I would also recommend drilling holes in the airbox. Do a few searches and you'll see exactly what I mean... I do think the largest difference you will see out of the two will be from using the 12 airbox. |

Is it worth drilling the 12 airbox also? |

anyone have a pic on how/where to drill? I've made a few inquiries...and those in the know claim that more is not always better...just looking for some direction also on the intake mods...also, in theory i would think that the air intake, snorkel and upper inner air box would be designed to work together...any feedback on this? Thanks, --ts |

I also have a 2003 XB9R with XB12 airbox, K&N filter, and the snorkel removed. I like the sound with snorkel removed. I cut the top part of my snorkel off and used it (plus some insulating foam tape) to seal the airbox baseplate to the air intake channel that runs through the frame/fuel tank. This makes the best intake sound and also seals off hot air coming from the motor. This combination of mods has been shown through dyno testing to add a couple horsepower. Also the bike just feels better to me. I believe that drilling the airbox on a XB12 would make it louder, but I don't know if anyone has proven that it significantly increases power. Mike. |

thanks guys, interesting stuff, 4 bikes, 4 owners and 4 solutions...very cool. xb9er, good point regarding the sealing so as to promote cold air flow... jersey, are you running an aftermarket velocity stack? thank you, --ts |

xb9er-do you have any pictures of how you sealed the airbox baseplate to the air intake channel? Thanks |

Most people just cut down the stock snorkle to only be a couple inches long, it seals things nicely at the cost of only a small obstruction. |

Is the airbox mod worth doing when you have a 12 airbox. I know the City X comes with the 12 airbox. |

I would say yes just based off of the sound I get out of mine. It seems to pull better at higher RPM's, and I think it's not really affected at lower RPM's. |

I agree with M1. Does it perform better? Yes, I think so. Does it perform worse? No, I don't think so. But without Dyno's, who can say for sure, and it was not worth the $70 it would have cost me to find out, if the difference was so small I could not feel it riding the bike. Does it sound better? Absolutely, no doubt. That was enough for me. |

Has anyone ever done back to back dyno testing with removing the snorkel alone? Also, has anyone done any dyno testing with the air filter element? I'd like to see a comparison between the stock filter, the K&N, and no filter. Mike L. '04 XB12R |
