Last night I pulled up at friends house for a few minutes 5 or so and He looked down and said hey your front header pipe is glowing?I just put on jardine and K and N filter less than 10 miles ago and pulled snorkel.Whats going on here?Will someone maybe let their bike idle in the dark for 5-10 to se if I'm just freakin out or Do I have reason to be.Oh yeah I have stock ECM and No Techlusion 04 xb12 Someone help please |

Mine did the same thing, I suspect an intake leak. |

I've heard of this happening to a few people. I would say it certainly points to a lean condition. Adding those parts would indeed make the bike run lean. Did you run the bike at about 3200R's for ten minutes to allow the ECM to relearn? |

I cant honestly say I ran it that long straight at that rpm yet.Does it still apply if I did that say...tomorrow.Or Do I have to disconnect battery or reset somrthing else since I have ridden it for about 10 miles without doing so?How and where do you check for intake leaks? |

Just ride it for ten minutes at ANY time to let it re-learn the conditions. You won't need to reset anything at all. As far as checking for an intake leak... Do a search. |

I'd be willing to bet this is coming from a rich condition. Bear with me here. I ride and sometimes race dirtbikes. On my YZ426F, a four stroke, letting the bike idle with the choke on will turn the pipe cherry red at night. I believe this is coming from the gasses continuing to burn as they are pushed out of the exaust valves and into the head pipe. Not sure if this is what is going on with your buell but thought I'd throw it up there. |

It's possible yes, but adding parts to free up the airflow will result in a lean condition, which will also cause red hot pipes. |

this summer i pulled into the dark garage, if having the bike about 2 weeks, the garage light was out, i parked, and freaked, same thing, glowing headers...brought it back to the dealer, ill harley, they reset the tps, pipes still glow, they said not unusual....i got use to it, now have 5k on the clock, still have red hot headers, but i dont worry about it. |

sounds like its lean.does both header pipes glow or just one? If one pipe is glowing i'd say you have an intake leak on that side, if both are glowing, its too lean.tfi will help.hope this helps. |

To check for an intake leak..Start the bike and let it idle..Spray a low combustible material...I use WD40....around the intake manifold against both heads..if the idle increases you have an intake leak... |

My front header glows as well if I'm idling for extended periods or stop and go. I've asked a couple dealers, they called Buell and were told it's not an indication of a problem and that they might have a lean condition. I have some mods to mine that did lean it out quite a bit. Put the techlusion on and richened her up a bit, big difference, no more glow. Seems the lean condition was my problem at least, dunno if that helps any. |

Check the plugs to see if you're too lean or too rich. |

Somebody posted a chart of glow colors versus temperature when this topic came up a while back. My Cyclone would do it, and it did not have any intake leak. Search far enough back in the archives and you can find where I posted a rather panic'd message about the whole thing... It had been a REALLY long day (starting with a broken exhaust header stud). |

Looks like here are my evaluating steps in order 1.Ride bike 10 mins 3200rpm 2.check plugs for color 3.Check for intake leak 4.get techlusion installed..then 5.take reducatis approach and just ride it...as they are not glowing till I stop and am idling for a bit Thanks everyone for the advice. |

I never tested in the dark. But after the Techlusion, my engine is running a lot cooler (based on the less felt heat) and my fan not come on while riding at highway speed (it used to all the time). |

Too rich wouldn't cause the pipes to get hot.Lean though would for sure I've seen "too rich" cause a catalytic converter to glow but never the pipes themselves, I agree. |

Well I rode the bike 10 mins at 3200 rpm,checked plugs,alright.So tonite I Put snorkel back in and rechecked??Well I found it only to be the front header pipe that is glowing?I really dont have any idea where to spray the wd 40 or less of an idea of how to get it(WD) there(to the intake).I really hope I do not have an intake leak.If so Is this something the average person could fix,what I'm trying to say is: Is this an easy thing to do or It require me to fight with dealer and warranty issues(since I put Jardine and air filter on myself)?I have all winter to dicker with it so I'm in no rush, but I do not want to have a HOTPIPE .If it were both I would just get }the techlusion installed.If any one has any suggestions,please fill me in.Thanks} ; |
