Ok....I really screwed up!! I was formatting my C: drive to reinstall windows last night...I wasn't paying attention(stupid TV!!) and accidentally formatted the D: drive instead!! That one was storage....with ALL of my pictures, music, and text info...only about 25 gigs worth!! I have found some unformat utilities, and recovered some of the files....but I can't afford to pay for them...so I am stuck with the demos...which will only restore files smaller than 64k, which limits me drastically. Anyone know of a program I can use to restore everything?? Oh....and it needs to be free  | ||

Well I have good news....and bad. I found backups of all my pics from october, so I didn't lose everything. I tried both of those programs...to no avail. I "only" lost about 20 pictures, but about 2000 songs, and several programs...but I think I can get most of that stuff again. The pics are the irreplaceable thing. Thanks for trying guys! | ||

Archiving tip: burn your new pictures to a CD as soon as you download them onto your computer. CDs are incredibly cheap and make a relatively permanent backup. | ||

... And once every month or two, grab the latest backup CD's and take them to your work / inlaws house / brothers house / whatever. Have an offsite backup. DVD Burners are now under $100 for desktops, and store 4.7 gigs (a CD is .7 gigs). Blank disks are as cheap or cheaper then CDR's in terms of $ per byte. | ||

That one's an "OEM" so it comes with nothing, but if you're replacing an existing CD drive it's simple. If you're adding a drive you'll need to make sure you have a spare data connector (the existing CDs cable *should* work) and you'll need to make sure the two CD drives are "jumpered" correctly. If you decide to try adding it let me know I'll dig up an online graphical how-to. Or I can install it for you when I'm there in March And remember you'll need software if the basic XP functions (copy files to CD) aren't enough. | ||

Yeah, but if all you're wanting to do is make an instant copy of the last set of pics off your camera, a DVD is overkill. A CD-RW would be a good option for people who don't take a lot of pics at once. For permanent archives of your finished work, on the other hand, DVDs are perfect...particularly if you turn your work into nice audio-accompanied slideshows with DVD-ROM copies of the originals and finished pics on the same DVD. | ||

I wasn't recommending CDs for backing up a hard drive, but for making instant backups of irreplaceable pictures before you start fiddling with them. Even with a 6 MP camera you can fit a couple days' worth of fairly active shooting on a single CD (when using a DVD would be overkill). Given the cost (cheap!) of drives now, DVDs are most definitely better for more complete backup purposes. Get the DVD burner and you can have the best of both worlds. | ||

Another computer glitch. I can get on every website I choose and now all of a sudden I can't hook up to 1 in particular. www.wera.com I get a page saying that it's either dns error or the page is not available. I've e-mailed several folks and they say they are no having a problem accessing that site?? Help | ||

Keep trying, sometimes if DNS entries get snarled up (either globally by the owner messing it up, or locally by your ISP copy of the information getting corrupted) stuff like this can happen. In the meantime, if it's an emergency, send me a personal message and I can give you a short term workaround. | ||

What's it mean when I try and fire up the PC in the garage, and after a couple of seconds it just goes BEEP, BEEP, BEEP,BEEP,BEEP,BEEP,BEEP,BEEP,BEEP,BEEP....... from somewhere inside? Too close to the sandblasting cabinet perhaps?  | ||

Check the system or motherboard manual for "BIOS codes and troubleshooting" there should be a list of beep codes that will tell you exactly what is wrong. in my experience beeps are most commonly for either no (or bad) memory chips installed or no video card. | ||

Try lifting up the gas tank cap lock to relieve pressure, might be a blocked vent line. Next try to bypass the sidestand switch and see if that helps. Next put your ear very close and see if you can hear the drive start up, or watch the front and see if any of the drive lights light up when you first turn it on. Are you using approved synthetic lubrication in it? It might be too cold in the garage for it to fire up. I know in my garage the temps have ranged from -7°F to 25°F in the last week alone, and my computer would not like working in that environment. Shoot, tried to fire up my snowblower last night and even that didn't run in those temps (had to get the shovel out). In any case, hope you find some help or solace or humor in some part of this posting.  In all seriousness though, ensure your drive is starting up. Then wait for Reep's or Josh's reply to continue. It could actually be too close to the sandblasting cabinet, and if MikeJ had gone just a little further, I would bet he would have got it. A spun bearing Seriously. Unless it has vibrated a lot and a memory card, daughter card, or cpu has shook loose, I bet the cooling fan on the CPU has stopped working (enough), and the overheated CPU after valiently soldiering along for as long as it could, has finally melted. Pull the cover, blow out all the garbage in there, remove and reinstall the memory cards, the daughter cards (like video and maybe modem), and the CPU (if it is removable, not all are) and put them back in snugly. Also see if the CPU fan and the power supply fans spin up without making scary bearing noises. The power supply will also have a fan, check that for the same thing, and the case and video card may have fans to check as well. Could be a dead video card, I have seen it, but more often then not it is a blown motherboard or CPU (and often both, they like to take each other out when they go). | ||

OK, thanks. I'll give it a shot. It was working perfectly in the evening. Shut it down normally, and then the next day it just started this crap. If not I'll toss it out and buy another Mac. This little iMac has run like a train since day one and never given me the slightest bit of trouble. Me likeeee. Mikej, and to think I was going to bolt the turbo onto it! | ||
