well the only thing i will give ford is the gt40 (both new and old) 1 tidbit, the new car is simply a GT. They left the 40 off the name. And it is one sweet car, as is the new 05 Mustang. |

The Pinto was actually a very popular car & a great seller. It wasnt until late in its lifecycle that the "fire" deal hit the airwaves. Chevy had its share too, the Vega wasnt exactly a great car by any means & the Chevette...now there was a reliable hunk of garbage. They all had crappy cars in the 70s, Granada, Cordoba, Volare/Aspen, MustangII, etc. |

Craig, the Corvairs really werent that bad. Nader just had a hard on at the time & it was his bad publicity that did the car in. They were much like the tube frame Buells where some had issues..in fact some had big issues, but by & large the majority were good cars. The Aztek is good car/van/whatever it is....just uglier than anything else on the road. When I was looking for a vehicle 2 months ago we looked at it as well as 1 other ugly car...the Honda Element. Now both would probably have served my needs very well, but they are simply too ugly for me to own. |

Hey you guys forgot to mention the Vega!!! buddy of mine found one of the "one millionth vega" bright orange ones, stuck a 350 in it and we had some serious fun with that thing. Sucks stopping at a toll booth when the clutch linkage pops off, though. |

Firebolt02083: It's a small thing, but true: (so Iv'e heard) The original "GT40" was actually only 40 inches tall(hence the designation), but the new version cannot achieve the same dimensions due to "whatever" regulations.(short answer) "What match's the BUELL to me is the Triumph TR6." Turbo Miata for me!!!!! Different machines, but after the ride, the SMILE is the same |

I left work, had a couple Bass's w/ my good friends, had dinner... I'm back though . Donald... I didn't say they had nine... They had twenty more (before the '04 season), Chevy gained eleven (this season). Now they have nine more. I'm certainly a Ford fan. Not exactly fanatic though as I like ALL cars. Yes... Literally every one of them. My favorite is the GT-40. I think the Corvette is an awesome car. The ONLY problem with it that I see is that a person can buy a Mustang GT and put a good $20K into it for the same price and have gas money for a good long while. That investment in the Mustang will give you a car that will walk the **** away from anything you can buy south of $250K. Both in a line and in a corner. I agree that the Corvette is a more capable car than the Mustang in stock trim, but there are a lot more options with the Mustang. If you just wanna buy it and ride it... Get a Corvette. If you like to play with stuff... Get a Mustang. The Mustang is both sides of the coin. If you want a classic car... Get an old Cobra of ANY year. Or a Corvette. If you want a car that you can put some time and effort into and have something special... The Mustang is the way to go unless you are going stock, then the Corvette is generally the better choice. In any case, lets talk racing . What championships does Chevy compete in compared to Ford? Ford competes at the international level a LOT better than GM. I'm talking engines here... One of their subsidiaries does make a decent F1 aero package, but they have nothing to do with the engine. Ford has been in the F1 game on and off since it's inception (or close to it). REAL technology comes from F1 (and to a certain extent NASCAR). Ford lets their engine company play there, GM does not. GM plays pretty much solely in big inch V8's. They do them pretty well though... If you look at the number of really legendary engines, Ford designed about half of them. Everyones always talking about "Why does ford keep changing stuff every few years... with my chevy I can take a part off of a old 350 and put it on a new one...". Uhhh, yep... I can't say that's completely bad though... If I fabricate a four link rear suspension w/ TA and Watts Link (I'm mostly going to copy HotRod Magazines geometry but add the Watts) and use various front suspension components from an old Chevy truck and early eighties Monty's I should be able to turn my truck into a VERY capable track weapon. On my mustang, the front suspension is fully adjustable (Toe, Camber, Caster anyway... and it's easy to modify for a better camber curve). I'd still need to fabricate a rear. In any case, that speaks to the different design philosophies between Ford and Chevy. I like Ford's approach. Sure, they botch things up now and then, but so does GM. IMO though, either company is capable of making things that are truly good. Both my 72 Mach and '92 Sonoma GT (#482 of 806) are fine examples. I do prefer the Mustang though . |

