I'm looking at this Billet Spin-on Oil filter that mounts between your engine and filter. You can see it here at: http://www.billetcool.com/a299sereis.htm Anyone running one of these? If so how good does it work? I can't use the Jag oil cooler becouse of my banke brace and steering dampner are in the way. Any idea how many deg. it actually reduces the oil temp? Thanks in advance. what about running the longer oil filters and attaching a jag to the banke brace itself. the longer filter holds more oil, and has more filter area and more outside surface exposed to the air to cool the oil, kinda like your entender but a hell of a lot cheeper. ive always run the longer filter. just like the thought of them. |

Long long ago in a thread far far away I had read that adding an oil cooler really didn't do any good for you. Is there a reason you want one? |

Yes, it (an oil cooler) DOES actually do some good, for some more than others depending on your locale, obviously. Personally I doubt the "spin-on" coolers are little more than a cheap toy. No doubt you could get the same effect by rigging a shroud and blast tube to your oil filter. The Jagg and Spurgin coolers, on the other hand, actually work and are reported to lower temps by as much as 30 degrees in some instances. Hodakaguy, the new Jaggs mount horizontally to the forward engine link and might clear your steering damper and Banke brace. Check the American Sport Bike website. The Spurgin mounts back by your left heel and also shouldn't get in the way. My brother runs an old-style (vertical) Jagg on his M2 and it does not interfere with his Banke Brace at all. |

Let alone I've read some stories of the oil filter backing off and oil spewing out. Some users had to zip tie the filter so it wouldn't turn. I'd imagine given that the filter sticks out farther there's more vibration on it. |

I'll check out the new Jagg mount and the Spurgin cooler. It gets well over 100 deg here in the summer and I'd like a cooler just for piece of mind. Which is the better between the jagg and spurgin cooler? I like the built in thermostat in the spurgin but you could just get a cover to install on the jag when its cold. I'm not sure yet if I like the looks of the spurgin filter, I'll have to look at a few more pics. THanks, Hodakaguy (Message edited by hodakaguy on March 15, 2005) |

The Jagg has the thermo in the oil filter adapter and now that it mounts in front on the Buell tuber frame models as opposed to the sides, IMO it's a better cooler. Better is relative of course. (Message edited by bubabuell on March 15, 2005) |

The Spurgin's looks grew on me. I like the fact that it's up and out of the way and not vulnerable to lowside damage. It also comes complet with the thermostat and braided steel hose. I definitely plan on getting one. |

From what I have learned over the years, the Jagg and Spurgin are the best and the finned sleeve over the oil filter not so effective. If you are looking for other simple, less expensive alternatives, check out the oil coolers at www.jpcycles.com . Lots to choose from that will help but I still think you will be happier with with either Jagg or Spurgin. |

JAGG mounted horizontally on the frame tube next to the battery. Manual bypass by JAGG. Oil temp indicator on the dash. Gives me the control over the coolers use. The temp is taken at the oil bag feed to the engine. |

Question about the Jagg. The Model 1390 they show on their website looks like something that belongs on my Wish List, but the photograph doesn't do it justice. Do the oil lines to the cooler interfere with R&R'ing the oil filter? It looks like it would cause a mess without disconnecting the lines at the cooler during each filter change. Any feedback from the experienced??? |

Anyone have some good pics of the Jagg oil cooler and the Spurgin cooler they could post? Thanks, Hodakaguy |

Hodakaguy, I used to use one of those spin on coolers. Actually worked pretty well, but I didn't like how far my filter hung out in front of the motor, especially using a larger filter. Also was a B*TCH getting off because I used a thread lock on it to make sure it wouldn't back out on me. I use a vertical JAGG now and am more than satisfied with it. The vertical cooler should work with a frame brace without any problems...I know that question has been asked and answered before. |

Here's a pic of the Spurgin. I think I recall that this cooler has difficulty fitting certain tube frames. Check carefully for your application. http://www.motorcycle-innovations.com/ |

Outrider, I had the same question but never did get a satisfactory answer. Does look like a P.I.T.A. the way the hoses are routed (on the NEW Jaggs). The thermostatic bypass on the Jagg is, I believe, plastic and rather cheaply made, according to my brother. He suggests replacing it with an aluminum bypass available from Lockhart-Phillips, among others. As for damaging the cooler in a lowside, I don't think it would be any more vulnerable than the standard XB cooler. I wouldn't let it stop me from installing one anyway, Hodakaguy. I've heard from several guys running the Spurgin cooler about a condition known as "hotfoot"...I probably don't need to explain. I don't have a cooler yet; I will be going with the Jagg but I'm actually considering looking for a (N.O.S.) old-style cooler- I like it better. |

CaptainKirk...Thanks for the feedback. Will look into the Jagg model further and give it some mental engineering time. LOL |

I must enquire if it is worth fitting an oil cooler. My reasoning is that they do not function when the bike is stationary (ie - traffic lights)which may well be when cooling of the oil is most required. Just a thought for consideration . cheers Brian |

I doubt you'd need one in England, but spend a summer riding in 100 degree temps here in Georgia and you might change your mind. The factory saw fit to equip the XB with a cooler - there must be some merit to having one. I just think they look cool and racy, myself. |

the spurgin dropped oil temps danred near 30 degress F on a 90+ day at the track, and does have a small benefit (approx 5 degrees F) while stationary in traffic -- just data for the decision makers |

All: I have the jagg the oil lines are in the way for filter change. Mine must be an earlier model as there is no T-stat in the spin on just a baffel. I have a temp gauge and may bypass mine to gather some data this summer. This is an interesting discussion, BTW capt'n as I read to the end of the thread had a nice visual of some poor soul on his hands and knees at a light blowing // through\ his cooler LOL! I was talking with American Sport Bike yesterday and he said the Jagg isn't available with a thermostat, just the in line valve so you can shut it off manually. I was over at a friends house yesterday though and looked at his Jagg setup on his Harley. He's running a Jagg cooler with a in line thermostat made by Harley. Pretty nice setup. The Harley thermostat looks about the size and shape of the in line Jagg valve. He said he thought a spin on adapter was available now through harley with a built in thermostat, kinda like the one that comes with the Spurgin cooler. Might be worth looking into. It would be nice to have a thermostat so you don't have to baby the oil temp all the time. Hodakaguy |

I put a Billet Cool spin-on oil filter on my 1997 S3 one year when I was on long term TDY to Washington DC. My daughter came up to visit me and I took her on a long ride around town. It was hot, humid, the traffic was heavy and the bike clearly wasn't liking it. We got home OK, but it was then that I bought the Billet Cool. I had no further overheating problems on that trip or ever since. My experience is that it is an effective and foolproof product. |

I use a Lockhart...similar in design to the Jagg. I use the Jagg bypass valve and an oil cooler adapter I got from Jeggs. Budgeted to the max...but it works at a fraction of the price. |

My mistake. I thought the new Jaag cooler did have the thermo built in. But I am pretty sure that someone (Hillbilly, Force) sells the thermo style spin on filter mount separately so you could use it in conjunction with the Jaag if you so desired. |

Oldog, How do you like that cooler setup compared to the vertical Jagg? It looks like you run the risk of catching a stone from the front tire and puncturing the cooler. I've been looking for a front fender extender to cut down on the grime thrown up on the front of the motor and voltage regulator and have been looking at that new Jagg setup, but just not sure about that new location. |
