The "gasket" looks like rolled up porch screen dipped in lead, as I recall. That was probably it. If you dig in there with a dental pick, a lot of it is probably still stuck to your heads. |

Yea, when compressed by the header, it can look like its part of the head... |

The exhaust gasket is REUSABLE! If you didnt pull it out, its still in the head. While its advisable to change it, I've reused it. Any gasket for an 1984-2003 Sportster OR Big Twin will work, so any shop that repairs HD's should have the gasket(though you may have to buy 2!). |

Okay so with the Jardine I've about figured from recommendations a 45/175, but my dad also recommended shimming the needle with a tiny washer....I was just curious if anyone knew anything about this? I haven't read of anyone doing it on here so I don't know exactly how important it would be, I'm assuming it might just help throttle response a little or what? |

Yes I've done it, but you could also switch out to the M2 needle which has a different profile that works as well as shimming - either way - however, shimming should only be done after you've jetted and put the pipe on - some exhausts will not need you to shim - if you have a slow or hessitant takeoffs, or dips between 2000 and 3000 - then do so, otherwise don't bother - 0.01 - usual shiming for Blasts, for other bikes/Buells is in the 4000 to 5000 rpm range to take care of dips there where comming off the primary onto the main - that would be 0.03 - where you have your power dip is the area you want to aim for - the sportster have an adjustable needle that is mentioned in Nightriders that you could use as well. Don't forget your air mixture screw 2 1/2 to 3 turns out from bottom. GT - JBOTDS! EZ (Message edited by ezblast on November 07, 2004) |

Does anybody know of an exhaust shop that can make a custom pipe based off your own design -- and just make it work? I've only been able to find one place online with a mandrel bender that would be capable of creating a custom bent - Flat track style exhaust for the blast. I know old builders had a trick to pack the pipe with sand, weld on some end caps, and apply lots of torch to get a smooth bend. Anybody know of somebody still doing it that way? Or possibly just willing to cut and weld several sections of pre-bent mandrel stock? My design, unfortunately, requires rear-sets, so I'm not quite ready, but I'm obsessed what can I say? |

yeah. The mandrel bending shop I found online was in L.A. I think. I was looking for somebody closer to home. I'll have to locate a good old fashioned blacksmith by word of mouth I guess. |

Any body who makes custom auto headers can do it as well as an auto exhaust place that has a pipe bender that doesnt collapse the pipe at the bends (assuming you want 1 3/4" all the way, otherwise any exhaust shop with a pipe bender can do it-not hard)Also check out marine exhaust makers (doesnt Minn. have a lot of lakes?). |

Mandrel benders cost $225,000, most automotive exhaust shops don't have one. A crimp bent exhaust would be counter productive - so automotive exhaust shops are basically out. I've never heard of someone replacing their boat exhaust. Yes, minnesota has lots of lakes and boats. But, most of the boats in Minnesota are fishing boats under 20' and have outboard motors. Those recreational boats with inboard motors typically have headers that terminate directly into the hull and under the water-line for sound deadening, and which last for the lifetime of the boat. As far as I know, there is not really such a thing as a marine exhaust bending shop -- at least in these parts. I found a website for a company out of ohio that makes custom exhausts for old Nortons and pretty much anything else. They are exactly what I'm looking for, but I'm afraid they'll need my bike in their shop to get the fitment right. If you want to see what I'm thinking. I'm posting pic in the pic thead. |

A couple of pics of the Pro-Series that I've had on the bike ffor over 15,000 miles. The rear mount is cracked, probably from my crash last year, and the pipes are cracked from when I grounded the pipes while off-roading. All in all I was happy with the pipe and will replace it with andother Pro-series unit. It was a tough call between the Jardine and the Pro-series, but I had to stay with the Pro-series. James |

LOL- you should see my Kerker exhaust, i think the guy who owned the bike before me must have been doing something wrong, because the exhaust is almost completly ground through on the bottom. I need to get a new muffler for it. |

I'd mount a can in lieu of the crossover pipe and regain some power - there are really endless choices using some basic universal exhaust hanging hardware out there from the various vendors to mount almost any can you choose! To make a long story short James and I traded stock exhausts - I needed to beat a loudness ticket and him to restore the stock look to his bike at the time - I still have his beater around in case of any other loudness tickets and secondary boat anchor - ya never know! You still got yours James? GT - JBOTDS! EZ |

The numbers don't tell as much as the curves - all dyno's a bit different. Both are good units though and either choice will probably bring a smile to your face. Got Thump?! Just Blasting on the Dark side! EZ |

BMHD-Dan: I remember a while back you were fooling around with mounting a drag pipe on your Blast. Do you remember if the pipe would swing under the bike like a stock blast or only to the side like a harley? |

I've been searching thru the archives and I havent seen any followups on the jardine system. How loud is it, and more importantly, how well does it hold up? |

The jardine pipe when you first get it will be around 92 decibels. 4 months later and still shiny as ever but has gotten louder. Have a feeling I will get another month or 2 out of it before I have to repack the unit. Called Jardine to see what the interval should be for repacking. Jardine told me to knock on the side to see if it sounded hollow, if the muffler sounds hollow and you get the ringing sound it is time to repack. So far holding up great. |

I've read thru the exhaust archives, and nobody has complained about the factory brackets on the stock anchor. Actually the bolts on the rear bracket. I wonder why they didn't just put a 1/2 inch hex head bolt in there instead of the allen heads. Thats one hell of a place for allen heads, where u can't see them to figure out the size. I guess they don't realize how much easier hex heads would be. And what the F is with the switching between metric and sae sizes????????????? |

We dont complain cuz once its (the stock exh) gone, we forget about it! All my bolts were sae threads and I think regular bolt heads would not fit is why the allens. It is quite a piece of work, that mounting system. One wonders why they had to go to such lengths. |

The trick with the SAE / Metric stuff is to keep in mind what's made where. Suspension? Japanese. Engine? American. You'll get the hand of it... Agree on the exhaust bracket bolts, though! The first time I was under there I nearly had a fit. It just doesn't seem like such a big deal anymore, though. -Saro |

Ohhhh, the fun of removing the boat anchor. All in all, it's still very very preferable to removing the footpeg brackets. If you haven't tried THAT yet, just trust me on it. lol... |