Not against the Ford Mustang. Ford hasn't raced Le-Mans in a while now. I agree, the Corvette wins were commendable, but they weren't using a Chevy designed engine. The Cadilac years were nice. They are now using the Caddy as the "workhorse" racer and reserving the Corvette body shape for their "special" races. They had to buy a European company to make it happen though... For was successful in European racing LONG before they acquired Jaguar. |

"That investment in the Mustang will give you a car that will walk the **** away from anything you can buy south of $250K." u cant tell me u can get a mustang to walk away from a gt or a viper both of which are below the 250k mark. |

I have a Ford with 142,000 miles and refuse to give it up. Mobil One since day one and shows no signs of stranding me. For what it's worth my partner at work has a pristine TR-6 and they still bring back memories. Court (who actually had a brand spanking new Vega GT in 1971 and went through 2 engines and 3 transmissions and CAN'T blame Chevy for all of it... ) |

The GT goes for more than $250K. I know the "list" price isn't that high, but the selling price is. Bill Gates bought the first one for $350K and set the going price. They're selling like hotcakes. The Viper is a good car, but yes, you can build a far better car out of a Mustang for the same price or less. The trick is the building. It requires more than just engine work. You need to replace the suspension system too. As a side note, the '05 Mustang GT should have 400HP... You don't need to go much further to get to 450 where the Viper is. Also, you can build an OLD mustang for even less that will compete with late model race cars... Oh, and you CAN make a Mustang compete with a GT. Keep in mind, the GT barely eeks out better lap times than a 360 Modena. (Message edited by m1combat on December 03, 2004) |

I rode home from the hospital when I was born in a a new 63 Corvair. My Dad had 7 of them total, I think. As far as Fords always having problems? 102,000 miles now on my 99 Expedition and no problems at all so far(I've put 30,000 miles on it this year). I have had, let's see, 11 Fords that I can remember. All were good cars/trucks. Kandie has had about the same amount of Fords(smart girl she is) and hasn't had any problems with any of hers that I am aware of. None in the past 6 years she's let me hang out with her. I also have had 3 AMCs(Hey Dyna)3 Jeeps a Chrysler(100.00 car) and still have my 92 Dodge hunting truck. You know what? They were all pretty good too. The only thing I have never owned is a GM product so I can't say how they are, I've just never really liked anything they build. |

Maybe I was thinking the Cobra then... In any case, even starting from 300, It's not too entirely difficult to get to 500 with the amount of money left over, still rebuild the supension and have a LOT left over compared to the price of a Viper. Heck, for the price difference you could probably shoehorn a dang Viper engine into the Mustang and still have a lot of money left over... Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying the Mustang is abetter car than either the Corvette OR the Viper, but for the money it can't really be beat by hardly anything out there but the likes of maybe a Turbo'd Miata (another Ford product BTW...). I'm just saying the bang for the buck is VERY good with the Mustang. It's not good with the Corvette or Viper (when compared to American cars... You start throwing Ferrari's, Lambo's and Porches in the mix, the bang for the buck on a Viper or Vette start to look a bit better, but still nowhere near the Mustang. Anyway, back to racing... Can you find a form of four wheeled "main stream" motorsport that Ford doesn't dominate? Dirt or pavement. I'm not going to say I know everything about racing (or even close to it) so I'm sure there is something... I think the main battle right now is in the ALMS series. Ford only has a privateer effort going though, where GM is running multiple teams with Vette's and Caddy's... |

Corvair, I knew I was related to you. We had 4 in my family. I just gave away my copy of the Factory Assembly Manual, I figure my days with those cars are done, replaced by another quirky machine. |

73 Gremlin with a 360, edelbrock intake, Carter afb carb, competiton cams camshaft, built 727 torqueflite tranny, 3.92 rearend. Could not get any traction at all. 9.5" M&H racemasters slicks heated up real good would still spin all the way thru 1st gear & half of 2nd. Best time I could run at Great lakes was a 12.6 @ 118mph...just wanted to spin & spin. |
