Just shy of 2000 miles on my XB12S that I recently got and the rear is about shot. My bike's a "working" bike as I try to commute on it as much as possible. Dang, I can't put high dollar rubber on every 2k. I'm considering a Dunlop D220 for the rear. Not an ideal setup but what's a commuter supposed to do? | ||

I have a D220 on my bike and it has lasted about 8000 miles so far...I figure there is at least 1000 or maybe 2000 more miles on it left. If you are not pushing the turns too hard it should be a good tire. Another would be the Michelin Pilots.... | ||

I used up my stock rear tire in 2100 miles. Same thing.....just commuting and no burnouts. I replaced the OE tires with Michelin Pilot Powers. A 1000 miles on them now and the rear is still looking real good. | ||

I get about 3500 out of a rear MEtzeler M1 and about 7K out of a front. Discount motorcyle tires has them for about $200 a pair. | ||

I have 4k on my stock tires and I am going to try the continental venoms they are a sport touring tire and should last around 10k and they look good. Has anyone heard anything about these tires? | ||

'A 1000 miles on them now and the rear is still looking real good.' I have a little more on my set of pilot power and I've found they are hardly worn. They don't tear up as easily as the D207 or D208. I got 2200 and 3300k's out of them respectively... No burn outs, just hard cornering and the occasional mono. 2000k's on the power and they look pretty new still. I think they might actually last 5000k's... Which would be nice... $500AUD a set, but they are the single best tyre I've ever used, and I am usually lucky to get 5000k's from a pair of tyres... I like them a lot... | ||

Do NOT go with the D220, it is the worst I have tried. The MeZ6 would be a great commuter tire, I think the Pirelli Scorpion would be even better, but won't be sure until I manage to wear mine out (2k miles so far and they look great). Both will loose a little ultimate grip over a pure sport tire like the D208 that came with the bike, but still allow for very aggressive riding, and will last a lot longer. The D220 was a replacement for the D205, and (IMHO) inferior in every way, in particular while waiting for it to warm up, when it was sliding all over the place. | ||

The D205 was a pretty good tire as well, come to think of it. It was supposed to be discontinued for the D220 replacement, but I think I keep seeing it for sale. The Dunlops kinda fall into corners, which can feel "quicker", the Metzlers are progressive and linear, which feels more confident. My guess is that the scorpions (my current favorite) are closer to the Metzlers with a nice linear round profile, and (IMHO) look very cool on the back of the bike. | ||

My 9SX came with the Pirelli Scorpion stock on it. I must say that with 2500 miles on them the read barely looks worn. Can't tell you how they perform in the corners though due to Florida having only 11 turns in 318 miles. | ||

Reep, how hard do you push the Scorps?? I have a D208 on the rear now and the original 207 on the front. I've been thinking about the Scorps but wonder how they really do in the twisties. I commute more than anything so it isn't immensely important but would like to find a good compromise that leans a little more towards the grip side vs. longevity. one thing i should add, is that the metzeler seems to run a bit smaller than the dunlop, so you MAY want to try a 190 width. i say MAY, because i have been running the 180 myself, and they work real well. bike stays leaned over easier, and the brakes dont stand the bike up with the metzelers as much as is very noticable with the oem dunlops. ( am i making any sense?) | ||

The bike is new, and it has pretty much been winter since I got it, so I have not really pushed it. I was doing braking excercises in a parking lot to try and build some muscle memory around a particular problem that keeps kicking my •••... so I was doing panic stops from about 50 mph down to about 10 mph, then trying to transition immediately into a hard evasive turn. Interestingly, on the Cyclone, this was pretty much not worth the trouble. By the time the suspension was settled down enough to actually do anything useful, I might as well have just stopped. On the CityX with the Scorpions, it was very much useful. I could go from slight stoppie (back tire about 4 inches in the air) to hard cranked turn very quickly. My mind didn't like it, but the XB was cool with it. Doing this excercise would have the front tire leaving light black marks on the pavement, but it was not skidding, and never felt anything other then ROCK solid. The tire REALLY felt planted. I then did some battletrax type stuff on the same parking lot just for fun, and was scraping the pegs (without cheating by leaning the wrong way), and no signs of anything getting loose. So while I don't know for sure, I can say with confidence they are far better then D220's, probably better then the MeZ6, and probably better then the D205. FWIW ;0 (For What Its Worth). I can't WAIT to get the XB into a Battletrax! Now I can probably be one of the slow fast guys, instead of one of the fast slow guys  (Message edited by reepicheep on January 15, 2005) | ||

I use Avon Azaro-ST 45 (Front) & 46 (Rear) and had about 9,500 on the rear before I had to change it. Reasonably priced also. | ||

Thanks guys. I'm thinking one of the Dunlops until my front is ready to change and then switch to the Diablo's to try something different. I want to keep the front and rear tire geometry similar. Loving the bike so far. | ||

i have continental road attack's on mine front and rear the front is only scrubbed in real well and the rear still has some of the factory lettering on the tread ohhh by the way thats 2500 miles on em and yes i am out playing in the corners and such as much as possible | ||

sorry btw the road attacks have a more round but narrower profile than the dunlops and do turn in alot faster than the stock 207's and hold the lean angle beter...imo... wet traction is ok i guess but still as good if not beter than the stock rock's my only complaint that i have about the road attack's is that they take longer to come up to temp but when they do i feel they do grip beter than the 207's | ||

Anyone gone through a set of Pilot Powers yet? I'm told they're supposed to be incredible, but I'd like to hear about mileage. I've been mostly happy with my Sportec M1s. They stick well enough to put the stock R pegs down on the street and I've seen as much as 5k out of the rear before hitting the wear bars. The problem is that I commute with my bike, so I'm changing tires at least twice a year. My current set of M1s have 3500 miles on them now and the wear bar is close, maybe another 1k miles left. I'd like more mileage, but I'm not willing to give up any traction. On the other hand, if I could gain traction without giving up any mileage I'd be willing to go for that too. I was thinking of trying the Roadtec Z6s next, but I didn't know if a "sport-touring" tire would be suitable for the track. Any thoughts? Mike Luddy, Jr. '04 XB12R | ||

I'm gonna need to change mine out soon. The wear bar is starting to show on mine as well. I'm supposed to be leaving soon for Iraq so I guess I'll just let it be until I get back. Think I'm gonna try the Scorpions. I liked the way they felt on the City X when I rode it at the Battletrax in Yuma. |
