I've been couped up for several days here because of the weather!! Sorry, it's given my mind too much time to wander!! There are so many of these bikes for sell, CHEAP, what about a racing series?? There are several of you guys out there that can design up some rear sets, then add some clip-ons, keep the bikes stock except for air cleaners and exhaust, then we can find out who the knee draggers really are!! Hey, I'm not calling anyone out but it could be a real hoot!! Now let's hope for some nice weather so I can get out of the house and away from this blasted machine!! |

I'd hit it, i just need some rear sets. $500 is a lot for rear sets. |

That sounds WAY fun! That is probably the best idea I have heard in a long time. I think even I can afford a Blast and a Vance and Hines Exhaust. |

Check out the rearsets on the S1 Blast - shift side and something simular to this which design wise is very simular to their competition - the true heart of their patents laying in the shift mech. - neither of which is represented here - With some basic measurements made, and some basic tools, and about 100 bucks in material could get you a set just like that - or close enough - lol Got Thump? GREAT IDEA:-) I had a Blast for a while, it handled very nicely, and could provide some very good low cost racing. It might also stimulate The Motor Company to produce a Sport model Blast which could improve the sales of the Blast line, and which would be easier to convert for racing. I am thinking of something like a Blast XR: race kit, cams, clip ons, rear sets, maybe a handlebar fairing like the Firebolts. I used to race 500cc singles back in the day, (Norton Manx, Velocette Venon, etc.) and they were a pants full of fun, and pretty easy to maintain and tune. Hmmmmmm... Damn, great minds.. sort of.. I was joking with the wife the other day that I should look into starting.. (ready for it.. Drum roll) ACERA - Air Cooled Engine Racing Association.. (or something some such) With true STOCK classes for some fun club type racing.. Stock Blast, XB's, Tubers etc. with classes to include the 'modified' and even the Sportster.. Might even find someone crazy enough to help back the effort.. hehehehehehe.. Bet we could field several 'teams' from this board alone.. Just blathering for now, but it's a germ of a great idea.. Well, what really got me thinking about this is a friend of mine is going to Moto-Cross a 50cc bike next weekend. This has become HUGE around here and of course there is very little STOCK on his bike but it just got me thinking. (Dangerous) We've all seen the whole pocket bike thing explode so why not the Blast? It may have to start out as a track day thing but who knows, maybe we'll create a monster!! |

Ralph, I shink that it's a great idea. Maybe a dealership should take all it's rider training bikes to a track and do a Blast track day... er um "advanced rider course". Competely stock bikes, dealer provided, nominal entry fee. A couple of practice laps, some heat races and a final race. You woudn't want a big track. Maybe a local go-cart track of a track like the Streets of Willow or Grange. http://www.grangeracetrack.com/main.htm Maybe it could progress to a national challenge series with a final event in say... Las Vegas? Similar to a Battletrax event. DaveS, and the Glendale group are you listening??? Or am I dreaming? James |

AHRMA and F-USA/CCS have some classes that suitably modded Blasts could do well in. |

Rick a, I cannot find a class in Formula USA or CCS for the Blast. They allow single cylinder bikes in a few classes but they are also allowed to have unlimited displacement. I'm not interested in throwing those kind of $$$ at it. I'm not familiar with the AHRMA rulebook. |

I coulda sworn they did... AHRMA rules are as follows: 10.10 SOUND OF SINGLES® 10.10.1 Machine eligibility: All competition classes are intended for single-cylinder motorcycles only. All classes may be run together and scored separately as determined by the number of entries and track conditions. Classes include (see rule 10.11 for additional mechanical requirements): a) Super Mono™ 2: Four-stroke motorcycles with more than two valves up to 510cc and two-valve four-strokes to 610cc. b) Super Mono™: Unlimited displacement four-strokes. c) Two-Stroke Singles: Two-strokes up to 550cc. d) Production Singles. Street or off-road single-cylinder four-strokes that are or were available to the general public in the U.S. including supermoto-type machines. The Ducati Supermono is excluded from this class. All AHRMA Supersport rules (10.11.1) shall apply to Production Singles with the following exceptions: 1) Bodywork. For motorcycles produced without fairings, fairings may not be added. A fluid-retention belly pan is required (see 9.3f). 2) Suspension. Rear suspension "dogbone" links may be replaced. 3) Tires. DOT-approved tires with an S or higher speed rating may be used. Non-DOT-approved rain tires may be used. Slicks or cut slicks are allowed. No off-road or knobby tires allowed. 4) Wheels. Wheels may be replaced. Rims may be no smaller than 16" in diameter. Wheel design, rim size, and wheel material may be changed. No carbon fiber or composite wheels allowed. Rim width should comply with the tire manufacturer's recommendations. 5) Brakes. Brake rotors may be replaced but can be no larger than 320mm in diameter. 10.10.2 Bumping: A machine may “bump up” into any class in which it is eligible under the class guidelines. 10.10.3 Depending upon size of grids, entries may be run together and scored separately at AHRMA’s option. |

