Damn, you guys sure are sensitive about your buells. I came here open minded wanting to find out why you guys ride buells but some of you sound a bit insecure. I didn't think it would be fair to make up my mind after hearing just one side of the story. Isn't that what forums are for

You bet!
Go test ride one or more of the bikes you are interested in and please report back what you find works best for you.

Keep in mind that most companies tout top speed,1/4 miles times and HP numbers.

Also keep in mind that about 95% of anyone's sportbike riding is between 30-80 mph and none of us are good enough riders to ride any of the modern sportbikes to their limits in the curves(you know, where sportbikes belong)

NO,

One you Experience it, it becomes a passion.

Go to ANY sport bike night around the country, you will see 200-300 bikes that all look and sound the same. You might see 2-3 Buells, but when you hear them coming. YOU KNOW A BUELL HAS ARRIVED!

Skelo,

If the guys here are a little defensive it is because of exactly what you said in your first post. Too many people bad-mouthing the bikes we love. The new XB series from 2003 forward are amazingly reliable, incredible handling and all in all absolutely a bike to love.

The older tube frame Buells had some reliability issues, although they also were fun. But times have changed and the reliability problems are gone.

As far as parts on the bike are concerned, any XB has way higher quality components on it than almost any Japanese bike. So the guys who are dissing them just have no idea what they are talking about.

So, go ride an XB, and fall in love like we have!

Skelo,

Your right! I have an 04' 12R. It's a very nice bike and been trouble free. It's quick enough to never leave me wishing there was more throttle. If you like the styling you won't be sorry for buying one. I bought one instead of a Japanese bike because I wanted something that's not real common.

hahaha.....I tried to stop myself from posting here, because these topics come up from time to time and it is not worth the energy to explain it. If someone is that dumb not to try it first and understand why they are so superior then have fun trying to keep up on the corners.

All I have to say is be open minded. These bikes are not for everyone. If you want to be like everyone else get a CBR or a GSXR.

"I am interested to hear what you guys have to say."

Well, you heard it... We aren't defensive or in-secure as such, it's just that all of us have a good deal of experience with Buells and most of us have a good deal of experience with other bikes and there's a theme that generally develops... People sell other bikes and keep their Buells. You figure it out.

I was at the Dragon over the summer, and I passed, rode nose to tail of just about every 600 there. XB12S. 1000 are a different story. Ride what you like, but don't expect too many harsh words about Buells on this site.

Um, couple things. I'm selling my 2001 Ducati 748S because the bike I get on when I go out to the garage is my XB9S. Since I'm selling the 748, I've been riding it a bit more the last few days to enjoy it before it's gone. Tonight, I got on the Buell. The Buell is fun. It's fun to go to the store, the corner or the twisties. The Ducati needs a racetrack or illegal speeds on a twisty road to be fun. I like my Buell. It has character. You either like it or you don't.

Did his original post refer "600 Liter" sportbikes? I would love to ride a 600 liter bike, just once, in a straight line for a 1/4 mile. Otherwise, I'll keep the XB.

Let me share with you this story of my fist excursion with my new XB.

Had to go to a local Kawasaki dealership to get a new Jacket. The Salesmen didn't try to pitch me into anything in the store (as salesmen are wont to do)instead they wanted to know about my new ride. (2005 XB9SX) "Buell Huh?" "They overheat, don't have any power, use old technology,...ect,ect." I might add they couldn't take their eyes off it. I made my selection paid the nice lady behind the counter and was unhindered by pesky sales questions due to the fact that everyone was outside ogling my baby. (It was almost embarrassing really.)As I saddled up I over heard one of the Kwak guys mutter..."I wish my bike looked this cool."

They might take cracks and snicker at us but thats just to cover up their envy.

True story.

Had a ZX12 pull alongside on a straight stretch, shake his head at me, then zoom off. Caught him in the next batch of corners & sat comfortably on his tail for the whole section, chuckling as he tried to shake me. I can see my bike's image filling his mirrors on each lean. Next straight he shoots off again, lofting the front wheel a bit for effect. I catch him in the next set of corners, this time I take him on the inside, left boot toe scuffing a little from the lean. It's a longer/tighter batch of twisties & I don't see him again for a half-hour, when I'm fueling for the freeway home. He pulls up all bug-eyed & starts asking questions.

Own the straights if you want to; this hunk of crap owns the corners.

I just wish you guys would stop trying to sell Buells... The less people that own them the more I stand out. ; )

But you can ask my neighbour what he thinks of the Buell... He rides an R1 and is in awe EVERY time we hit some corners... He just lets me by at the start of anything remotely twisty now... ; )

If you haven't figured it out by now, it's not defensiveness, it's PASSION! This IS what Buell is all about. It's a machine that transends spec sheets, it's not about numbers, it's truly about the experience. Buells are bikes that you ache to ride once you had a little time with them. Even a quick test ride isn't enough, one really needs to experience them for a 'hundred miles or so. But once your bitten, there just isn't anything else that comes close to the experience.

skelo,

I test-drove the R1, R6 and CBR1000. I will admit the only reason I looked at the Buell was the insurance on the others. Once I rode the Buell I was hooked. Both my neighbor and I have bikes, he has the R1 I have the XB12 and we both have cars.

He works as a lifeguard I work in an office. I ride my bike to work every day he drives his car.

Your profile has very little information about where you live and how old you are to put the rest of us in the right frame of mind to answer your question.

If you are living in Miami and all you care about is being able to tout that you have more HP than some cars and that you can go 180MPH get the jap bike. Hands down they will give you that, I personally like the R1 to fit this need.

If you are looking for something you can ride everyday, at the same time looks good (it caught your eye didn't it) and its fun to ride with not a lot of excess, the Buell is a good choice. Then again it was mine so I think it is a good choice and I have no regrets.

Maybe figuring out what you want on a bike is the first thing you should do.

Good luck buddy with whatever you get. As long as you are on two wheels you are part of the family.

"As long as you are on two wheels you are part of the family"

True...I absolutely agree. I work in a college town and I wave at everyone...even the guys and gals on the Puch pedal moped. I actually have had a few of them ask why I waved and I simply said you are on two wheels just like me...isn't that enough?

Look at it this way. The 1/4 mile scores always seem to be so close with each bike. How hard is it to twist the throttle to go in a straight line. OTOH in the corners the rules change. Those top 1/4 mile times no long matter. What matters then is handling and skill. That is an area that the Buells excell in. If you want good handling and fast 1/4 times. Look elsewhere. If you want great handling and good 1/4 times. Check out the Buell.
