I've had this head rebuilt with NHRS goodies and it works great, however, there has always been a slight tapping noise with the B-50 cam, and now with the B-70 it is even louder. Recently had the head examined and the only thing replaced was a suspicious guide that the mechanic at JLK (a great independant shop in San Bruno, CA - with dyno and flow benches) said would probably have given out in another couple thousand miles, otherwise he was impressed with NHRS's head gear and declared every thing good. Still the noise worries me - what could it be? GT - JBOTDS! EZ |

Typical loose tolerances of the valvetrain (cam gears included) generate a lot of noise. There must be some clearance/separation between rocker arm and valve and/or pushrod in order for the valve to close fully. When those surfaces regain contact, it makes a noise. When the valve closes against its seat it also can produce a noise. Stiffer springs and more aggressive cams cause the valve to close more forcefully which would generate more noise for all valvetrain points of contact. It doesn't take much of a tapping action to produce a lot of noise. for instance, take a quarter and bounce-tap it edgewise against your rockerbox cover. Tapping is great. Part of the melodious mechanical cacophony of a Buell valvetrain and primary drive. If you ever hear banging, then start to worry. |

EZ, I hate to say it, but it's going to grenade. It would be in your best interest that you donate it to the SoCal Blast racing effort. We will selflessly put ourselves in harms way to protect you from this incredibly noisy death machine that is out for your blood. No, really!

Sorry, but as a certain XB rider says in his signature - ride it till it seizes!, and as James sugested long ago and far away - ride it like ya stole it - well I have been - so I'm just trying to ease my paranoia - lol - I put over 200 miles on the new cam - letting a Dyna chase me - he's a friend so I didn't ditch him - on the way home I had him pull in front and try to leave me - I smiled as I passed him and we seperated for our different destinations - damn little bike really hauls now! EZ -- take a long screwdriver, put the HANDLE end up to your ear (physical contact) and place the other end agains various places around the engine -- that will let you narrow down the place from which the noise seems to be loudest, which is generally a good indication as to it's source -- not a conclusive diagnosis, but a start (Message edited by ezblast on February 07, 2005) |

With higher lift cams, you may need to have clearanced the rocker covers. Are they anu more spaious than a tube-frame cover? You may be hearing the rocker tapping the top of the rocker box, in which case it may crack and create an oil leak. Check for scuff marks on the cover. (Not a too time-consuming project).
