Dennis, Tripper posted: October 15 - Octoberfest Ride To Hermann, MO This is a H.O.G. ride, but the BRAG club may want to schedule a ride the same day I plan on getting out there at least for Ralph Waynes. Also will probably be out there for a day sometime prior to or just after Sam and I head to Laguna Seca for the Moto GP races. Been wanting to try Waldo Pizza when I get out over there. Tripper... You know I can't read... I am Independence trailer trash!!! Someone tell me what this says... "October 15 - Octoberfest Ride To Hermann, MO This is a H.O.G. ride, but the BRAG club may want to schedule a ride the same day with a departure 15 minutes earlier than the HOG club. That way you are not bound by their ride rules, riding 5 under the posted, and when you hit the twisties you can rip. They have a VERY full calander with some cool destinations." |

I received the below from the Iowa Farm Mafia... Greetings guys, Some of us in the Waterloo gang are planning an riding trip to Eureka Springs, Arkansas, July 7 - 10. I actually started planning this trip over Christmas vacation and ironically "Roadrunner Magazine" came out with an article on this destination a few weeks later. Since this is in your backyard I wanted to ask for locations we should definitely check out and invite all of you guys to join us. The group from Waterloo will be quite mixed as far as bike brands so the more Buells the better!! Since we're going to be 600 miles from home we are planning a conservative pace (sorry, Sam) since none of us have ever been there. Our plan is to leave here on Thursday after work or early afternoon depending on everyone's schedule and ride down to just south of KC, find a place to stay, then cruise into Eureka, Friday morning. We'll get checked in, then hit the roads for the rest of the day. Saturday we hope to put in a long day which must include a stop in Ralph, Arkansas!! Sunday's plan is to leave early, head north through Missouri, angling east so we can go through The Lake of The Ozarks, then continue north into Iowa and home. Any input on this trip will be greatly appreciated!!! Ralph "Gearhead" Longus XB12R |

Sam, I've got a force pipe question for ya. As you may know I've got a jardine on my XB and was wanting to mate it up with some force headers. The guy told me that the downpipe was 2" which will fit into the midpipe of the jardine, just like stock. I'm wondering if the force downpipe ends up in the same place as stock, or if you know...Thanks. |

Sam... It was terrible.. oh so terrible... Being a government employee and all... The UPS man delivered 3 boxes to me today. They contained 5, yes, countem... five Heckler & Hock .40 caliber submachineguns! I HAD to spend the afternoon test firing, and zero of sights before I begin to train with the weapons. It was miserable having to fire 200+ rounds through these .40 caliber version of the HK MP5. With the little selector moved to the multiple bang per trigger press mode. It was terrible. ...and you know what is worse... I have four more to do Monday afternoon. I'd like to thank all you tax payers for supplying me with the ammunition to blast through these machineguns... as I get paid to do this duty. Oh... what a terrible day at work... woe is me, oh woe is me!!! Gee... should I go to work Monday, knowing I have such terrible duty a head of me???? Update on my XB, I put a set of Tag motocross bars on her today fellaz, they turned out cool. I fired her up an road tested it about 5 miles and the preliminary test proved that the upgrade allows the XB9S to corner much better. The bars are a bit lower than stock and have a different bend that is more straight than bended down and toward the rider, it also adds a look that not many have on their XB's. |

