I heard Highway 178 was down to one lane due to a rock slide. If we are using it, I am sure it would be cleaned up by Oktoberfast. |

the lower Kern River Canyon, i.e Hwy. 178 between Lake Isabella and Bakersfield, shuts down several times a year due to rock slides and the like. no worries for Oktoberfast.
at last report "The Bostrom" (Hwy 155) is open for business.  |

recon'd the entire Oktoberfast route yesterday, all 330 miles of it (about 165 slated for Saturday, another 165 or so on tap for Sunday) - Pretty Sweet Stuff!
the temps are cooling off up in the Sierras, so bring appropriate gear. the weather forecast is good for this weekend, but they HAVE been getting the occasional mondo late afternoon thunderstorm up there - you shouldn't need it, but consider bringing rain gear if you have some.
y'all should have your reservations locked in at Montecito Lodge by now - call Christine at the number listed earlier if you don't.
ping me (e-mail in profile) if you need directions here to the ThunderDome, or have any other questions or concerns. BRING A SLEEPING BAG OR BEDROLL IF YOU CAN.
we're up for company here at the 'Dome anytime after about noon on Friday (and we'll begin forcibly evicting any stragglers about the same time-frame on Monday).

Scott, i agree about the mileage figures - it's all good. and these ain't your average, "ordinary" miles, neither.
barring any moments, we should arrive at Montecito early enough Saturday afternoon to unload the scoots and enjoy a casual ride up to the end of Kings Canyon and back, including a visit to Hume Lake.
speaking of electric vests, i'm wiring Denise's in to her SV tomorrow (so she can keep me warm when we get up there...)

Sandblast, it MIGHT not be necessary. they had a cold snap up there about three weeks ago, temps into the low 30's and an inch of snow, but the overnight temps since have been in the low 50's. best to be prepared up in the mountains - it ain't at ALL like where you're from.
this is part of an e-mail i got tonight from one of my best friends, Jim Corso, aka Pdxs3t - it is too good not to share:
"From atop Moro Rock, you can grasp the multiple superlatives that brought Sequoia, and eventually Kings Canyon, into the National Park System so early that Sequoia is now our second oldest national park.
To the north lies the Giant Forest plateau where sequoias rise above their forest neighbors. In cathedral-like Giant Forest, stands the 275-foot-tall General Sherman giant sequoia tree, whose trunk weighs an estimated 1,385 tons and whose circumference at the ground is nearly 103 feet.
To the west, in contrast to these gargantuan conifers, are the dry foothills with their oak trees and chaparral vegetation descending toward the San Joaquin Valley.
To the south, and down, down more than 5,000 vertical feet, the Middle Fork of the Kaweah River threads through its rugged canyon. To the east, snowcapped peaks of the Great Western Divide and the Kaweah Peaks top out on Mt. Kaweah at 13,802 feet. Just out of sight, beyond the divide, the highest mountain in the contiguous 48 states, Mount Whitney, reaches 14,494 feet of elevation.
Big trees, high peaks, and deep canyons in North America's longest continuous mountain range; superlatives abound amidst glorious scenery. Pioneering conservationist John Muir explored and named the Giant Forest. "When I entered this sublime wilderness the day was nearly done," he observed, "the trees with glowing countenances seemed to be hushed and thoughtful, as if waiting in conscious religious dependence on the sun, and one naturally walked softly and awestricken among them."

