Just bought an 03 Xb9. The bike has a knocking sound underneath the chassis. Now is this normal because of the sound modulators or not normal. I use premium gas 76 brand mostly. Do any of you experience a little knocking? |

Engine related? What are sound modulators? What does gas have to do with it? Do you suspect its pinging? Yes, I have a knocking/ticking sound from the valve train, and I learned to live with it. If yours is engine related, use a screwdriver as a stetoscope to trace were it is coming from. |

The knocking is at idle so if that's normal than I will be fine with that. The motor is quiet compared to a harley motor in a harley chassis. The muffler keeps the sound down, so you don't hear as much rumble. I thought it had to do with how the factory mounted in the chassis at the factory to keep the rumble down as well. That's what I meant by sound modulation. (Message edited by curveswerver on November 01, 2004) |

It's normal to have valve train noise... Using a stethoscope you should hear some racket in the heads and some in the cam cover... |

Does it get less when the engine is hot? |

Yes it does. I ride to work everyday 20 miles there 20 miles back. 10 miles in on the destination it's not as evident as when started cold. Maybe that's the bike's procedure to be warmed up a little. |

I let it warm up for a couple of minutes then I take for work. |

Yes it will. The pushrods expand a bit and the lifters get pumped up so there is less slack in the valve train. |

Cool, I guess that explains it. If that's the case, I will be fine with that. Thnx for the input M1combat and Ingemar. When I bought it the guy did not have a manual to go with it, but I'm going to get one shortly. What octane does the manual suggest for 03 XB9s? I've been using 91 premium. yep 91 minimum per the manual, but you could experiment. some get away with less. |
