The AMA will suffer the criticism for one more year then rework the class structure to make sure all the factory teams race each other in one of the 1000 and 600 classes for 2006. If I was them I would adopt a modified World Superbike format. Combine the Superbike and Superstock classes. The rules are already 90% the same. Let them all Qualify. The top 20 qualifiers will race in the Superbike A main twice on Sunday. The rest of the field will run the Superbike B main between the two A races on Sunday. By keeping the A main to only 20 bikes you avoid all the issues that the faster guys were having with lappers, ie, getting in the way of a battle for the lead. For the 600 classes, forbid factory bikes in the Supersport class, force them to race FX. An FX class with 600 IL4's, 750 Twins and 1350cc air cooled twins then becomes more like World Supersport. The AMA should adopt the FIM World Supersport rules for this class to make it cheaper for the factories so they only have to develop one "spec" of 600 race bike for worldwide use. Keep the 600 Supersport class a privateer only class with nearly box stock rules (only let them change Tires, add a PowerCommander/TFI, change gearing & race bodywork, maybe the rear shock). You would need maybe another class to round out the program. |
