I did a search for this topic and could not find it. I found out the hard way the other night that unlike my XB9R, my XB12R does not have a kill switch if the kickstand is left down and you pull out. We had just ran Deal's Gap and the Cherohala Skyway and were in Maryville, Tn. I was waiting for my group to catch up and I had the kickstand down. When I saw them coming I pulled out, thankfully there was a red light just yards from where I was sitting and one of my buddies rode up to me and said, "fool, your kickstand is down". I checked my friends XB12R. His does not have a kill switch either. Checked my wife's XB9SL. Her bike has a kill switch if the kickstand is left down. Hope this isn't redundant. Eddie |

Mine doesn't have one either... It seems to kick itself up pretty well when I lean on it at speed though... |

My ol Honda has a thick flap of rubber at the end of the kickstand such that if you rode off and leaned over into it, it would kick itself up. Bummer to hear the the 12's do not have a kill switch. I've, uh, made use of my kill switch and I gotta say - I love the way it's implimented. I'd wanted to know what would happen but did not want to tempt risk by trying it on purpose. For those curious, it acts something like a rev limiter - the more you try to let out on the clutch and go, the more the engine is restricted, until it is finally killed if you continue to try to go. It is not an instant kill - I was afraid of that as I would imagine "that" would cause the bike to jerk and make it prone to tipping. Quite thankfully that is not the case. |

The CityX doesn't have a sidestand kill switch either. I have mixed emotions about it. The switch malfunctioned on my Ducati once and I had to wrestle with it for 45 minutes before I could get the bike to go. |

My XB9R HAD one and went bad about 40 miles from home. I had to McGiver it with a staple from a magazine I found in a ditch. Next service the tech offered to fix it. "Thanks, but no thanks". |

This has come up recently at Sport Twin and here. From what riders have been reporting, it seems that Buell stopped installing kickstand starter interlock or "kill" switches on XB's with the 2004 model year. Mike. |

Wow. I'm shocked at that. I've always been grateful to have mine (2003 XB9R). It's saved me more times than I care to remember. Good to know. |

Sidestand is designed such that it retracts when touched down. Tons of testing done to prove it. Interlock switch is redundant, and just adds one more part that could go bad. So, it's gone. |

What do track day organizers think of not having a sidestand switch? Reason I ask is most of them check to make sure its functional, you dont run on the track unless it works or you have to remove the stand. |

I have only had that checked once out of 39 track days I have done. They checked at the last one because of a guy that borrowed a friends bike and went out on the track with the stand down, he crashed and got hurt. They were being extra careful. I knew mine didn't have one so I held the front brake, let out the clutch and killed the engine. Dave |

I agree that its no big deal & its about time the things were done away with...hell the tube frame ones were always being by-passed anyways. At Blackhawk the stand down wouldnt really be that big of a deal since we only really have 1 left hand turn |

Well, nice to hear from anon. about this. Glad to know I have one less part to worry about going bad on the bike. |

Greg, You might want to inform your track day organizers that one of the primary reasons that having a kickstand on bikes on the track is prohibited in racing and some track days is that people that would have otherwise been fine, have been seriously impaled by a kickstand in a crash. Strongly suggest that you at least tie-wrap yours firmly in place during track days. I did away with my Cyclone's kickstand safety switch long ago. The rubber thing works. I made sure of that before leaving the switch shorted. Bradly (Midknyte), I'd be very surprised if the switch is not a mere on/off type. What you are likely experiencing is intermittent shorting on/off switching as your clutch is just barely activating the switch. Kinda like how a light switch can be positioned to cause a lightbulb to flutter between full on and full off. |

I remember my fist experience with the kickstand switch. I pull out of the parking spot and my bike almost dies. Its like Midknyte says, it doesn't quite cut off, but its like the engine is going to stall. I limp it across the parking lot into another space, put it in neutral and let it idle for a few minutes. Then I try again and the same thing happens. I'm about to park it and go call my wife to come get me, so I go to put the kickstand down. Dohhh |
