Hi All, I have been a lurker of BAdWeb for a couple of years but now I'm coming over to NY for a weekend and need a bit of information. My 99-X1 has always puked a little oil and I have installed "The Cure" (made no or little change). Making the bike ready for winter storage I noticed that it now has started to smoke some through the exhaust. Keeping my fingers crossed that there is no piston ring/valve problem I thought of changing to XB rocker covers. Can someone recommend a NY city dealer that I can contact to get them? I will be staying in mid-Manhattan. Thanks in advance, D. Oh, forgot to say; this forum is wonderful. An invaluable source of great information. I owe you old members many thanks. |

I can only recommend staying away from all of the NYC dealers! Edison in NJ - about 30 - 45 min ride from Manhattan - has gotten good feedback here. Also, Kosco rides and races Buell. No personal experience. Henrik |

Check the plugs...if they have caked on crap on one side it'll be the valve seals, if it's just sooty all over it may be rings. You can get a compression tester for about $40.00. |

Thanks for the tips guys. I'll be sending a few dealers mail to check availability and pricing until I get into town. The prizes on your side of the Atlantic are so much better that I cannot miss the opportunity once I'm over. I will check compression and valve seals but I figured that I will do the rocker upgrade anyway, when I'm at it. BTW, Henrik, danish or norwegian ancestry? //D. |

Danish Give me a shout when you come to town. Maybe we can hook up for a beer. Re-reading your first post; do you just need the parts? If so, how about ordering them from Daves (a sponsor here) and have them shipped to me. That'll give you the Badweb discount and save you the sales tax as well. I won't just swipe them and put them on the S2 .... promise Henrik |

"Check the plugs...if they have caked on crap on one side it'll be the valve seals" A leaking exhaust valve seal will not show up on plugs. |

If your bike is smoking due to leaky valve seals, they'd all be fried anyway. |

OK. Latest update: Removed the plugs: rather sooty and black evenly around. Did a compression test: 210 psi for both cylinders, i.e. a lot better than expected. So, two culprits left to hunt down, breathers and/or valve seals. I have ordered the XB rocker box covers to remedy possible breather problem so now I will remove the heads and check the valves. Having a whole winter to do this I reckon I have plenty of time. Thanks for the pointers everyone. |
