I was just wondering if cutting all but the part over the filter on the airbox is a good idea. I think It would look cool under the hero blue cover. will I get too lean or will I be OK. I plan to get the TFI soon and it isnt to warm here yet. It is starting to get nice out and I dont want to kill my bike. I have a K@N and jardine pipe. | ||

If its not running lean now ,with current mods, it's probably ok with a cut airbox. | ||

I have a dyno plot of my XB9SX with the cut airbox and the stock ECM and stock exhaust, but race filter. I have fuel air plots as well. At no point does it go dangerously lean. | ||

Some people cut their airbox - I like what Cow has - and American Sport Bike has a kit on their site - depends on if you want to chop yours up or keep it - just in case  http://www.americansportbike.com/shop/cgi-bin/cp-app.cgi?usr=51F4083990&rnd=8931 082&rrc=N&affl=&cip=&act=&aff=&pg=prod&ref=9304&cat=new&catstr=HOME:new  03-05 XB Series Open Airbox Conversion Kit, includes air filter top plate (with XB12 style inverted nipple over the velocity stack), retention HW, and breather re-routing supplies (minus breather filter). Uses Breather holes in lower airbox plate with some supplied HW for clamping down the filter, so no new holes are drilled in the airbox. Perfect companion for a 9006CIA airbox cover to really let your XB really breathe. Recommend terminating breather line with a 5641 K&N Breather Filter. Price: $56.95 | ||

That was all on a pretty young motor, it feels like it has loosened up since then. It does show that it does not go *that* lean after you cut the airbox though. Awesome. If you did that by hand, i want you to come over and do my air box cover. I am afraid to cut holes in my outer cover, for fear of totally messing up and then having to buy one for a hundred some odd dollars. | ||

Thanx! Yea I did it by hand. Takes a while, only have one side done. Waiting for another snowy day to do the other side. Then I'll have to do something to my wife's bike. Lpd22, I think they are around $30 or $40 so go for it! P.S. thanx for being a vet! g u s | ||

Gus- Sorry, I should of explained better. I am talking about cutting the outer cover(like a ram air), the one that costs 206.00. I have already cut up my 12 air box. I wasn't too worried about it because no one is going to see it on my bike(now the outer cover is a different story). Thanks | ||

Gus- what did you use to cut your air box? I used an air die cutter. It wasn't a really clean cut on plastic so i had to sand a lot, to get the edges smooth. | ||

I used a couple of dremils, one hand held, one remote cable one. I used the sanding drums to sand and get the nice edges on the wings, the photo shows it's rough, but it's not bad. g u s | ||

Here is my XB9R, I will post pics after I take some this weekend. She is dirty from the first 150 mile test run with the D&D through the Wine Country! So I'm going to clean, wax and take some pics this weekend. It does not get in the way of my legs, and I can't hear it over my D&D!!  | ||

Lpd22- Well, since I cut the airbox out completely, and cut the holes in the cover while also adding a D&D and TFI, I'm not sure!!! Now it's a kick in the pants. Loud, and will pull the front off by just stabbing the throttle!! Love it, and the picture doesn't do it justice. I basically taped everything up, Measured and drew a grid, and then I drilled some holes, used a hack saw blade and a dremel tool. After I rough cut it, I used a air die grinder to grind away the rest. Then I filed and sanded it. A Lot of work, but it turned out nice. | ||

Best explained by airplaines...the air travels faster over the top, creating less pressure...which is why the air underneath creates the lift required. So in theory the air passing over the tank will cause air to get pulled out of, not in to, the airbox shown above by NewXB9er...wouldn't show up on a dyno, but technically at speed on the street might just raise it's nasty head. Ok, I'll bite. Now for some physics! That is correct, and I didn't think of that. But, the intake creates it's own vacuum. I would love to be able to figure out how much vacuum is created at lets say, 65mph. I can say when I'm doing about 70, I can put my hand over the hole and feel the suction. I don't think the wind is creating much vacuum. |
