DAY FOURTEEN, cont. alright, NOW we're having some fun! in honor of the fact that Ed has a Buell because of ME he gave me the privilege of popping if off in his tiny little garage. it was cool 'cause i knew instinctively where to reach for everything, just how much choke to pull, just how much accelerator pump to squirt, and just how much throttle to crack. POW! it fired on the first kick, and made the most bitchin' racket in there. (ps: prolly a good thing i hadn't put on my "Honda Racing" t-shirt that morning...) DAY FOURTEEN, cont. which, cleverly enough, is conveniently attached to Cindy's new house!!! REALLY happy for you guys, Ed, and if you keep up this kind of program MAYBE we'll stop calling you Hillbilly! had a great visit with the Manning's - Ed, Cindy, and Brittany - and we burnt beer and slurped beef and fantasized about someday soon kicking back on their new porch and livin' large. thanks for the hospitality, Ed, sure appreciate it, and glad we finally met after all these years. (and ain'cha glad i was into Buells and not Suzukis back then? then it REALLY would've been my fault.) ------------------------------------------- well, from a riding perspective this day was a bit of an anticlimax, but then again, the Blue Ridge Parkway is a tough act to follow. we'd done a solid 300 miles of not-so-super-slab today, a fair share of it with rain gear on as Ivan began to make his presence felt. no one was expecting any wind to speak of in these parts, but like everyone else in the South we were pretty well glued to the Weather Channel, and we all knew what was coming. or, more accurately, what was finally here. TOTAL MILEAGE ON THE DAY: 355.0 (Message edited by jerry_haughton on November 09, 2004) |

Day fourteen was wet and purposeful as we stayed glued to I-64 west bound all day. After crossing into KY Hillbilly dropped us off the freeway for some great twisty stuff in his back yard. It was nice to be off the road early for a change as we had been on several event-filled days. We(Ferris and I from Buell origins)had finally added the Buell facet to our fortnight on the road via Ed's Psyclone. Kim(wife, bird-mom and rockhound) was pretty happy this day too since I officially collected my first fossil. It literally jumped out of the ground at me, just ask Ed! BTW, Buella only share two beers with me, we consumed the rest up on the hill while breaking in Ed's imaginary front porch. What a night! |

Thanks for the kind words guys. Jim, 2 brews are expected out of a half Rott half Pit pup. Nothings politically correct about this place. Jerry, For those that dont remember PACBOG, It was the first and foremost internet Buell site around seven years ago when I bought my Buell.Just so happened that PACBOG was Jerry's baby. Anyhow I'd been firmly commited to Honda VFRs since 1983 but had a hankrin for a hot rod sporty remembering how expensive the American exotica Buells had been earlier in the decade I hadnt even considered them. Well one night I email PACOG and Jerry calls me back. After a very enthused sales pitch I'm out buying a new M2 and forget all about the Sporty and my beloved VFRs. So yes its Ferris fault. Not that JB2 curbed my fanaticism when he dared me to dyno the M2 the next summer at Mid-Ohio.I met Jim in the parking lot of Hales HD-Buell while gutting my airbox for a K&N and a velocity stack during a dyno shootout. A pretty much unheard of thing to be doing then. Oh,and in case you havent followed this adventure closely, Jerry and Jim started this major land assault on ---Honda VFRs---. Gotta love these two, HillBuelly |

