Just finished my second track day, and I noticed a few things... I don't normally run the engine hard for very long, but today it definitely got a workout. I've never had much if any discoloration at muffler outlet. I'm running totally stock, with a cut 12 airbox, 6k miles. At the end of the day I have a light dusting of black exhaust soot at the outlet of the muffler. Also, while the engine is revved, but not under load (letting off the gas or going to engine braking) I noticed that I'm getting that "pop-pop-pop-pop-pop" coming from the muffler. I hear it on the big race bikes all the time, but I'm not used to hearing it from mine. Are these normal characteristics for any engine at high output, or are these symptoms of a tuning imbalance or something? Also, on a side note, everyone check your rear master brake cylinder. After about 40 minutes on the track I noticed that the cap was just sitting on the cylinder, not screwed down at all. It's a miracle I didn't lose it. And the bike handled wonderfully, I totally see how easy it is to catch just about any bike in the curves, most people could only pull away from me in the straights. It was GREAT! |

Discolouration of the exhaust and the headers would have been accelerated at the track compared to on the street. The heat pattern doubled on my header first track session. Also at the track your spending heaps of time with the throttle wide open so heaps of gas getting in there and the by-products of gas are heat and soot. The popping your getting is part of the character of the bike. Dunno why they do it but mine has done it from day 1. Throw a race kit on and it'll be even louder. Carbed bikes usually do it cause they are running lean dunno why the FI Buells do it. Maybe someone who has added fuel to the midrange would be able to confirm if the popping was cured. |

Yup, mine pops'n'crackles when it's not under power and as engine braking etc... Have the stock ECM, but running the TFI, 12 airbox (no snorkle) K&N Filter and a Jardine RT.1 When it's fully warmed up, it has some scary acceleration in the high RPM range. But love it.. |
