Author Message   Navygunner Posted on Monday, February 28, 2005 - 07:12 pm:        I just picked up my first nail in my rear tire. I'm thinking no big deal. I pull the tire off after RTFM with no problems. Get it patched. Install without a hitch till I go apply the rear brakes. Of course I pumped it up after reinstalling the caliper and it seemed strong till I apply it for the road test. It know feels spongy and I can literally stand on it and not lock the rear wheel. Anybody have any ideas what I can do. I did not lose any fluid in the process so I don't feel I need to bleed it. The best guess I have would be to bleed it to take out the spongy feeling but since I didn't lose any fluid I don't think it will help. Any suggestions?   1badxb Posted on Monday, February 28, 2005 - 08:14 pm:        make sure the caliper is clean. if the bike has many miles it is possible that the piston was alittle dirty and when the piston got pushed back in the dirt is makin the seal that pulls the piston back or lets it stay all the way out hang up alittle. just a thought. try some good brake parts cleaner   Rubberdown Posted on Monday, February 28, 2005 - 08:15 pm:        Did you get something oily on the pads?   Navygunner Posted on Monday, February 28, 2005 - 08:16 pm:        nope.   Texascolt45 Posted on Monday, February 28, 2005 - 09:33 pm:        i made the same mistake when i changed my rear tire.look at the caliper as you step on the brake and see if its flexin.i cross threaded the front pin bolt thing and it had the caliper cocked.the threads are really fine and it was easy to mess up.good thing is the caliper was only about a 100 bucks.can't say for sure but thats what was wrong with mine.   Dcmortalcoil Posted on Monday, February 28, 2005 - 09:33 pm:        Did you remove the rear caliper off to remove the rear tire? If so, you may have twisted the brake line and got some air seepage. Brakes go soft not because you lose fluid, but rather because air gets in the line or caliper. I'm sure bleeding will take care of the problem. I had the same problem with the front and rear brakes.
