, just trying to think of all the obstacles.

Tony, they bolt up no sweat, but the rear frame down tubes on the S-2 will hit under heavy load/big bump scenario.

I am looking into the XB swingarm conversion, but I intend to have the spare XB swingarm I have fitted with the axle adjustment blocks to add up to 6 inches of length. There is no axle adjuster for the XB swingarm stock, so you would have to figure out how to add the tensioner as well, or like I am add the blocks to the swingarm like they use for the chain conversions on the race bikes. I am using the 6 inch blocks to get the swingarm length back to close to the stock tubers. For an S1 I might think of using only the 3 inch blocks but for an S3 which I am pondering the extra length will keep it closer to stock. You also need to figure out where to move the battery box at. The X1 you might get away with it in place, but not sure about the other Tubers. Pondered mounting the battery using an XB sealed batter in the stock shock mounting location but one good speedbump would make one hell of a mess...

With swingarm you will need the axle adjusters for that arm.If it comes with axle, good, but yours will work, just need a couple of washers. When fitting S/A to mounting block check for any interference between block and arm .I had to do very minor grinding on block.
If you are a lightweight and don't ride 2 up you will be good.I am 175 in swim suit and only tapped a couple of times when I had bags and hit big dips.

Two-Buells, what type of air cleaner is that on your S-1? I am trying to figure out what type is on my bike, it is oval aluminum backing plate, fastened at an angle, much like yours, but the cover says tnt motorsports and the cover is shaped triangle, sort of fits the the frame contour. It is fastened to the backing plate with one nylon screw, off center in the backing plate. Fred

For those interested in mounting an XB swingarm in place of the stock Tuber swing arm...The center to center length of the XB swingarm from pivot to axle is about 18.5 inches. The length of a tuber swingarm from pivot to the END of the swingarm is 19 inches. This means for the tire to clear, you will either have to make an idler puller like on the XB or use adjusting blocks with a longer belt or chain. It is NOT shorter as I had first thought. That was done rough comparison with a side by side visual. I got the spare XB swingarm in today and was able to actually take real measurements.

Tony, using all CAPS means your shouting, I am right here on the other side of the screen; )

Sure you could run chain and sprocket. I was just talking about if you wanted to continue running a quieter, less messy belt drive : )
