um, while I'm at it: 2000 X1 red stripe I've been eyeing the carbon "ham can" and wondering if I should defile my stock airbox plastic and stuff a ham can through the side of it. I am wondering; is there is a good way to tastefully accomplish this? (or even, if there is any point?) thanks, Dan |

Can't really see the point of modifying the Helmholz box for a carbon ham can. You'd be nullifying the advantages of both systems. Better to either use one or the other. |

well, you can't just remove the plastic because the real x1 tank sticks out the bottom. Plus I think the plastic keeps the symetry a bit nicer. So I had considered an oversize cutaway in the side of it. don't know. just a thought. |

Leave the plastic boxes on, they make great sliders. |

Dyna's correct and they cost under $30 each at your local HD/BMC Dealer. Plus you can sand and paint the scarred ones for a different cosmetic look. Just use a good primer to fill in the grain. |

Keep the stock air box. If you're taller than like 5' 10" then the carbon ham can will bug your left knee. If I wasn't so lazy, I'd put the stock airbox on mine(it came with the "race kit". |

Besides & maybe im in the minority here but I actually like the look of the stock side plastic pieces on the X1. Gives it a tough kinda burly look. |

Steve, if you're interested in losing the race intake, let me know. I'll even help you put the stock box on... |

some have said to get rid of the "snorkel tube" inside. is there any point to that? should I use a bigger or better air cleaner? IMHO K&N has got to be the BIGGEST ripoff racket in the world of aircleaners. -I'm settling in for the winter and need some "projects" to keep me going. |

I have had a K&N on every bike I've owned. Once you replace the crappy paper filters on a Yamaha a few times, you've paid for a filter that will last the life of the bike. YMMV I removed the Helmholtz tube on my M2, rerouted the breather lines to a catch can, got rid of the filter housing & tossed in a stock replacement K&N. No dripping oil on leg or bike, ( catch can ) & I can now hear my valve train very clearly. I don't have Dyno #'s, but sotp it's a little better. Check out the X1 files web page. http://www.saintjohn.nbcc.nb.ca/Marriott/x1/ |

Did all the mods from the X1 Files on the stock air cleaner including the Jazz Can and am extremely pleased with the results both on the road and on the dyno. |

FWIW.....As a result of dyno runs on our old X1, I can state that there were no differences between no filter, K&N or the dirty 7500 mile paper filter. I just left the paper one in. The tube went, however.

Outrider..Are you talking about the gutted air box mod with the venturi ring? I did that mod and I like it a lot. Cheap and simple..the way I like it |

This is how I modified my air box. When I got my bike new I could hear a rattle and i traced it to the stoke air filter. It was loose. I tried tightening down the long torx screw but the to covers would not hold the filter tight. So this is what I came up with. It fits under the stock cover and i get a nice intake honk now. It seals out dirt alot better now. BTW I like the look of those big ugly plastic things. Al (Message edited by raceautobody on November 17, 2004) |

I had discovered the air filter is in no way held against the side of the airbox!!! no matter how tight the fasteners. so I made a zip tie strap the holds the element against the opening. I showed this to my dealer once when I was in for 10,000 mile. they had replaced my air filter and cut the ties, and didn't replace them. I went to pick up the bike and made them take it back off and replace the straps after I showed them I could put my pinky past the air filter. I like the big ugly plastic things too. makes it look like a stingray! |

Go to the X1 section of American Sport Bike and look for tank accents. |

Hey Steve, When I painted my scoop and air box cover I noticed a molded in transition of two types of texture. Was that something you placed in or was the texture revised. It made a natural stopping point for the paint and I think it looks like it ment to be painted. BTW that is what makes an X1, just my .02 Al |

Those big plastic covers look great color-keyed to the body. It really tones down the size on the filter side and makes the air-cooling scoop more noticeable - they should have come that way from the factory. All black plastic makes the X1 look like a pregnant guppy to me. |
