I looked in the knowledge vault and did not see anything on this. I have a 04 XB12R and this is the third Ignition switch relay failure. I am going to the dealer but would like to know if anyone else has had this problem? Good thing I have not been stranded, I just swapped the starter relay and push started the old beast. |

hmmm very curious failure. 3 relays you say. any burned fuses? any low or high voltage trouble codes stored? relay failure is unusual, 3 in the same position is very interesting. keep posted, dean |

The ignition relay supplies power to the ecm, fuel injectors, ignition coil, fuel pump and the data link connector. The "key switch" relay supplies power to the ignition relay and the lights, so it carries more power, I would expect it to fail before the ignition relay. Perhaps a bad batch of relays? This could be tested by putting the known good key switch relay in the ignition relay position, and putting the new "suspect" relay in the key switch position, and wait to see what happens (swap the positions of the 2 aft relays on XBS models). If the relay in the key switch position fails you will lose the headlights as well. (Message edited by opto on October 28, 2004) |

I've bought three 31522-00b relays now, none work. Swapped FI and Starter relays on my bike, the good one I already had works properly in either position. HD says there's a new relay 31522-00c, so I got one and put it in, now 0 for 4. Any ideas guys, I've been parked for three weeks waiting for the c relay, after the three bad b relays. The new c relay worked in the FI side for about two starts. Now, it indicates failed also, but the failures had been in the Starter relays before this one. The new c relay didn't work at all in the starter side. |

Ok, my bad. Still head swimming, I tore a relay apart, the new one that I couldn't return due to purchased in Virginia. Then I went to the bike and jumped the relay, and discovered I had flipped the FI and Starter relays in my head. That meant, the good one on my bike was really the bad one being flipped around. Bad one out, bike running fine. DUH! But now I have plenty of spares... |
