I like the church's gate. If you locked the gate, the Newfies wouldn't be able to get to church!

Alex,

That place was indeed Bay Bulls, NL.

Bay Bulls has a very long history throught the years. From German Subs being captured and kept there during WWII to pirates chasing down boats and taking them.

I have found my Encyclopedia of Newfoundland and here is the excerpt from Bay Bulls.

pop. 1976, 1104). An unincorporated community but part of the St. John's Metro area, Bay Bulls is situated on the east coast of the Avalon Peninsula (the Southern Shore) about 29 km (18 mi) south of the city of St. John's. As E.R. Seary (1971) writes, ``the first original English name, unique in a nomenclature otherwise seemingly Portuguese, is Bay of Bulls'' which first appeared on a manuscript map by Thomas Hood in 1592. The name may refer to the Common Dovekie, also known as ``bull-bird'' or ``ice-bird,'' a regular winter resident of the Newfoundland waters.
The settlement at the head of a long curving bay is one of the oldest in Newfoundland. The harbour was used by the French in the Sixteenth Century but by 1635 Englishmen were wintering over at Bay Bulls. According to tradition, Governor David Kirke qv fortified the harbour in 1638 but in 1655 Bay Bulls was raided by the Dutch Admiral *De Ruyter qv. By 1681 Bay Bulls was second only to Ferryland along the Shore and there were over 100 semi-permanent residents there, including women, children and some planters who remained year-round. Provisions were obtained mainly from New England traders, and several dwelling houses, warehouses, planters' ship's rooms, train oil vats and stages had been erected. Some animals were also kept. Bay Bulls was visited by the sack ships and was the harbour where convoys customarily assembled, especially during times of war.

In the century 1696-1796 Bay Bulls was attacked five times by the French, from both land and sea, often in conjunction with attacks on St. John's and as part of the French effort, in the early Eighteenth Century, to drive the English out of Newfoundland. In the fall of 1696 *Mombeton de St. Ovide de Brouillan qv, Governor of Placentia, attacked Bay Bulls from the sea. The settlers fled to the woods when the fort to which the Captain of the British naval ship had retired was captured. In January 1697 Pierre *Le Moyne d'Iberville qv marched overland from Placentia and again attacked Bay Bulls. (In the 1970s Dr. V.C. Barber and members of the Newfoundland *Marine Archaeology Society qv began excavation of the wreck of the Sapphire qv, the British frigate sunk in action with the French under de Brouillan in 1696. The Sapphire is thought to be the oldest of three ships found buried in silt in the harbour at Bay Bulls.)

In 1705 Bay Bulls was again invaded by the French, led by Daniel d'*Auger de Subercase qv. After a winter march overland the French sought shelter and provisions from the Bay Bulls residents before moving on to attack St. John's. In 1762 it was Admiral d'*Arsac de Temay qv who led the French against Bay Bulls. Nathaniel Brooks, then Justice of the Peace at Bay Bulls, led the inhabitants overland to Petty Harbour where he boarded a boat for Halifax and later returned with Lord Colville's fleet which successfully defeated the French. The last French attack on the Colony was in 1796, when Admiral Richery qv attempted to storm St. John's, but finding it well defended he attacked and burned Bay Bulls, where he also took prisoners. His forces completely destroyed a battery of six guns which had been erected on the south side of the bay in 1778 according to a defence plan prepared by Robert Pringle, a government engineer. The battery had been paid for by community subscription and had been manned for some years before it had been allowed to fall into disuse in 1784. The battery was rebuilt in 1813 but was maintained for only two years. The site is now marked by a Provincial Historic Sites plaque.

By the beginning of the Nineteenth Century the residential fishery was firmly established at Bay Bulls. The population had grown slowly over the preceding century and, as increasing numbers of settlers arrived from Ireland, Roman Catholics began to predominate where formerly Protestants had the majority. The churches of both faiths had been burned in 1796 but only the Roman Catholic church was rebuilt immediately. In 1864 the Church of England church was rebuilt and consecrated by Bishop Feild. By the 1820s a Roman Catholic priest visited regularly but it was not until 1879 that Bay Bulls had a resident clergyman. In 1890 the Roman Catholic Church of St. Peter and St. Paul was rebuilt. At the gates of the church, serving as pedestals for statues, stand several of the guns used in the engagements with the French.

By the 1850s there was a Roman Catholic School Board at Bay Bulls. At this time Bay Bulls was considered a fairly large settlement, with 100 boats at the inshore fishery. Potatoes and hay were grown, and Bay Bulls was a Port of Entry and a Postal town. In 1921 the Sisters of Mercy opened a convent at Bay Bulls and assumed responsibility for education, both primary and secondary, in the community. One hundred and eighty children enrolled the first year.

In 1931 Dr. Harold Thompson qv was selected by the British Empire Marketing Board to become Director of the *Fisheries Research qv Station instituted that year at Bay Bulls. The laboratory operated for a few years only. When the building, then leased to a trading company, burned down in April 1937, exhibits in storage from the Newfoundland Museum were also destroyed. During World War II Bay Bulls was an important naval base leased to the Canadian government, and docks and buildings were constructed for naval repairs.

In the early 1900s there were five merchants at Bay Bulls. In the 1970s there were several general stores, a restaurant, a tavern, export agents and a fish plant. The O'Brien family of Bay Bulls are involved in several fish plants in the area and Con O'Brien founded the successful Newfoundland Quick Freeze Company. Bay Bulls is the site of the RCA-Bell Canada receiver and transmitter for Telestat. Microwave signals from space satellites convey television, international radio and telephone communications to Newfoundland through Bay Bulls. See MUSEUMS

Bill- Addemdum to your history lesson-

July, 2004, a sole Frenchman of English heritage tried to infiltrate St.John's from the back door. He was routed out by a brave Mountie and then dispatched by several Canadians and Americans who sent him back to Europe with his tail between his legs.
One brave Canadian spy (with the help of an American from NY) even watched him overnight to make sure that he wasn't able to accomplish his evil deeds.
All this was done under the guise of a freindly get-together to keep the French government unaware of our supreme intelligence gathering system.
We have now caught wind that he intends to travel to the U.S. next year and try to subvert the Americans who may be less able to fend off his advances. We will be well ready for him and plan on massing vast resources to keep him occupied and prevent him from accomplishing his deeds.

Steve-
You would have had to have been there to understand. This Frenchman has yet to be widely famous, but is fast on his way.

The comment about the gate at the church reminded me of a story my father-in-law tells. He is from Minnesota so they get a lot of Canadians travelling through: Not too long after getting married he and his young wife were driving the old farm pickup down the road. They stopped to pick up two young Canadian boys that were hitch-hiking. He had them get in the back of the truck since there was little room in the front (and he was worried about them sitting next to his wife). Well Minnesota is full of lakes and when he went around a curve too fast they drove off into one.
After swimming up to shore his wife looked at him and asked where the two boys were. The husband dove back in the water to see where they were. When he came back up the wife said "Well, where are they?" he replied "They're still trying to get the tailgate down"!

Been a while since I visited this thread, Rob (Team) has me coming back. Received this a few months ago, and has been hanging on my cubicle wall ever since.

Thought this is, perhaps, closure to the trip. Matt is doing well, aside from battling chronic fatigue, which is typical for one who has undergone the treatment he has. We've a weekend planned to hang siding at his new house in Grand Rapids, MI in the upcoming month, can't wait to see him again.

I wear one of the RANE patches on all of my riding gear, it takes me back to an amazing ride, great new friends and a great cause. Thanks to all.

I've had thoughts about another, Florida to Alaska, We'll see what happens in about three years..