Hans... 90 days and counting. It has taken almost 20 years for the neat toys to arrive. It's kinda like being kicked in the balls every day... and then some of those days some one hands you an ice cream cone! The occasional ice cream cone is nice... but what one has to go through to get one sort of cancels out the fun of it all! Week before last, I got 3 new semi-auto M4 carbines I had to rush to get into service. Busting my azz to get them set up, took the fun out of firing a few hundred rounds of tax payer supplied ammo. After the fun of these subguns... I will have to fight to keep one available for training... so after the initial fun... I will give them out to guys who won't remember how to use them between qualifications... and I won't have a subgun to "play with" or train with while the clueless ones have one in the trunk of their car. So I can reteach them every 6 months to only see one while they go through a qualification courses, and won't get a chance to shoot one... that is until at least one has trouble hitting center mass and complains the sights are off... so I can fire 5 founds in the gun to see the group as one ragged hole in the center of the target to only say "It ain't the gun... it is you!" So... what ever fun I want, I better get this week. Trust me... I will be at the office Sunday to dump a few rounds down range... and take my time and burn as much ammo as I can Monday. I have 27 thousand rounds of .40 cal... and I only need about 6 thousand to finish the year... so I ain't gonna conserve ammo as I test fire and zero the sights!!! The only reason I stopped at 200+ rounds today was because my hands were getting tired loading magazines... and I was not gonna stay past 5:00 pm. I had 15 people shoot qualification courses through 4 AR-15 rifles and 4 short barrel Remington 870 shotguns. I barely got to shoot other than setting up the new rifles. Guess who spent 3 hours yesterday and 2.5 hours today cleaning guns... I will give you a hint... it was not anyone that was not a firearms instructor... and there is only one firearms instructor in this office... me! I hate cleaning guns... particularly when I don't get to shoot much to get them dirty. I have tried the shooters clean the guns routine... they either never cleaned them, or did a half azz job. Keep in mind this may be the gun that keeps someone from killing them... but they do not care enough to keep it clean enough to be sure it functions. I can't "not care" because I could not live with myself if the guns were left dirty, and one malfunctioned and someone got hurt or killed... even if it were because they were too lazy to clean the things. So... I clean them so I can issue them with a clear mind... that there is nothing to factor in that falls back on me... if something happens to someone. I try my best to motivate to get these people to care about being skilled with the weapons and maintain the weapons so that they will survive an armed encounter... to only find too many of who I deal with forget how to correctly operate and load a Remington 870, a very simple weapon... in the 6 months since the last time we went to the range. A gun they have used for 10 to 15 years!!! To some degree, most of the people in my office are not totally or properly competent with the rifles and/or shotguns... and don't seem to care that they stumble through qualification! Yet they are the ones to jump up and down wanting the coolest weapon in our inventory when they go out... only to ask me how to do something related to the weapon, because they forgot since the last qualification! Let me give you an example... I have a Viet Nam Vet...who was with the Border Patrol for a few years before being a Deputy U.S. Marshal for 21+ years. He still does not know how to properly use an AR-15, a type of rifle he has been using for at least 30 years... He had an accidental discharge on the range trying to cheat during qualification. To try and get an advantage during a stage where you have 2 seconds to move the selector from safe to fire and fire one shot center mass at 15 yards... keep in mind you already have the rifle at the ready and are almost aimed in at that point. He tries to cut time by pressing the trigger and when target faces, he moves the safety to the fire position. Keep in mind the cardinal rule is to keep the finger off the trigger until it is time to fire. Well he up and forgets to engage the safety... so when he "pre-presses the trigger" the gun fires! So if he would have been covering a suspect... he would have shot someone who might not have needed shooting. Luck was it was training... but if he is stupid enough to think it is proper technique to press the trigger with the safety on while covering a suspect... and "forgets" the safety is not on... his career is over! Did he get it when I called him on getting caught? No... he just laughs and says "oops"! Or the left handed shooter who kept bumping the safety on a Remington 870 shotgun thus engaging the safety unintentionally, disabling the weapon... complaining the weapon was malfunctioning. It could not be her... it had to be the shotgun, which I exchanged with another shooter who had zero malfunctions... and she did the same on a second shotgun... and blamed it on the gun. Or the shooter last week who kept having malfunctions with her Glock... one of the most reliable handguns on this planet... because she decided to change how she did her grip... and started shooting with a high thumb... not realizing she was applying pressure to the slide, causing the malfunction by hindering the movement of the slide. Then when I saw what she was doing and told her... she wanted to argue... because it did not happen every time so it could not be her fault... until I pointed out that was because she was gripping her pistol inconsistently... and that was not only why her Glock was malfunctioning, but it was also causing her to shoot poorly. This is the same person who had shot a little plastic cone I use to mark distance from the target to set firing line distances from the target... the cone is 9 feet from the target and 3 feet to the left of the target, and she hit it with a shotgun blast from 21 feet and misses the target!!! The bad out weights the good of a few new toys. Forgive me for going on a rant... but when learning a skill may mean you survive an armed encounter, and too many people don't care enough to learn the weapons... I just don't get it!!! I am SOOOOOOO glad I have bullet proof glass between me and these people in my indoor range when I conduct qualification. However, when we do rifle and shotgun outside... I am hanging out there hoping that when the accidental discharge happens... it is not towards me. (We have had one live round fired in our office since I have been here! ...and we have safe handling areas... and it seems I am the only one who uses then!) I am armed during this training... and if anyone swings a muzzle towards me... they will be facing a Glock and strong verbal commands to put the weapon down or to turn down range!!! I have not had to do this yet... but trust me... I watch them like a hawk... because most just don't get it that you never swing a muzzle towards someone even if the gun is "unloaded". I have had coworkers point muzzles at me of unloaded guns a number of times... and the only reason I did not take aggressive action, was because I knew the gun was unloaded, because I just handed it to them! When I warned them about "muzzle discipline", their comment was that the gun was unloaded... and did not get it when I told them it did not matter, you NEVER have a muzzle towards anything you are not willing to see destroyed! I'll stop now and go back to my vanilla vodka. We now return to normal programming!!! |