Dunno what other Clubs want but I think Willow Springs gets $2500 to sponsor a class. It would have to be run concurrently with one other singles class to avoid extending the day another race longer. A whole series would be pricey run through one of the organizations such as CCS, AFM, WERA - but never hurts to ask. If it were run embedded within one of the other singles classes, I bet it would be cost-effective BUT would eliminate the possibility of a racer competing in multiple classes on the same bike. |

Just checked, CCS (F-USA) also wants $1000 to be a contingency sponsor. http://www.formulausa.com/contingency/04appformsfusaccs.pdf (Message edited by slaughter on January 05, 2005) |

C'mon now guys, you're dreaming if you think a Blast will run with a CF450R or even an old 501 Maico or air cooled TT500. The only way would be a spec class. Blast only. Now that would be fun. I like the idea of the Riders edge bikes and a rent-a-racer. If a dealer showed up with 15 identical bikes, mostly stock, previously beat up, and charged say $150 for a bike and a special 4 lap sprint race at the end of saturday. That could make for alot of fun and laughs on saturday night. I'd bet some real rocket guys would do it for a hoot and braging rights. Have a lottery for who gets what bike and if the class fills up then let privately owned Blasts in, Very close spec's of course. Most of you missed the Lightning series, but it was easy to build a reasonably compettitive bike and FUN FUN FUN. It really showed ya how fast the fast guys really are! Since then I've been a fan of spec racing. Blasts are a unique bird that need a sport created just for them but I'm afraid Battletrax is as close as it will get to reality. |

What fun this summer going to the gocart tracks. $6.00 for 10 or 15 minutes. The next logical progression is motorcycle tracks. I rode all over Michigan riding the different tracks. You run what was issued to you. No classes you just drove the tracks cart. There are some really sophisticated tracks around. Anyone independently wealthy out there? |

Spec class would be the ONLY way. The path of least resistance would be to have it run concurrently with an existing class but scored separately. Unfortunately, most club racers wouldn't be as thrilled with that because they'd like to run two or 3 classes with the same bike and I don't think any club would give a racer points in 2 classes with only 1 race. |

I agree that the Blast class would have to be a spec class. Grange is available for rent for $1500/day on weekends, $1200/day if you have two events in the year, and $1000/day if four or more events a year. Maybe we should get a group together to go Blast racing. As neat as it sounds to sponsor a class at Willow, I know that the Blast would drown. We'd have one less lap in our race, because almost every other class that we'd be run with would lap us. I remember watching the guy on the Blst from Las Vegas being lapped by the Honda Ascotts by the end of every 500 singles race. It would be really neat to get 5 or 10 Blastards out to Grange to do a race day. James |

I'm missing the problem with a concurrent Blast class. Concurrent with some other similarly powered class - be it singles or otherwise. Granted, I don't really know how the AMA works but I'm well aware with how racing orgs (don't necessarily) work... A kart track is gonna be WAY tight to run a full size bike on in race situations. You MIGHT be able to enjoy lapping the circuit - but racing will be tough unless you all run pocket bikes. Kart track safety equipment also isn't necessarily up to the task of stopping the mass of a bike & rider. Most karts that race on kart tracks have a kart & driver minimum weight anywhere from the low 300# area up to the low 400# neighborhood neighborhood (classes intended for heavier drivers). The blast ALONE is in that 400# ballpark and is gonna have more speed than a Sumo kart. I gotta shut up now. -Saro |

Saro, Don't shut up just yet, I value your opinion. You have firsthand knowledge of Kart racing, I don't have any racing knowledge except as a spectator. I was just thinking Grange because the location, relative inexpensiveness, and the fact that I've seen some really great Supermoto racing there. That and the fact that I wouldn't have to go through the expense of paying for a racing license, novice races... I'll ask the guys at the local bike shop what they think of Grange for a Blast race day. Most of them have been there with full size bikes (GSXR's and SV650's) to fool around, and have ridden Supermoto there. James |

Saro, There is no problem at all with mixing the Blasts in with say an existing 500 singles class. The only problem is that would restrict the Blast to just the one race. If they were run separately, you could get points in 2 classes. If I bought a Blast, it'd be nice to be able to collect points in at least 2 different classes because most Clubs allow you to get cumulative points in 3 classes toward an overall points championship. That being said, the easiest way to run a Blast class would be as a second wave within an existing class... but it'd be less attractive for a club racer who would like to have more classes to race in without buying more bikes. |