Oktoberfast 2004 - Saturday ride: 157.2 miles total
Leg 1 of 3 - Wofford Heights to Springville: 77.3 miles
From the ThunderDome turn right onto Bristlecone Drive.
0.4 - Turn right at stop sign at bottom of hill onto Wofford Heights Blvd.
0.5 - Turn right up Highway 155 (the Bostrom!), following sign for Alta Sierra/Glennville.
20.5 - Stop in Glennville at Crazy Horse Saloon for breakfast.
After breakfast turn left from Crazy Horse parking lot and immediately veer right onto White River Road, following sign for Porterville/Poso Creek Rec. Area.
1.0 - Turn right onto Jack Ranch Rd., following sign for Porterville/Jack Ranch/White River.
4.8 - Turn left onto Old Stage Drive.
17.4 - Continue straight ahead at stop sign at Fountain Springs intersection, still on Old Stage/Ave. 56.
8.5 - Turn right onto Rd. 264.
0.6 - Turn right onto Ave. 120 (later changes to Rd. 296).
7.7 - Turn right onto J42/Mtn. 137.
3.4 - Turn left onto Success Valley Drive/Mtn. 160.
5.3 - Turn right onto Highway 190, following sign for Springville.
7.2 - Stop at Chevron in Springville for water, snacks, restroom, etc. (36.5 miles to next fuel.)
Oktoberfast 2004, Saturday ride continued
Leg 2 of 3 Springville to Lemoncove: 36.5 miles
1.0 - Proceed through Springville and turn left at big white barn onto Balch Park Rd./J37, following sign for Scicon/Balch Park.
6.1 - Turn left onto Yokohl Valley Rd./Mtn. 296.
20.2 - Turn right at T. Although not well marked as such, youre still on Yokohl Valley/Mtn 296.
3.0 - Turn right at T onto Highway 198 toward the parks.
6.2 - Stop at Texaco in Lemoncove at junction of Highway 216 for fuel, snacks, water, rest room, etc. (NOTE: The next available fuel is about 50 miles away, at Stony Creek Village south of Montecito Lodge in the parks. It is 87-octane only, and is EXPENSIVE!)
Oktoberfast 2004, Saturday ride continued
Leg 3 of 3, Lemoncove to Montecito Lodge: 43.4 miles
From Texaco turn left (west) onto Highway 216 - do NOT continue north on Highway 198 toward the parks.
0.6 - Just over bridge turn right onto Dry Creek Drive, following signs for Hartland/Badger/Pinehurst.
17.1 - Veer left, following sign to Badger.
1.0 - Turn right onto Highway 245 at the Mountain House Saloon, following sign for Badger/Eshom Camp.
12.2 - Turn right onto Highway 180, towards Kings Canyon Park.
2.9 - Enter Kings Canyon Park.
1.7 - Turn right at junction, following sign for Sequoia Park.
7.9 - Turn right onto Montecito-Sequoia Lodge Road.
Oktoberfast 2004 - Sunday ride: 168.6 miles total
Leg 1 of 3 Montecito Lodge to Three Rivers: 44.2 miles
From Montecito-Sequoia Lodge turn right onto Generals Highway/Highway 198 and ride through park to the south.
44.2 - Stop at Chevron in Three Rivers for fuel, snacks, etc.
Leg 2 of 3 Three Rivers to Ponderosa: 74.6 miles
Continue south on Highway 198 from Chevron.
19.5 - Turn left (easy to miss!), following sign for Yokohl Drive/Balch Park.
3.0 - Turn left onto Yokohl Drive/Mtn 296, following sign for Springville/Balch Park.
20.2 - Turn right onto Balch Park/Mtn. 239/J37.
6.1 - Turn left onto Highway 190.
25.8 - Turn left at Ponderosa (easy to miss!) for dinner.
Leg 3 of 3 Ponderosa to Wofford Heights: 49.8 miles
Exit Ponderosa to the left, continuing south on Highway 190/ Western Divide Highway.
13.9 - Turn left at 4-way stop onto Mtn. 50, following sign for Kern River.
31.3 - Turn right in Kernville.
4.2 - Turn right onto Bristlecone Drive in Wofford Heights.

I just mapped out the route using my digital Thomas Guide. Wow, this is going to be some ride! And the countryside is going to be spectacular too! Can't wait.

Just an update on the ride........
I was unable to meet up with the group in Lemon Grove like I wanted too (sleeping in is great, sometimes) So I made the ride solo backwards (by their route) knowing somewhere I would cross paths with the group.
Holy cow, some of the most technical riding I have ever experienced through the park on the 198 side, 10-15 mph (yeah right). No more chicken strips on the right side anyway!
Rode all the way through both parks, stopped at the Monticeto Inn, no one there yet. Cool, still out there somewhere. Continue down to and out of the park, on to the turnoff at 245, and WHAMOO, ton of brillant colors and sassy machines parked in formation there at the intersection! Knew I would find them, sooner or later!!
And so started the headlight badgering, bull riding and "we need your tire" harassment I KNEW to expect when this fabled group was tracked down.
We badgered and BS'd for a bit, group massed up (tire thing was no joke, hope all went well with that endeavor) and I had to continue on my way, but not before meeting and shaking hands with some of the best people I have ever met on two wheels. A picture or 2 later (Jerry hope the head is ok!! LOL), and I headed down while they headed up to the lodge. Duty calls!
And as for the sign that says "skwigly line next 31 miles", uh, NO KIDDING!! I have NEVER scrubbed a tire that bad before!! Even the wife said "DAM" when i got back, and that was after 45 miles of highway "smoothing"!!
Thanks again guys for another reason to get out and on the edges, I will ride the Bostrom soon, and Jerry, you may have a weekend riding nag on your hands now!! JK!!
Hope you all had a great rest of the weekend, next time I WILL be a porch rat on Friday!

Octoberfast is Past
All made it to the Dome safe & very, VERY, happy.
We needed THREE tires, changing two at eight thousand feet ( mine by headlight!).
It was great to meet you RR, cool thing for you to do. I was the one rolling in late & slow nursing the shredding tire.
My fault thinking that I could get 2k miles out of a Dunlop 207. NOT!
Great weather.
Great friends.
Great ROADS!
Best damn ride I've ever had.
I learned that my boots scrape before the peg feelers do, which everybody pointed out was due to the size of my feet. On the other hand Viros is 20 mph faster than me do to how aerodynamic his boots are!
New tire already scruffed to the Metzler elephant.
Thank You Jerry & Denise who are great hosts.
Special thanks to Al who is a great guy.
Thank you everybody else for making it such a great ride.

i lucked out on the head shot - looking at the sharp edges on the corner of the sign after i whacked it i could have easily required stitches. as PDX might say, the motorcycling gods were smiling on me that afternoon as the impact barely even broke the skin. (and the sign is OK!!!)

Thanks for posting the pics...but all the beer bottles? Where's my Miller Lite photo?
Once again, anyone who missed the ride, it was the bomb. The lodge where we stayed was excellent. Well worth the money. I think that room, which was $89, was a steal! I had at least a $20 dinner of salmon, including desert and Starbucks coffee, and the breakfast too, all included in that room price. It is way too cheap. That place was a steal.
Hope U and D have recovered! Thanks again for a great, great time.

1. MUST have at least 1000 miles left on rear tire to attend. (rule courtesy of Al Lighton, American Sport Bike).
