I am only able to buy a used bike but I do not know what is considered high or low mileage for a bike. What is low mileage? With proper care, how long is the engine deisgned to last? Thanks for the help. Bob | ||

To me, "low mileage" is 3500 or less. I would not hesitate to buy a bike in clean condition with 7500 miles. Looking at the cleanliness of a bike tells me alot about the owner and the internal condition of the bike. | ||

I bought mine in December for $4500 with 7000 miles on it. Needed some work though. Low mileage really depends on where you are. I'm originally from North Dakota. Shorter riding season, so 3500 miles a year is pretty normal. I easily expect to put more miles than that on mine now being in Virginia. | ||

This is scary. When I was looking for my other bike, under 30,000 was low mileage (for a BMW). If well maintained, there are not a lot of "wear" items -tires, plugs, belt, and brake pads are all that come to mind. I believe miles are a factor, but should below in priority to documentation of maintenance, cleanliness of mechanics, nature of rider (squidly or respectful), evidence of damage repairs, and results of a mechanical inspection...even if it is just checking the plugs for color. If you are not a mechanic, it is worth the $75 for an hour of a dealer mechanic's time to give it a once over before sealing the deal. | ||

As a reference, i recently purchased a used xb9r with 1900 miles. It was a private purchase. The guy was asking 6,000. He was looking to move it since he had already bought another bike (BMW R1150R). I haggled a bit and paid a little bit less that that. We were both happy. The bike was very clean and had a number of options I like already on it(Heli bars, touring seat, lower pegs, crg levers). Also it did not have any engine modifications which I also preferred. This made the bike even more valuable to me. However,it had a vibration in the front end, but having lurked on this board for about 2 years I knew that there was a very good chance all it needed was the head bearings tighten/ re-torqued. So i didn't let that stop me from the purchase I contacted Daves who sent me the service and parts manual. Daves is great guy to do business with. ALso got first hand info from the knowledge vault and great tips from other guys on this web page, and did the job myself. Problem fixed. They are great bikes with a lot of character. They are a blast to ride. Also,when parked they seem to draw a crowd..little icing on the cake Good luck... |
