DAY 21, cont. well, 'cause i'm about to violate Utah for the third time on this trip (the "Welcome to..." sign right behind me even said so, but as i'd already bagged a couple of "WTU" pix on this ride i didn't think you needed to see another one), and in about 20 yards i'll be lucky to find a cold beer for sale, much less a decent bottle of Irish Cream. DAY 21, cont. a little later i was hunkered down in Richfield, Utah for the night, enjoying an Irish Cream glow and doing a bit o' laundry. i had enough spares of everything else to get me home but i was short on fundawear, and decided the sink in my motel room would serve as a temporary Maytag. DAY 21, cont. no, you're right, they WEREN'T completely dry the next morning, but a few minutes with the in-room hair dryer and i was good to go! well, i hadn't done too bad today, mileage-wise, managing to get another 439.2 miles closer to the magic number - 7500 - in spite of spending an enormous amount of time behind the lens. the odo showed exactly 6068.0 miles when i tucked in the bike tonight in Richfield, tantalizingly close to my mandatory goal. the reality, then, was that i needed to log an additional 1432 miles in the next two days. doable enough, you say? yeah, certainly true, but after having been on the road for three weeks straight i have to confess that 700-mile days had lost some of their charm. in addition, i knew that maintaining that kind of pace for the next 48 hours would prohibit the time-consumptive yet richly-satisfying process of playing Joe Photog along the way. um, right??? DAY 22, cont. as you might imagine, it would have been easy to hang around for a bit. i REALLY wanted to look inside - visitors ARE welcome - and even i rode up to the front door, but i knew i couldn't take the time. (Message edited by jerry_haughton on November 30, 2004) |

DAY 22, cont. well, when i accidentally stumbled onto Nebo Loop NSB, while scouting a route around Salt Lake City, i knew that in terms of making any significant time today i was now Officially Screwed. (Message edited by jerry_haughton on November 30, 2004) |

DAY 22, cont. Nebo Loop (from the south) climbs immediately, gradually at first, then dramatically, with a fervor and urgency matched only by my own. this is looking back down the valley that i'd justed twisted up. (Message edited by jerry_haughton on November 30, 2004) |

DAY 22, cont. the next seven shots are in series, taken at wide angle, yet it still took multiple exposures to capture the panorama. just imagine, for a moment, riding thru this paradise. the air was crisp and still. there was no traffic. the sun was high enough to provide warmth, yet it was cold enough to make the reality of this rugged, mountainous environment, well, real. folks, i gotta tell you, THIS is why i've ridden so long. and why, to this day, when dreaming of "The NEXT Ride", i get all flushed with anticipation and excitement. wish y'all coulda been here - you would've NEVER wanted to leave.
