I know the design is different but will it bolt up to the 2003 model or are the holes different.

Yes, the 2004 belt guards will bolt right up to the swing arm on the 2003 models. I installed them when I installed the 2004 belt system. Makes tire changes MUCH easier.

I wouldn't need to switch the belt system to use the guards, would I?

Speaking of belt guards.... I had a hex head bolt fall off the bike (looks like it goes to a body panel somewhere?)Anyways this bolt fell down onto the belt somehow and ended up punching right through the belt when it went around the gear. I don't know if the 03 guard has better coverage or not but its worth looking into.

Idler pulleys and sprockets are different which might put the '04 guard in a position to interfere with '03 belt or sprockets.

The '04 guards will not provide near the protection as the '03 system.

James (12bolt),
Did the belt fail, or were you able to get it home or to the shop okay?

Nope. I pulled the bolt out of the belt and road it home 20+ miles. I plan on changing it out when I get some days off.

If you put the 04 guard on the 03, there will be a gap as the 03 pulley is smaller in diameter. I bought the 04 polished guard and am going to have to tack weld some additional coverage to it...

Yeah the head of the bolt got pretty chewed up. Funny thing is I still havent found where it came from? Looks just like the bolts that hold the air box cover on.

12bolt, look at the bottom of the rear fairing just above the belt. Those same bolts are used there as well.

I wonder if that's something the warranty would cover?

Might want to check the sprockets too. If it was me, I'd be asking with resolve for a warranty repair of all related damage. Unless that is I was the last one to have the belt cover off.
