OK, here's the scoop. The PC ones I ordered are shipping today! The ones to work with the Palm units are not ready. What we can do is for those of you that want a Palm system, you can get a PC system now, and when the Palm version is done and ready, send the PC software back to Technoresearch and they will send you the software for the Palm instead. At no charge except shipping! Those of you that wanted Palms, you want a PC one for now instead? Please let me know today by emailing me at, daves@h-dappleton.com Thanks! |

Dave, Anyone can download the software for free. The software, however, will not work without the smart adapter. The adapter for PC is different from PDA/Palm. So if I understand correctly, you will need to send the hardware back, not the software. |

DC... I would bet dollars to donuts, all you will need is the cable that matches your PDA, which you have to secure yourself anyway. The box has a serial interface, it could care less what is sending signals, be it a PC or a PDA. So, in all likelyhood, if you buy the PC version, have the box, have the right cable for the PDA, and can somehow get a copy of the PDA software, you are good to go. |

Reep, It does not work without the smart adapter. I wondered about why it came with an end-to-end adapter. I took that off and tried using different types of serial cables to no avail. So it appears that the adapter contains a chip or some encoding stuff. |

Ahhhh! That answers the other question I had for them that they never answered, the "what does the dongle do" question. Did you try it on two different bikes? Does the cable get "married" to one particular bike upon first use? |

Reep, The software is good for various bike makes. The dongle determines the software features available. So the dongle is only good for that particular bike make. Different dongles for different bike makes. That's why the professional model comes with different dongles. |

Reep, I guess I didn't answer your question. I guess you were inferring whether the same software/dongle will work for different XBs. I have only one buell XB so I couldn't try on different XBs. Since the CFG files can be deleted anytime, the same software/dongle can be used on different XBs. When the CFG files are deleted, it triggers the initial setup for detecting the bike make. |

I'd bet that the software/dongle is good for every bike that is supported (as the website lists it), but for one pc or palm or handheld device. So, the combination software version/dongle makes it work in that particular combination on that one device. Putting your cable to another type device without a dongle/version that is supposed to work together is not gonna make any sparks (I *think*). Installing the software to a similar device and plugging in the dongle for that type should (in theory) work as well. But still leaves you to using it only once at a time. No experience with the mentioned product though, just experience with other products that use dongles. Hope that helps. |

From their site:
quote:Personal Vehicle Identification -Harware-key (PVIHK) - By plugging this device into your computer, the tuning center can re-flash new maps into your bike electronic control unit. Pertinent information about the vehicle is also available. View owner's name, vehicle identification number, calibration ID, etc.
Thats what I am wondering about. I have no idea what it does, if it is necessary, etc. I was just curious. Sooner or later, somebody will try and hook up multiple XB's and we will know, no big deal. |

Reep, that is from their tool "Engine Tuning". The Vehicle Diagnostic Scan-Tool Software specs do not list such a device. |

I don't think so Hogs. Quote from their site
quote:The Vehicle Diagnostic Scan-Tool Software for your PC, PDA & Scan-Tool ... powerful enough to be used in any vehicle service department.
.. and ..
quote:The VDTS works on a variety of vehicles (see Supported Vehicles for detail information). The VDSTS is the official vehicle diagnostic tool used by major motorbike manufacturers.
Not really useful in a service department if it could not be used on multiple bikes. (Message edited by ingemar on October 13, 2004) (Message edited by ingemar on October 13, 2004) |

Well in that case its a whole lot cheaper and paying the dealer for the 25.00 bucks or so Thats too bad I won`t be buying three units just to have the convience of doing my own tps resets as little as they are needed anyways... |

Hogs, my mistake. I edited the last sentence to make my point a bit more clearer. They claim its ideal for a service department. My point is that that can only be the case if its useful on more than one bike. The second quote has vehicles in bold, because it implies more than one bike. I am confident that IT CAN be used on more than one bike. |
