I just bought a new bike, SB9SX, (pronounced suburban cross) and paid $250 total for freight and set up combined. Someone is trying to take you for a ride. If you've been to the factory, you know they are crated almost ready to ride and very little is done at the other end. | ||

you do not have to pay for setup, nor do you the purchaser have to pay for "freight" you may well have to pay a state sales tax, and in addition you have to buy your own gasoline. but the other stuff is very carefully camouflaged dealer profit margin. | ||

The one that gets me is the Document fee...usually around the $60 area. Thats strictly for the salesperson to fill out the paperwork. | ||

Well - I'm both fed up and disappointed - the $790 in fees plus the outrageous insurance increase it would cost me have led me to the conclusion that I can't afford to buy - sadly. | ||

If I could afford the insurance, which went up to 2000 / year after adding the XB9SX - I'd take you up on your offer. Having read through previous posts - you seem to be a straight shooter DaveS. | ||

That's seems awfully high on the insurance.  I hope you can get that reduced somehow so you can get the CityX. It is a great bike. I'll vouch for Dave being a straight shooter...at least on things Buell. I don't know how his hunting went this year.  | ||

Well, I didn't get charged anything on top of the price in the UK for my CitX. But then, I did pay $11,007 in US money.......Penalty for living is Rip Off Britain. I'm defo moving stateside just as soon as the little person is a bit bigger. (She's only 11 months). We're also paying $6.94 a gallon over here for gas.... | ||

My 9sx was 8,695 witch is the same price that is on the website. Dont know if i got a deal but dont feel ripped off. I thought it was a fair price. Would never pay over sticker msrp. Dont think i was charged a fee or it was just rolled over to the whole cost. | ||

MSRP doesn't include the freight. The dealer is charged 215.00 on top of the invoice price for freight. The MSRP also does not include the set up fee. This should run 100-200 depending on the labor rate in your area. Some dealers may choose to absorb this into the MSRP, other may choose to try to "up" the charges to the customer. I guess it depends on the dealer. Some dealers advertise low prices but then make up for it with high frt and setup fees. Whenever you buy something you need to look at the bottom line number, it's the only one that matters! I could advertise my 05 XB12s for 100.00 plus fees and then add 10,395.00 in fees! | ||

So I wrote an email to my dealer this morning and they thought it over (I guess) and gave me a call - they offered to cut the freight to $295 and the set up to $195 - effectively lowering the cost by $300 more. I thought that was reasonable so I will probably get the bike but there is that matter of insurance - called a few places today - Markel, Sentry, Progressive - each had a high rate on the Buell with the best deal coming in at $1132 a year for full coverage (Sentry / Dairyland). Felt like that was still awfully high for one bike - called the insurance rep that my dealer recommends - they offered me $889.00 (same coverage) for both the Buell and my 919. Not too shabby. Dave...Not questioning the dealers right to charge for set up but would like to know what all the dealer has to do to prep a bike before it goes on the showroom floor. Please advise. | ||

Uncrate the bike. Look for any damage(takes longer than you think) Check battery voltage Install maxi fuse check oil lines check cold oil level check primary drive for adjustment and oil level Inspect fuel system for any leaks Check low fuel light operation check all lights and gauges, set clock check tires for damage and set to correct pressure Check brake fluid levels, frt and rear check headlights for proper adjustment, adjust if needed Road test bike at low speed, check for, Shift from first through third gear, checking clutch operation, throttle control, and transmission operation. Verify low-speed braking for front and rear brakes. Verify handling under braking conditions. Verify low speed handling. Verify that vehicle does not pull to left or right. Check for any abnormal vibrations. Check electrical lamps, indicators. Road Test of Vehicle: Highway Speed Shift from first through fifth gear, checking clutch operation, throttle control, and transmission operation. Verify highway-speed braking operation of front and rear brakes. Verify proper handling at highway speeds. Check for any abnormal vibrations. Engine Oil: Check and correct hot level. Create Vehicle Birth-Certificate using Digital Technician: Clean Vehicle: This also takes longer than you think. AT POINT OF CUSTOMER DELIVERY Suspension Adjustments: Adjust preload, rebound and compression damping front and rear. Brake Pedal Height Adjustment: Shift Linkage Adjustment: Brake Hand Lever Adjustment: They also forgot, Fill with fuel! | ||

Whew...That's a big list of chores and well worth the little bit charged. I noticed you didn't mention anything about checking fasteners for tightness or torque. You know, the big stuff like motor mounts steering head bearings and the rest of the frame and drivetrain stuff. Am I correct in assuming that that is the factories responsibility? At what point in a new vehicles service schedule would the servicing dealer check these items under the guise of their "full service" program? Not fishing for anything legal here, no bone to pick with anyone and doesn't apply to my Buell. I am just looking for my personal information concerning my Wide Glide. According to the owners manual, that kind of stuff is done at the 10,000 mile service. |
