It could be a fraud or something cool ,I just do not have any research material. The seller is no help. I have over 500 mags but not that issue! http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=4529406420&ss PageName=STRK:MEWA:IT |

if they are for real that could be an interesting item to own (though it needs a good clean up for sure) |

I think I may have that issue somewhere, but I haven't seen it for over 20 years. If I recall correctly, it's not an XR, but an XL with prototype Sputhe heads. If you think this may be the issue you are looking for, I'll try and dig it up next week. PM me if you'd like. Danny |

Hey, I followed to ebay link and saw the engine. I do have the issue you're looking for. Give me a few days and I'll see if I can find it and send you a copy of the cover and article. The XL/R Sputhe bike didn't have any Cafe bodywork in that issue like the seller is describing. |

How about contacting Sputhe directly, they seem to enjoy their history: http://www.sputhe.com/scrapbook717.html |

Mikej, I emailed Sputhe them last night, no reply yet. The auction is over in a few days.I think there is something not quite right. Djkaplan, Is this bike on the cover as a cafe? |

Glendale AZ is next to Phoenix, maybe one of the Arizona folks could run over to the guy's place and check it out. Probably too short of notice to arrange a visit. |

"Djkaplan, Is this bike on the cover as a cafe?" I remember this issue pretty well. The bike is not shown with any bodywork on the cover of the magazine or in the article itself. It was a nice looking black Harley with an XR frame, seat and an XLCR style tank. It did have clip-ons and rearsets and was a real racing motorcycle. The ebay guy pretty much states that his engine is not the one in the article - it's supposed to be like the one in the article. I won't be able to dig up the article before the auction is over. I have to find it in storage. |

Djkaplan,,, I don't know ,it could be taken either way, kind of misleading. Quote..."This same engine was installed in a pro built Cafe racer XR 750 type chassis with cafe body work." |

I would take it to mean an engine built just like that one was the one in the article. |

Alann Sputhee writes,,I sold the heads and cylinders to a guy in Colorado in 1980. He never did much with it. Eventually the guy in AZ ended up with it. He builds race car replicas. I don't know the condition of the engine except that the Blue Magmum carbs don't work well. As you can see it has a breather case and kick start. The're are no spare heads or cylinders avalible. If you buy it don't expect me to hold your hand. Another E-bay dead end , it was kind of a fun research project thanks everyone ! |

Gotta love the direct honesty of Sputhe: "If you buy it don't expect me to hold your hand. " |
