Hi guys, I'm new here but have been lurking for some time. I currently have a 1997 S1 Lightning and am considering buying a 2001 X1 from a local dealer. The bike is white with purple trim and has a purple frame. It has just 5k miles on it and has a pipe and has had the fuel system re mapped.

Are there any common problems with this year/model? Anything I should look for?

I wasn't sure this was an old school question, but it is still a tube framed model so perhaps you can help. Thank You--Rob

Calbuell
mostly the usual
rocker box gaskets, efi issues, air box issues
I suggest you check the wheel related threads
depending on wheels there may be issues

i have had some minor wiring problems,
head light ground seprates mid length at night
key switch fail at 10k, some pinging & knocking

If you are like most of us you will "adapt it"
to your tastes and likely solve the issues.

one word on the fuel system the 01 ecm is not
remapable, according to dyno jet. Mine was re maped (box re placed)

We have 5 options on the efi,
Stock [latest rev is "k"],
Stock with a control modifier(PC3 or Techlusion
The race box,
MAD-EFI,
Get rid of it an replace with a carb..

the agravating thing on the efi is when its working its kick a$$ for stock to mild motors
when its sick thank God for this board and its users

and Welcome!

Calbuell,
I just went over 25K on my 2001 , which started out Arctic White/Nuke blue like the one your looking at. It now orange/nuke blue.

I had the same issues as OldDog, rocker box gaskets (replaced rocker covers with XB covers, end of problem). Added the Race ECM and Forcewinder intake. I now have the Wileyco exhaust. The bike runs great, other problems include primary side crank seal, if it goes you will get tranny fluid all over the right side of the rear fender (hugger).

The biggest issue I had was it would run really rich and foul plugs. 3 Dealers couldn't figure it out, but then Badweb to the rescue. It was a bad Engine temp sensor. 34.00 later I was back in business.

you can see my bike here in white or in orange

Good luck
Matt

Cal, Check the KV, topic "recalls" to see which ones apply to your bike and find out if they've been addressed.

Cal...Love my X1 to no end. With the knowledge obtained from the BWB and the X1 Files ( http://www.saintjohn.nbcc.nb.ca/Marriott/x1/ ) I was able to identify and correct potential problems before they caused me any financial pain.

As you are looking at a 2001 Model, most of the things I did to my bike have been already corrected and you should be good to go.

When in doubt, check the profiles of the X1 owners on the BWB to see what they have done.

All in all, it is a great bike that does everything I want it to well. Take one for a test ride and I believe you will discover this as well.

Cap't
No recalls on the 2001 model, it comes stock with the updated primary chain tensioner, new style showa shock, and updated shifter. I think its the only X1 that didn't get recalled.

7500mi on mine (nuclear blue/white),and had a rocker box leak, and a failed O2 sensor; both fixed under warranty. The service manual (a highly reccommended purchase) indicates that a lot of upgrades (oil pump, rear isolators, for example) were made for this model year. Love the machine! Enjoy!!

I drive a 99 model. Great bike. Good performance, GREAT fuel economy (especially given the performance level), comfy for me, and looks good. Not sure I'd take a long trip on it, but then again I'm not much into long distance riding anyway.

Well, I bought it today...It is the White/Purple model and I got a break on the interest rate by buying the two year warranty. It basically paid for itself.

I didn't get to test ride it or even bring it home due to the fact that it started raining, and I chose not to.

Now I am wondering about it being re mapped. It has the Buell cf air cleaner on it and a Vance and Hines pipe if I remember right and sounded really crisp when fired up.

This dealership has been as good as gold to me so far as my S1 has been concerened so I'm not too worried about anything.

So now it seems that I have two of the beasts to take care of and enjoy. Thanks for all the advice, pictures soon---Rob

CONGRATS!

interesting post by Matt. With the dyno curve that you posted for your bike there is little difference in the out put curves between our bikes, mine lacks the "race" box [ see force winder in old school or force winder in the KV

I think that My cht sensor is going south
thanks for the post

Ride safe

I have a 2001 X1 and have NO ISSUES except the rocker box gaskets...heck if I didn't have that issue, I'd have felt unloved! It's less of a problem and more like a right of passage.

Mine is white and nuke blue.

Somebody please help. I have a 99' X1 and the ignition switch went bad and now I am working with the Sierra Vista H-D and I am waiting for now a month for the ignition switch. Here in Arizona I feel like the Varsity QB with a broken leg with everyone else is out playing! Has anyone else had problems with their ignition switch?

