Pulled my cams Friday night, swapping them out for a set of Andrews N8 cams. Found #1 cam had a small amount of metal missing from a the lobe ramp. No harm done, at this point. The lifter roller still looks OK and all, but another thousand miles or so and we would have had big troubles. Lucky I pulled them when I did. Anybody else seen this? This is troubling. The motor was running strong with no indications or symptoms. PS- about 12K on the bike since new (99 M2)

Yup. I saw this same thing on my 2000 M2 cams when I went replace my oil pump drive gear. I think mine was the #4 cam. Seemed to be working perfectly, no damage to roller, but an obvious chunk of metal out of it.

: ) I think it was just my M2... I think it was a late thursday before a holiday bike or something.

As much grief as the thing gave me, it was never "that bad". Heck, I think I could have pulled the transmission on my M2 in less time then it took me to do the first oil change on my 9sx last night.

Let's just say loktite red from the factory and a T-27 screwdriver do NOT make a happy combination. Nobody around here has T27 sockets, so I was doing it with a T27 screwdriver and the factory toolkit allen wrench.

My thumbs are still crying. I don't know *what* the factory was thinking putting loktite red on there, especially with those torx heads holding on a plastic part. It's just asking for trouble...

Fortunately, only my thumbs walked away with any permenant damage... Still can't find a T-27 socket, but did find one of those pocketknife like folding torx driver things with the correct size, which should work fine even if it does not ratchet.

I saw this same thing on my 2000 XL 1200 cams, when I changed them for N4s.Mileage was around 30000 Kilometers.
Especially the lobes of 2 and 4 were worn.
Rollers were still o.k.
Never heard any strange sound, nor had I noticed something else remarkable.
Maybe something went wrong during the surface hardening process. It looked like that,IMO.
