Leigh, Jeff and myself met last night and I received some disturbing news. Apparently Rider Radio's debut on KNBR 680 on your AM dial. "The Sports Leader" has been postponed until February 20th (the date that I'll be in Indianapolis at the Powersports Expo) We're working on bringing it back to February 13th.

http://show.teampowersports.com/teampowersports

The good news is that we'll be live in all of the other markets who have chosen Rider Radio and we'll be on schedule to debut as scheduled.

Anyway, the three of us are going to be "in the studio" tomorrow morning February 6th, Superbowl Sunday, at 5 AM getting ready for our first "in the can" program and the 1-877-55-RIDER number will be up and running for calls in the morning. We'll be starting the program at 6 AM tomorrow, however it's going to be a taped program.

Here's your chance, not only to get up early on Superbowl Sunday, but to get in on the action and be one of the very first callers to RiderRadio in the morning.

If you're on the West Coast, it's early. If you're on the East Coast, it's 9 AM until 11 AM so there you go. If you get in (and please keep trying) you will be able to listen to the program while on "hold" on the toll-free number.

Thanks, and I hope to hear from you in the morning on RiderRadio.

Hey Dino and Ferris,
Last year at the Thunderdome, and the ride that followed was GREAT! It would be really cool if we could do a repeat, or something similar. I know Jim, KidCooCoo and myself would be stoked once again. Who knows, maybe a rider or two more may join us.

Jim & Timbo - With the exception of high country roads that aren't plowed, our twisties are open and ready for business...though perhaps a bit sandy in places. I am prepared, if necessary, to personally check out each and every one.

Hello Ferris & Dino,

I see from the above that Timbo is "in". I am certain Kidcoocoo (Larry) is too. So we'll definitely need to plan something.

Last year's plan didn't work out like we had hoped but I think that was due to mechanical issues. The plan on it's own was doable.

I'm looking forward to it.

Court, Check out www.xm411.com it's a treasure trove of XM information.

You can record XM -- Google the phrase "how to record XM" and start digging. If I get caught up I'll try to write you up a how to thingy.

UPDATE:

Court, Audiograbber and line in sampling will set you free. If you have the Roady2, or the other larger portable unit, you can hook it up to your sound card and record away. Pretty slick actually.

Hello all:
I'm new to the board
I am a coastal Carolina (flat land) Bueller
I am in the process of "customizing" my sled
I caught a "sweet deal" on a new in the box super trapp on e-bay.

But I am now in a quandry, I get the impression that the older style (Flat Ended) units may have some serious flaws I have a 2001 X1 I have read thru- the K-Vault but I don't know how to tell if the can is suspect.
Looks like I could stand an extra strap around the aft end, and the "straps don't fit any to tight either", any info would really help

Jim,
If the Supertrapp you have is the flat FRONT unit (the rear where the exhaust tip is is always flat), it WILL fail where the inlet stub pipe goes into the front of the can if you use it stock. I've had that failure, I've seen pictures of several more.

The front end cap is cold stamped with a flange that folds into the pipe. PRIOR to that end cap being welded to the circular can, they weld the stub pipe to that flange at the end of that flange, inside the pipe. This essentially makes it a cantilevered ring, with the fixed end comprised of an already cold worked bend.

I think the failure mode can be eliminated if you put a perimeter weld around the stub where it enters the front of the can, BEFORE using the pipe. That makes the ring supported on both ends, so the bending mode fatigue failure should be eliminated. I can't say for sure it will, but I've seen how they fail and I THINK it will. I just put one on my S1W with that modification because only the old style supertrapp can be used with a race header. Unfortunately, until I yank the rear jug and replace the base gasket, I can't test it.

If confused, I can take a picture.

Old Dog-
Before you install it have a welder run a bead of stainless around the input pipe at the can entrance. The original strap was about as thick as a hose clamp, the stronger one is about 3x as thick.

I had 10,000mi. on mine without a problem until the dealer put the new shock on. It self destructed on the way home. How well you put it on is the secret.

I really like the ST due to being able to play with the output noise (sound). It is really nice with the open endcap (race) as the last disc.

Attention those of you who live and ride in the Northwest...V2Win and I are planning our summer ride and are heading your way...Some highlights along the way are The Chief Joseph Scenic Highway, The Beartooth, Going to the Sun, Mt Ranier and Mt St Helens...

Heading back east we will be going from Portland to The Dalles along the Columbia...I-84 on the south side of the river is a National Scenic Byway but it is an interstate, right?...So what about Washington 14 on the north side of the Columbia?...Which is the better ride in you opinion?...

Thanks,

Bob

Gents, here's a link to some pics showing damage to several of our local riding roads. The damage is typical. In the mountains about 6 miles from my house we got 25" of rain in one storm "event". Yep. 25 inches.

Hey Blake, anyone you know??

