I will post more info on this later but I have found a complete LED tail lamp the same shape as our XB's. The part is available at most Harley dealers and is only $64.00 Canadian !! Once you take out the circuit board containing the LED's it just pops right in behind the stock tail lamp lens (A little bit of work to make it secure). And Voila !! |

thx. thought maybe the manufacturer would have a copyright notice back there. Do half the LEDs light for running lights, and the other half come on for brake lights? |

No blinkers guys. All of the LED's light up for running lights, when you r hit the brakes they just get alot brighter. I am trying to track down the packaging for a part # |

While it may be cheaper then the one American Sport Bike sells, I really DOUBT that is nearly as bright, and obviously does not have the blinkers built in, but to each there own. Mine from American Sport Bike is so bright in fact, that at night, in the street in front of my house, I light up the stop sign over a quarter of a mile down the block!! EVERYONE I know who has followed me has said the same thing, that it is so bright, the only way you could miss it is to be blind! Thanks to Al and the team, and Porker good find, but do not take this wrong, you do get what you pay for, and thats all I am saying. Those look like regulars board mount LED's, and as such their leads were never intended for a sever service vibration environment. But I do like the plate assembly, does look very beefy and rigid. I guess I will stop rambling now!! Bruce |

Quite bright, more so than a single conventional bulb, also lower power consumption which isn't so important but is nice from a techy angle. LEDs are also quite robust as they are solid state devices so the only mechanical failure mode is them coming undone from their wiring. They do have a long but finite, not sure the exact figures imagine it can be found with some research, lifetime though and will fail individually which could be crummy as you once you lose a few your light assembly will look somewhat ghetto till you replace either the whole assembly or find some replacement LEDs of the same spec and solder them in place. one other thing about leds-being former law enforcement i can tell you they are NOT d.o.t. approved in all places.just depends on the guy in the patrol car behind you. |

LEDs also turn on faster than conventional bulbs because they don't have to heat up a filament first. Anything that gives the driver behind you more time to react is good in my book. |

LEDs also have rather a reduced viewing angle compared to bulbs. If I stand right behind my bike the brake lamp hurts my eyes, but a few feet to the side, and I can hardly see it. (I have one of those 24 LEDs in one bulb shaped packages fitted.) |

The turnon time issue is non trivial, I did the calculations a while back, and at 60 mph I think it translates to something like having an extra 18 feet of stopping distance for the car behind you. |

The integrated LED assy that Bruce (Rr_eater) referred to is in another class from other LED products I've seen. The LED type is quite different than the old style LEDs that you see in that inexpensive one above. The old style ones use tall lensing, which is one of the reasons they are bright straight behind them but not so bright off-axis. The ones used in the one that Bruce has on his here still has lensing, but they are built much differently and are both brighter on AND off axis. On the timing issue, it's real. I have both regular incandescent turn signals AND the integrated turn signal tail light on the shop XB. The turn signals are activated at the same time, the LED one comes on, then the incandescent one "slowly" (relatively speaking) glows to full brightness afterwards. It's actually a pretty cool effect, kind like a 1970 Cougar with sequential turn signals. Same thing happens at turn off. The LED turns off instantly, then the incandescent bulb decays exponentially. Most users of the integrated tail will remove their turns signals all together, but since the shop XBS is a product showcase bike, I have both. And like I said, it does look kinda cool to have the sequential operation look. I have no doubt that the integrated tail with a clear lens is NOT DOT compliant. There are separation and turn signal lens size requirements that I'm sure are not met. That said, a cop would need to be a total A$$hole to give you a ticket for using it, as the brightness of both the turn signals and brake lights are incredible. I've said it before, none of the pictures I can show do them justice, the brightness completely screws up the Camera CCD color imaging. It's like trying to take a picture of the sun. Al |

To step in and support Al directly here , The clear lens he sells as well helps the off Axis illumination, but I am telling you, at night when you apply the brake coming to a stop, the off-axis lighting is so great, that you can see the shoulders of the road on each side in your peripheral vision! I do not work for or have anything to gain from Al at American Sport Bike. I am a member of the US Navy, who takes Al and his company’s opinions and views to improve my safety seriously. I agree, if an officer of the law gives me a ticket for this tail light set up, I would fight it tooth and nail, with the bike in court, JUST to hear the judge or officer try and admit the modification did NOT add to the operator’s safety. I am sure I would still get the ticket do to the lack of DOT engraving (hmmmmmmm), but I would make my point none the less. Al is right; they are not your regular LED's, that’s for sure. They are more square and about a 1/4" square, bright as all get out. I supplement them with LP side indicators as well, and Al is right, it looks weird because the taillight lights, then the side indicators, and same tuning off. It is an attention getter, that there is no doubt. And if DOT is your sole worry, put the factory light lens back on, it’s still REALLY bright, and now DOT approved!! lol Bruce |

After reading some of the posts I would have to agree that these lights are probably not as bright as the other ones but for $300.00 less it's a good alternative for those that aren't made of money. I have tried out my new lights and found that recessing them a little helps with the off axis illumination as well as the fact I fabricated a polished aluminum reflector plate that fits around the circuit board which makes the off axis a non issue. I might add I was blown away with the brightness compared to the stock bulb. Just to clarify though, if I had the cash I would indeed buy the light from American Sports Bike.I am planning to buy there Clear lens as well. |

All right all you techies. Couldn't one go down to radio shack, buy a board and some high intensity LED's and solder it up? I'm sure some resistors or other like electric equipment would be needed to regulate voltage and such, (not literate on the subj, can you tell). But wouldn't the garden variety electronics store have everything you need, for pennies? I'm not trying to undercut Al here, because there will always be people who are willing to do it themselves, and those who are willing to pay a fair price not to have to. I'm category 1... |
