I had the same thought! I'm sure our long-haired brother is fine, but the story is sickening (as if both hunting and firearms ownership weren't under enough attach as it is) a more fitting punichment may be to dress him up as a white tail, and turn him loose in the samae area as a bunch of newbie hunters with buck fever and bad aim if memory serves, Dave is off work on Mondays |

Dave goes hunting in Iowa anyways. And according to the article, plenty of people use SKS's for hunting????? A semi auto assault rifle to hunt deer??? |

On the Anti-Gun thing - TOO MANY DANG GUNS On the Non-Anti-GUN thing - could have happened if it was a bow or any other type of object that can cause deadly force. I'd say stricter regulations could possibly make a difference. That being said - we had a pizza joint held up with a shotgun Saturday night - Its easy to tell the time of year as the crooks are becoming more desperate - Merry Christmas. |

Yes, I'm OK. I saw the story on the news last night. Does Wisconsin have the death penalty? If so, this guy would be a prime candidate. Dave |

No actual court imposed death penalty. But the prisons have a way of dealing with people like this. See Dahmer & Jesse Andersen for examples. Both were beaten to death with a mop handle by an inmate. Somehow the guards never saw a thing. |

http://www.jsonline.com/news/state/nov04/277439.asp?format=print A local radio station this morning was broadcasting that charges haven't been brought against the shooter yet. I'm thinking there's more to the story than what has been reported so far. I just hope justice is served and that any backlash is minimal to the rest of us all. So you shoot 8 people, killing 5 and injuring 3 including one critically, with an assault weapon !! |

CJ, just tossing out a guess. Who knows what the hell happened out there? Obviously the dead folks aint talking & the survivors are going to gang up & make sure their story says they were all peaceful like. Read this portion of the article "In the past Minnesota officials have reported some clashes between Southeast Asian and white hunters, who complain the former refugees don't understand the concept of private property. Authorities said they had not determined whether that played a role in Sunday's shooting. Vang, a naturalized citizen, spoke good English and investigators said he was cooperating with them. The sheriff said he was "extremely calm." In the Northwoods, where Wisconsin's deer hunt is steeped in tradition and pride, there were already signs of racial tension. "I don't know what's wrong with everything. It's pathetic. They let all these foreigners in here, and they walk all over everybody's property," said Jim Arneberg, the owner of the Haugen Inn in nearby Haugen." And you could certainly draw the conclusion that the good ole boys obviously dont like to see the "foreigners" on their land, do a little drinking like a lot of the hunters do & they start doing stupid stuff. I cant see a guy rapping off a magazine full of ammo at some folks just for the hell of it. I'd be willing to bet the told him to get down & out of there, he might have had some verbal words & then one of the locals rapped off a shot or 2 in his direction. The guy freaks out being shot at & just goes to town like its WW3. Not saying thats what happened..but its possible. I work with 4 guys from Laos & as a type of people they are extremely passive & it takes a lot to set them off. |

You may be right, seeing the news I figured it had something to do with it, didn't think it was totally unprovoked, just still can't see killing that many people justified without any bodily harm to himself ??!! CJ |

Will be interesting to see how it unfolds. If this guy is just nutz & started shooting folks for no reason..well hang em high. But if they started shooting first & then he returned fire couldnt that be self defense? |

If you have a dozen hunters that can't hit one person, I dont think they were trying too hard. Either way, he killed 5 people, and tried to kill more. |

With the information so far it looks like two possible scenarios. A. The guy went nuts and just started shooting people. Certainly possible and wouldn't be the first time something like that happened. B. The other hunters shot at him first and then he defended himself. According to reports I have read only one of the victims was supposedly armed. It seems sort of odd that a group of guys out deer hunting would hear of a disturbance at a deer stand and then rush into the woods, leaving their guns at the cabin. It's possible but it just seems odd. Even myself, the "big pacifist" would grab my rifle before I headed out there. Why not? I would have it with me anyway if I was deer hunting. Oh well, I've got to agree with Mikej. There is probably more to the story that hasn't come out yet. |

Must have thought they were in Texas and attempting to steal his lunch or something!!!! Bloody sad either way you look at it. Who uses an automatic assault rifle to shoot a deer - for jesus sake you can almost wrestle a deer to the ground and strangle it!!!!! |

He wasn't using an automatic rifle either. It was a semi-auto. Semi-autos are pretty common rifles for deer hunting. My brother has a Remington 7400. I have a Marlin 30-30 lever action. Anyway, a semi-auto rifle is not uncommon for deer hunting. Ten round clip? That is a little uncommon. |

Semi automatic hunting rifles are very common in the Northwest (Have 3 of em myself). There is a magazine capacity limit of 5 cartridges though when you are hunting. Very sad that this incident had to even happen, whatever the cause was. |

Semi-autos yes...but an SKS? Thats an odd choice for a deer hunting weapon, course being the guy is from the pacific rim, in fact he may be from Laos then it may be the only gun he knows. |