Dennis, So you clean guns huh? How about I bring you a few over next time I visit and pay you $2 a gun. Then you might actually be able to eat inside instead of dumpster diving! Are you capable of any gunsmithing??? I think I found a job for you in your retirements years? Or a least an excuse for you and Sam to take a weekend road trip next winter. Keith |

Digger... I have done Remington 870s so many times... I can clean one of those in less than 15 minutes, that includes detail stripping and reassembly of the weapon. The AR-15/M-16 family of weapons is more of a pain. I love the weapon platform, but I question why Eugene Stoner (the designer) had to have expelled gasses blown directly into the bolt and receiver. With the small angular areas... it is time consuming to clean. The carbon basically that bakes on the bolt, is difficult to remove. The Heckler & Koch MP-5 has a deeply recessed chamber that is difficult to access and it takes a special tool to clean. The UMP-40 seems to be less problematic by design, and should not be as bad to clean. I have not had the time to tear one down yet. You should realize this... my duty weapon is spotlessly clean. The pistol I train with and used to shoot competitively only gets cleaned under one of two circumstances. It begins to malfunction due to being too dirty. I have never been able to get a Glock that dirty... they are like the Energizer Bunny... they just keep going and going!!! The second incident is that the weapon is so dirty it is messy just to handle... and that is when I typically clean my training pistol. I have been through a few armorer schools. Glock, S&W pistol, SIG Sauer, Remington 870, I used to do trigger jobs the correct way on S&W revolvers. I have repaired AR-15/M-16 platform and Heckler & Koch roller lock family. I could work my way into most designs... there are very few that are dramatically different than what I have listed. However, to truly do gunsmithing you need to be a machinist. If you don't have and can't use a lathe well, you are limited to changing parts and hand fitting. Knowing how to silver solder and having the ability to refinish is a biggie too. The cost to set up a shop correctly is pretty high!!! The short answer... at $2.00 a gun... I will continue to dumpster dive!!! Thank you

Dennis I feel your pain, in the gun cleaning area. Although I haven't spent 20 years doing it, I did spend a total of 8 years in the military and yes we cleaned or 16's and M4's on a regular basis. I don't envy you in that fashion. I feel your pain brother I really don't know how someone works for more than 3 years for the government, to much red tape!!!!! You are a super trooper in my book. |