JB2, agreed about the 'purposeful' part. not the first time on this trip we needed to put our heads down and get it done, nor the last. what a night, indeed. Ed, thanks for the fond memories of PACBOG. you're not the only one i infected with the Buell passion (see, i DID learn a thing or two from hangin' around with Court!), and i hope someday soon that my journey comes full circle and there's another Buell parked in my garage. thanks again for showing us a good time. DAY FIFTEEN, Friday 9/17/04 me 'n JB2 bunked upstairs last night, sleeping just a few feet below the metal-skinned roof of the lovely Manning Manor, allowing pretty much unfettered audio-access to the sound the rain made all night. it rained hard enough to wake me up several times, but as i'd listen in the dark to the pounding above my head, invariably, after a few minutes or so, the rain would let up a skosh and i'd slip back to sleep. rain. rinse. repeat. well, the HEAVY rain was waiting for us the next morning. "Kentucky, my name is Ivan, and I have the remote control now." the shot above is my intrepid friend JB2, managing a smile (actually, he DIGS stuff like this ) as we pack the bikes smack dab in the middle of a hurricane. note the creek backin' up against the road in the background. DAY FIFTEEN, cont. there's very little in this shot to provide scale, but know that this is a SEASONAL creek, and when we went to bed last night it was dry. JB2 estimated that the level rose about two feet JUST in the time it took us to ready the bikes. (Message edited by jerry_haughton on November 10, 2004) |

DAY FIFTEEN, cont. the white spots in the photo are rain drops, frozen in time by the flash. Ed had the day off, and had originally planned on escorting us across Kentucky. as JB2 and i busied ourselves with bike prep, i noticed the Hillbilly was still in his house shorts. yo dude, like, wuttup? Ed's mama didn't raise no fool. that being the case, he opted to stay on the porch, drinking coffee and keeping the Spidy Twins pleasant company. as we couldn't load up the scoots in Ed's tiny garage (i bet you're REALLY lookin' forward to your new place, my friend ), we donned our raingear and loaded the bikes in the yard. i had a towel over my head the whole time, trying in vain to keep my hair dry, and trying to afford some protection for my Nikon as i grabbed these pix. when we were finally ready to go, Ed brought out new towels so we could at least attempt to dry our hair out a bit before climbing into our helmets. see ya Hillbilly! look out Ivan, the Terrible Two are comin' thru!!! DAY FIFTEEN, cont. ...then entered Indiana AGAIN, via a different route. if none of this makes sense, that's ok, as i was there and it's not particularly clear to me either. (just kidding, just kidding... ) it's a fair guess tho that MAYBE why we didn't get pix the FIRST time we rode across the Indy border was because it was RAINING SO FREAKING HARD!!!!! i'm not entirely sure what time we left Ed's but it was early-ish morning, and it was almost four in the afternoon - and an entire state away - before we finally got to stow the raingear. soup was on the menu all day, and it wasn't Campbell's. i'll spare you all the gory details, but there are NO pix, notta one, of our escape from Kentucky, and it wasn't until we were well inside Indiana that the Nikon again saw the light of day. we got stuck in a massive traffic jam on some freeway somewhere (JB2 will clue me in as to exactly where soon enough) and as we slogged along the interstate we could actually see the rotation of the clouds from the hurricane. and at this point, nearing the edge of the storm (which would lead me to believe we were already in Indiana for the first time), the rain was finally letting up but the wind was finally coming into play, first hammering from one direction, then from another, then from several directions at once. what we experienced was, really, pretty minor in the scheme of things, certainly NOTHING that would compare with what the folks along the coast suffered, but still, it was a full day of clicking off miles in absolutely miserable conditions, suckin' it up and gettin' it done. DAY FIFTEEN, cont. and then POOF! we're out of the slime and makin' some time. JB2 had not done a good job of preparing me for the beauty of Indiana. we didn't see many twisty roads, but the colors and textures and overall visual presentation of the state kneally socked my rocks off. DAY FIFTEEN, cont. i was fascinated by this place. partly, i suppose, because it wasn't raining. more so, really, from trying to imagine a time in which the most logical way to move your product from point A to B was via a small canal carved thru the Indiana countryside. it's a beautiful setting, in part because of the sound of so much running water, and i tried to imagine how cool it must have been to see a boat raised or lowered in one the locks, and then sent on its way. if you ever ride close to here - "here" being US 52 just east of Metamora, Indiana - slide in, stop and sit a spell. DAY FIFTEEN, cont. somebody will have to help me with the significance of the signs, i just thought it made for an interesting photo. wish i'd had the time to play with the compositition some more, and had the sun been closer to setting it would have softened up the lighting and really added some richness and color.
