That's a tough one as there's just so many good ones.
Blues - Albert King
Rock - Jeff Beck
Progressive Rock - Frank Zappa
Is Les Paul considered Jazz?
Heard a little Gary Moore the other day on the radio - he's great!

Let's see who's able to guess. One of my favorite rock guitarists. I'll never claim someone to be the best, but he's good very though. Hint: along with a few other band members he died in a plane crash in 1977.

Another one is Tuck Andress (From Tuck and Patty). This guy is simply amazing. If you like good guitar play and haven't heard of him, pick up their album "Tears of Joy".

Stevie Ray Vaughan
Joe Satriani

And for country my vote would have to go to Vince Gill. The guy may be more well known for his slower ballad type music, but he can play guitar with the best of em.

Mr Satriani ROCKS!
Sure does, I think if you could put him & Stevie competing against each other, Joe would win. It would be close tho.

Another guy I think kicks @ss is George Thorgood. Saw him at the Chicago House of Blues a couple years ago. Non stop jamming for almost 3 straight hours, was a hell of a night.

"Mark Knopfler would be high on the list..."

Yes, saw him live, he is a magician, as is Clapton live. L. Buckingham, Joe Walsh and Don Felder. Randy Bachman is still rocking!