Hans... It is in excess of 30 years. Four years Army, eight years police department, 20 years at this job. AND... I don't know how I did it. My project now is building a semi M-4 lower receiver. I was too lazy to put a M-4 stock on my full stock Stoner M-4. So I took a long-cut (the opposite of a short-cut) and am building up an Armalite/Eagle Arms lower, so I can use the full stock or the M-4 stock on my tricked out Stoner M-4 upper. The Stoner M-4 upper has, military Aimpoint sight with quick detach mount, Swan sight rail base with folding rear sight, Knight's RAS rail system, surefire and streamlight flashlights on the rail system, vertical grip on the rail system, National Match type chrome bolt and carrier, and Chalker sling system. The Stoner lower is standard, which means full stock and National Match trigger. At some point I will add a custom M-4 upper to the Armalite/Eagle Arms lower, and end up with a rifle. |

Sounds awesome Dennis, I was looking into buying the M4 bushmaster at Cabella's about 4 months ago, but I figured I'd never get to shoot it here. I would have to wait till I went home to visit in Montana, where you can step out your back door and test fire your weapons. What is the cost difference between building the M4 as you are or buying a bushmaster? |

Tripper... I can't get a thing past you!!! Hans... From everything I have read you might get a better rifle for about the same price by getting a Olympic Arms instead of the Bushmaster. Rock River Arms makes a good rifle too, a bit more than an Olympic. Olympic Arms may be more bang for the buck (pun intended). I traded for an Olympic Arms CAR-15 a coulpa years ago for my son. In spite of appearing loose, it shoots a very tight group. I have two Stoners, bought them before the divorce and the health problems made money an issue. Stoners are known for almost a hand fitted gun, tight tolerances, accurate shooters, GREAT triggers, right out of the box. My Hbar was so tight at first that it would jam from a little fouling. That went away as I shot the thing in, a few hundred rounds. Closer to a match grade rifle that a combat weapon. I would not dream of using one if I were in Iraq. I would be concerned the dust and sand would cause problems. Part of the reason for building the rifle is to get a gun built to combat tolerances. I have about $3500.00 in each of the Stoners. One M-4 the other an Hbar. Which makes them great rifles, but if I sold them I'd NEVER get my money out of them. Another reason to keep them. It would kill me to take a big loss on the rifles, so I will most likely never consider selling them, no matter how bad things could get. The advantage of building is getting the exact rifle I want. I want a quality shooter, that will only cost me a little more than the Stoners before I tricked them out. The receiver was $130.00, the parts for the lower to include a National match trigger was $180, $90.00 for the stock, which has 6 length adjustments instead of the typical four, then $35.00 for a pistol grip that has storage for batteries. The upper complete custom configured with 16 inch M-4 type chrome lined barrel, flat top reveiver complete, folding front sight will be about $500.00. That will get me to a shooting gun. Later I will add an EOTech dot sight, folding rear sight, and a rail system handguard. That will add about another $800.00. The base price for the Stoners was about $1600.00. Buying the parts retail and assembly of your weapon, for a bone stock rifle, will be about the same as an off the shelf Olympic Arms or a Bushmaster. A little less than a Rock River Arms bone stock. When you get ready to buy, go to Denny's Gunshop in North Kansas City. He has a good selection, and fair prices Most ARs do not come with a chrome lined barrel. It is said that with chrome lining, you give up a little accuracy, in return for a longer barrel life and no worry about rust in the barrel if you are out in bad weather. I consider Chrome lining a must. This adds about $40.00 to a barrel. Anyway... I am boring or ticking off the others, since this has nothing to do with bikes. |

Dennis, This is very interesting stuff, I have really enjoyed your comments as of late. My question is where do you go to shot your guns outside of your range at work. As my brother said we would like to get some of these but there is no where to shot them that we know of, and what are the local laws here in the city for transporting them in city limits? |
