Looked over in the knowledge vault and couldn't find the answer to my concern. Is it o.k. to use synthetic oil in the Buell trans after 10,000 miles? if so what is a good brand. Just installed a Banke shifter which made a big difference. Time to change fluid so was wondering. also thanks to Buellidan for the shifter | ||

I have been using Mobile 1 synthetic gear oil in both my Buells since break in, as well as 15-50 in the engine. I know a good number of Buellers using this combination and have never heard any issues. I have heard of issues with another synthetic gear oil that was popular for awhile, it apparently gooped-up after awhile causing problems. The one other synthetic that I would consider is the new HD synthetic that you can use in both the gear box and engine. It is a bit pricey, but has obviously been approved by HD if you have that concern. | ||

Yeah, you cant go wrong with Mobile 1 synthetic gear oil. You should actually be able to notice a difference in your shifting compared to dino oils. | ||

I switched at 5000 miles and within 100 miles of running through the gears shifting got noticably better. The first gear launches to second gear got much better if I shifted faster when going hard and slightly slower when just rollin' I would recommend it in the primary anytime after break in is complete...for the motor I would wait a little longer to let things seat a little more...that is why I waited until 5000. I am at 10000 now and shifting keeps getting better and better with time. | ||

I have over 50,000 miles and am using Mobil 1 75w90 in the trans with a Banke shifter. This is so much better than stock. I tried the HD synthetic and it took way too long to warm up in the trans before I could get into 1st without lots of clashing noises. Once warm it was slick though. I still use dino oil in the engine and am worried about using synthetic because of high mileage and it uses oil now. I think synthetic would zip right thru. Anyone know about synthetic in high mileage engines? | ||

Everyone who posted a reply, thank you. I will go with Mobil 1 synthetic gear oil next week during tranny maintenance. Again, THANKS!I do think i will stick with regular oil in the engine though. | ||

what's your complaint with the original organic stuff? you know- being that your trans' bath is shared by your clutch, a friction-reliant component.... | ||

S3- I've been using M-1 on my '99 since about 5kmi. I'm just about to 50k now. I did do a top end last Spring, more because I wanted to than that I needed it. I also switch to 5W30 for the winter and don't have any appreciable loss with either. | ||

i've run only spectro v-twin formulation organic oil in my S2t for the past 213,000 miles, never pulled the topend (but it needs new rocker box gaskets) and i've always run 20w50 year-round, even in the subzero garbage that i soemtimes have to commute in. still run spectro's version of sport-trans organic in my trans,too. never saw the need to change to synthetic. maybe at 300,000? I had heard that synthetic gear lube works better in the tranny than organic. Was not all impressed with the stock X-1 shifter setup. So as I put above, installed a Banke which is similar to the upgraded 2001 buell shifter and noticed improvement. I was just wanting it to be better. |
