Got this from a different Board that was talking about people waving back. Funny stuff. Top Ten Reasons Why Harley Riders Don't Wave Back 10. - Afraid it will invalidate warranty. 9. - Leather and studs make it too hard to raise arm. 8. - Refuses to wave to anyone whose bike is already paid for. 7. - Afraid to let go of the handlebars because they might vibrate off. 6. - Rushing wind would blow scabs off the new tattoos. 5. - Angry because just took out second mortgage to pay luxury tax on new Harley. 4. - Just discovered the fine print in owner's manual and realized H-D is partially owned by those rice-burner manufacturers. 3. - Can't tell if other riders are waving or just reaching to cover their ears like everyone else. 2. - Remembers the last time a Harley rider waved back, he impaled his hand on spiked helmet. 1. - They're jealous that after spending $20,000, they still don't own a Gold Wing. So what is the accepted "wave" in various parts of the country. Here in MT we do a casual "gimme-five" style w/ the left hand held palm forward below the handlebars. Is this the universal method? Rob | ||

Down here, I see a lot of left hands out, below the bar, palms down as though they were petting a dog or warming up over a fire. I guess it's aerodynamic or something. rt | ||

i always like my method...grab the clutch and some gas bring it up on one wheel, jump up to the gas tank, spread legs, and ride by smiling. it usually gets a thumbs up  brian | ||

the cruiser boyz have taken to pointing at the ground somewhere in the area of just forward of their left footses in the greater Chicago/Milwaukee megolopigis -- not sure what it means,although it could be as simple as conserving energy, or conforming with some unknown to me cool tamplate -- or, they are ssolding me for picking my feet up before the obligitory two city blocks have elapsed since the last complete stop me, I just wave my hand around a bit, or render a vaguely milatary-like salute with my left hand if the scoot is particularly tasty waving at actual scooter pilots has resulted in a number of very frightened looking scooter pilots -- this says asomething, I am certain, but don't know what I also greet drivers of very cool cars -- they most alwyas wave back | ||

Bomber...Me thinks the hand to the ground wave is just the natural movement of a numb arm in the wind. Is completed with a circular motion back to the handlebars. Either that or they are reaching for the gun stashed in their left boot. LOL Heck, I'm a 60's kinda guy. I just flash the "Peace Sign." No wave back and it is real quick'n'easy to convert to the "Single Digit Salute."  | ||

I have seen the the "pat the dog" wave here a lot, generally just hang a hand off the left is acceptable. I like to wave vigorously at scooter riders, just to see if they respond. Most are pretty much oblivious, especially when they're in the racer crouch scooter riders get into. | ||

Around here, scooter riders ignore you if you're on a bike. I figure it's the hipster crowd, thinking they're better than those uneducated smelly biker hooligans. I wave anyway, usually. lol... My normal wave is a sort of horizontal peace sign, below and out a bit from the grip. Also fun to do that to squids in the hills while leaned over pretty far... lol... | ||

I'm with Outrider and Newblaster. I generally drop the left hand off in a somewhat inverted peace sign. If they don't wave back I convert it to a single. I figure if anyone takes issue with that, I'm almost always headed out the spars and if they can keep up until the bar at the end (13 miles, at least a hundred turns) we're probably already friends and I owe them a brew anyway. I remember one time I was coming around a right hand sweeper. I saw about 6-8 FLH type bikes coming my way. The first one waved so I dropped my outside hand off the bars and held it out like I was going to high five all of them. EVERY single on of them immediately crammed their brakes and began an evasive maneuver (which netted them about 2" of lateral movement by the time I went by). One more thing... I've noticed I'm about 80% more likely to get pulled over if I wave at a cop on a bike... What's up with that? | ||

Never been pulled over by a bike cop, esp for waving, and I always wave to the bike cops, they seldom return it though... | ||

I was coming back to the office from my lunch break at the dentist today... As I turned off the main road there was a Motorcycle Cop going the opposite direction so I gave him a wave, made my turn and continued on into my parking lot. After I shut my bike down I heard another bike running, so I turned around and the bike cop was behind me. He jumped off his bike and jacked me up felony style. After he got me cuffed and detained he said I was evading another cop from a few miles back and that I seemed like I was trying to get away from him too! It was all news to me. Once the other cop showed up he made me sweat out the treat of going to jail for reckless but I ended up getting out with just a improper lane change violation and the entire company laughing at me for being cuffed in the parking lot. My question is if I was trying to ditch the other cop why the hell would I give a leisurely wave to the bike cop? | ||

Around these parts in Ohio me(xb12r) and my buddy(v-rod)ride around town sometimes just to see who will wave and who wont.So far mostly, the only ones that dont wave back are the 14 year old Mo-pedders.But it is hilarious just to wave at them.I think they are a bit disgruntled because they probably dream of riding the machines we are.Looks like their gonna have to wait..I did | ||

Road rage is an ugly thing. I wave at just about every bike I pass. If they don't wave back, so what? In today's world there are a lot of whackos, one who may take offense to the middle finger salute and turn around and shoot someone. It happens in cages a lot. The "he can't catch me or brotherhood" arguments don't work here. my 2 cents worth | ||

I do not give an initial wave to anybody riding without a helmet, mainly because I think they are idiots. I will wave if they wave first however. |