Very important information to save you and those you love that drive.

Subject: Wet roads

A 36 year old female had an accident several weeks ago and totaled her car. A resident of Kilgore, Texas, she was traveling between Gladewater &Kilgore. It was raining, though not excessive, when her car suddenly began to hydroplane and literally flew through the air. She was not seriously injured but very stunned at the sudden occurrence!

When she explained to the highway patrolman what had happened he told her something that every driver should know -NEVER DRIVE IN THE RAIN WITH YOUR CRUISE CONTROL ON. She had thought she was being cautious by setting the cruise control and maintaining a safe consistent speed in the rain.

But the highway patrolman told her that if the cruise control is on and your car begins to hydroplane -- when your tires loose contact with the pavement your car will accelerate to a higher rate of speed and you take off like an airplane. She told the patrolman that was exactly what had occurred. We all know you have little or no control over a car when it begins to hydroplane. You are at the mercy of the Good Lord. The highway patrol estimated her car was actually traveling through the air at 10 to 15 miles per hour faster than the speed set on the cruise control.

The patrolman said this warning should be listed, on the drivers seat sun-visor - NEVER USE THE CRUISE CONTROL WHEN THE PAVEMENT IS WET OR ICY, along with the airbag warning.

We tell our teenagers to set the cruise control and drive a safe speed-but we don't tell them to use the cruise control only when the pavement is dry.

The only person the accident victim found, who knew this (besides the patrolman), was a man who had had a similar accident, totaled his car and sustained severe injuries. If you send this to 15 people and only one of them doesn't know about this, then it was all worth it.

You might have saved a life.

the above happened to a family member, she rolled the car three times and ended up upside down in a field, described it pretty much the same way, good info.

Two things I don't understand here.

(1) I would assume that cruise control is sensing rpm somewhere in the driveline to calculate ground speed. If the wheels started to slip, wouldn't the system erroneously read as increased speed and reduce throttle?

(2) From whence does the lift come that causes the car to "take off like an airplane".

Cruise control may well be dangerous in the wet, wouldn't know, never use it. I just can't decipher the explanations given.

I've been told the same thing. The only way I can understand it is if the speed signal for the cruise control comes from the non-driven wheels. When the drive wheels break traction due to hydroplaning, the car slows down and the cruise control senses it and tries to increase the speed, exacerbating the situation.

Just a guess.

I don't understand it much either as I thought cruise control was from the tranny same as speedo, but my mother described the exact same thing, she was OK just a bit shaken and somewhat pi--ed because the thing never turned off

This story has been floating around the net since 2002, and the basic cautions are true.

From: http://www.snopes.com/autos/techno/wetroad.asp

According to the Insurance Corporation of British Columbia's web page of tips about driving on wet roads:

The only way to stop this wheel-spin and maintain control is to immediately reduce power. However, an activated cruise control system will continue to apply power, keeping the wheels spinning. By the time you disengage the cruise control, you may have lost control.

Cheers,

Geof

I seriously doubt that the sensor would be driven other than off the driveline somewhere. worst case I see as likely is a rear wheel drive. Fronts hit water deep enough to hydroplane, resistance to forward motion slows the car slightly, rears maintain contact and sense slowing, system increases fuel delivery to bring ground speed back up to preset. That sure wouldn't help you regain front traction and would be sufficient reason not to use cruise in heavy rains, but it would not cause the vehicle to accelerate beyond the preset speed. Nor would it launch the vehicle into sub-orbital flight.

Somebody here must know how these things actually work???

Howdy, speed notwithstanding there are no airfoils on an auto designed to provide lift. Perhaps it's an issue on the Autobahn with a WOT Porsche but I don't see how a car can "fly into the air" at freeway legal speeds in the U.S. (unless you drive off the road).

I lived (and drove) for many years in Chicago (the home of snow, ice and rain). I've spun cars in all three (mostly intentionally) and have been using cruise control in the rain for 30+ years.

Never had a car "fly" on me. I have hydroplaned more than once though.

How fast was the driver going? My Beech Bonanza (airplane) will not fly below about 60mph, and it's supposed to fly.

Or perhaps the driver is describing hydroplaning as flying?

This has happened to me with my old Doge Dakota. Crossing a bridge and wham I am taking out a light pole on my into the ditch.

I do believe most if not all cruise controls read the output at the transmission. Think about some of those old add-on systems that had you attaching magnets to the drive shaft for the pick-up to read(sense).

Think about this. For those of us who have experiences good and bad with a vehicle spinning or hyrdroplaning. What is your first instinctive reaction? Foot come off the gas and heads for the brake? Your cruise control does not have this reaction. If the front loses traction and the rear still has it. The vehicle is still powering forward. Maybe not in the direction you turn the wheel though. Might give someone idea that they were airborne. So I thinks that Jim hit it on the head. hydroplaning would feel like flying to some.