Bedellb:

YEP on the switch problem, mine went south at 10k.
If you don't care if you carry a different switch key then read on.
Check Custom Chrome site also check with American Sport Bike Al has made a post somewhere on this
I got mine $31.00 on line Part of the wait from the dealer is the rekeying of the round lock

You will have to open the hole in the dash up a little and transplant the harness connector off of the original switch to the wires of the new one, in my area the X1 switch is over 100.00$ to the dealer. don't try narrowing the neck of the switch. There are a lot of little bitty things in there. The booger is opening up the oblong slot in the dash. Mine is billet and I did not have access to a "bridgeport" If you go that route one last thing solder the connector wiring rather than butt splice it

OR do the deal with FMJ and you can do it in about 10 minutes your self

I hope that this was of some use

CalBuell,
If you have the Vance and Hines muffler and Carbon Fiber race air cleaner pull your seat off and check the ECM. Its a black box right next to the oil filler cap with 2 sets of wires plugged into it. It should say "FOR RACE USE ONLY" on it. If it doesn't you need to get the race ECM immediately! DaveS at Appleton Buell can get you one for around $200 and it is the best money you can spend on your X1.

What pick are you looking for? I can tell ya that I have a '99 X1 and the part number if you need it. I have been in contact with Buell Customer Service and they are personally looking into it. Thank you very much for offering the switch to me and as things are going it might not be off the table yet!

I just purchased a 2002, X1 with 1600 miles on it over Ebay. When it was delivered, I think it fouled a plug because I couldn't get it started. Because I didn't know the history, I took it to my Harley Dealership and asked them to do the 1000 mile service, with a compression and leak test. Also, I think there is a front shock recall that they are going to do.

It has a D&D exhaust. I looked under the seat and the ECM had a BRAG sticker on it. I was told that it had a racing ECM, but I did not see the "race only" letters on the box. I didn't have tools with me to see if what I was looking at was a metal cover for the ECM or the actual unit.

Were the rocker box gasket problems fixed for the 2002 model? Are there any other problems that were not addressed by the 2002 year?

Thanks.

Was hoping for picture of offending part so I can compare to what I have in my parts bin.I don't remember what assortment of stuff it came in ,just that it was from an eBay auction I got some other parts I needed from.

Firemanjim,
The offending part is where the key goes in the ignition. Once you turn the key, you are suppose to get the DDFI self test, the headlight, and the neutral light...all of which I do not. However I do get the electric odometer to turn on which I believe is a separate system or "notch" on the key system.
As far as a picture, my computer will not upload images at this time but should be up in running in a couple of days.

FMJ:
The '01 switch has 3 lines to it, all red and something with a 4 place black plastic connector. My original part said HD fxd or something like that.
the replacement switch would need to make the power line and one of the 2 lines out in the center position (park) and both lines to power in the run position.

I may want to retract the $31 switch idea the one I have put on my bike has become "crunchy"
in operation any one ever put "white" grease in one ?

The part came in today guys. The Sierra Vista H-D dealership made me pay for the part; however, the ate the cost of the labor. Funny thing was that originally they were going to charge me about and hour and a half of labor but when they said they were going to eat the cost...it was done in 30 minutes! Oh well, I am happy and just glad that I am on the road again!

I have an 02 X1 Lightning only has 1500 miles, I've never had any probs so far, But i'm looking into getting the D&D exhaust w/race ECM, I know you just got the bike w/all included, But can you give me some Idea on how it sounds and Performs? I'm totally stock right now..except for Gutted airbox, Which made a slight difference, I could tell right away it boosted some hp.

sounds like you might want to find another dealer
1.5 hours to change a switch?, If I pay attention I think 30 minutes is a about right worst case: 4 screws take off the fly screen, 1 ring nut, 1 plastic connector, switch off and then reverse procedure on If you are careful you don't have to take the screen off.
Glad that you got your ride back,
Would you mind me asking what the cost of the switch was?

I WD40ed the switch I bought less crunchy

Harley,

I dropped off the bike at the dealership to have them check for a fouled plug and do a 1000 mile dealer service (just to be safe), and then went out of town for a week. I will be back in Montana to pick it up this Saturday.

I did speak with the service department on my cellphone today and they said that they were able to start it up just fine. They told me that several of their service techs are very impressed with the "hotrod" sound of the bike with the D&D pipe. They said that as good as it sounds, it likely has had other modifications--maybe a cam.

I can't wait to get back to Montana to pick up my bike. I bought it on ebay on 3-22. I picked it up at a shipping dock on 3-31, and immediately transported it to the dealership for the service and to find out why I couldn't get it started.

I probably paid more than retail for it, but it is in fantastic condition. And if the mods have been done that I am finding out about, I am happy with my purchase.

It has a carbon fiber windscreen. I am looking at purchasing in carbon fiber a tank cover, front fender, tank trim (for when I change the airbox), and belly pan to change the bike trim from white to black carbon fiber.

My new X1
