Well, this is the first time a drop of fluid has hit the ground since I got my bike last summer... I traced the leak to the rear of the spring can on the rear shock. It's a clear, thin fluid that smells like household 3-in-1 oil. From the amount of oil, I'd say it isn't a slow leak, nor a catastrophic failure. I'd say it coincides with the cracking shaft/cut seal theory in the archives. It appears I have the original failure-prone shock. It does not have the repair kit installed. I have not received any recall notice since purchasing the bike and submitting my owner info to Buell. After wearing out the Search menu, I still have some questions that I could find clear answers on... Who rebuilds these shocks if it is a simple seal failure? What can I expect approaching the dealership with this issue if it has indeed failed in concordance with the recall? Is this a standard factory-covered safety recall, or an original-warranty-only service bulletin? |

Make sure there isn't any fluid above/on top - often the carb overflow or breather output etc can exit above the shock and drop out the bottom making. It does sound like a leaking shock tho. You have the original Showa recall shock (the original was the exposed-spring WP) and I believe they only had one version of that one? Ed at tracksideengineering.com can rebuild it easily. He did my RS shock and forks last year. Or, if you're ambitious - put the '99+ swing arm on it and a '01+up Showa. |

The early Showa was never recalled (on the S1's anyway)...they were replaced free if they leaked within a year and sometimes goodwilled there after. Race Tech rebuilds them as well. It's an easy shock to work with...I rebuilt my own and revalved it while I was at it. (Message edited by Rick_a on February 07, 2005) |

Rick, where did you get the rebuild kit and info from? |

I got the info from various sources...I think Battle2Win had a chart in one issue listing the various models/recalls through the years. You can find out about your individual recall status through your dealer as well. The rebuild parts I got from RaceTech. You can find the seals/bushing on their website. |

There are now a bunch of "Recall Shocks" showing up on Ebay -- part # K1400 (K1400.C). This guy has them at the highest price $299 http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=4526594434&ca tegory=35569&sspagename=WDVW Others are listing them for less. DO any of you guys know why these are suddenly appearing? I can use a new one for my 97 S1 ... Any info would be helpful. Thanks. - Bud |
