Hey, finally got my S1 out for a bit today, the first time since I wrapped the rear pipe. (I hated that crappy heat shield) Anyway, the wrap is smoking like a mofo and it reeks like it's gonna burst into flames at any minute. I assume this stuff was coated or something, how long will it take to settle in, or was I scammed on the wrap, and it IS in fact going to burst into flames?

Naw, dude it's fine. It'll smell for quite some time. The smoke is just the wrap off-gassing. Yer doin fine.

dont worry, mine said it may smoke slightly,, so i opened the double garage door,, man were they wrong. by the time i got the bike out side you would have sworn the garage was on fire. surprised they didnt show up. after the smoke died down enough i got on and started riding to burn it in, feel sorry for any one who followed me that day.. the smell lasts for quite a while.

Of course it was silver and sticky. It's more black and sticky (actually runny) on both sides now... it was the best stuff the guy at the hardware store said they had.
I already experienced the smoke screen effect today, took it over to the car wash to spray down the road grunge, people were looking at me like I was hosing down the fifth horse of the Apocalypse. Me rikey exhaust wrap! I only did the section the crappy heat shield covered, but I'm tempted to do the whole thing now, well, maybe not the headlight....

I've got laugh, I have been thinking for weeks about wrapping my m2. Today I just sort of kinda made up my mind to do it, seeing this post seals the deal. I don't write much but I'm here all the time, I always find good info at bad web. Thank you fellas.

Q: How long does the wrap last and does it fade to a dingy cotton look with age? If so how often do you have to re-wrap it. I think I read here that wrapping your pipes will cause them to rust like a mutha. I am assuming wrap is inexpensive. Thank you Ken

Had mine wrapped now for three years. Still looks great. The smoke is a result of the powdered resin impregnated into the wrap that the heat causes to cure and yes smoke a lot. It helps hold the wrap in place and protects it somewhat.

When washing, try to avoid focusing a direct stream of water on the wrapped headers, especially with a pressure washer; it will remove the resin.

I think what someone viewed as excessive rust was merely discoloration and a bit of light surface corrosion that you eventually see on stainless steel Buell headers even without wrap.

I can't really see moisture getting trapped for very long, it should burn off, unless you constantly leave it in the rain without riding it.
I'm waiting fer mine to settle in a bit more, then I was going to treat it with that spray stuff. Do you guys think high heat paint would work too?

most the time the discoloration isnt the rust. its minerals and other deposits form the water and road grime baking on to the stainless header pipe. some of it can be removed by boiling the header. some people dont have a problem with this but i live in western ny. where you can get a couple feet of white crap in a day! and that just the salt they dump on the roads!!!!!you should see the snow!!! but all that stuff kinda gets held on and bakes into the pipe. boil it ,, re polish it,, and your good to go. had mine raped with black for a couple seasons, still looks fine but the black bakes out of the wrap. gonna wrap my new header this year i think,, old one was damaged when i got it .. hence wrapping it.. ps to you guys about to wrap, make sure you leave a little clearance at the top of the pipe to get you sockets on the nuts, mine was a little tight, . hope some of this helps.
