I just started my bike and it made a popping noise, it then sounded like it was running on one cylinder and the other one making a whoosh sound kinda like air escaping. I could feel air moving outward from the front motor mount but couldn't see anything. Is this a blown gasket? |

Sounds like a blown head gasket....that sucks. How many miles on the bike? |

8500 miles. I'm taking it to the dealer on Wednesday. This is covered under the extended warranty? |

You're not riding it to the dealer are ya? No. It it did cross my mind though... I really love riding this bike. Now a good time to go with the 1050 kit and stage 1 heads? Who's running the 1050 and is it worth the money?} |

It's always a good time to go for the 1050 kit IF you have the money. And yes...I believe its worth it. I don't have it but I'm sure I will in the future. I know some guys who own Nallin stuff. Nothing but praises. But if it's just a head gasket I'd say have it fixed so you can ride it again. Bike is still under warranty? Ingemar. (Message edited by ingemar on September 27, 2004) |

Did you blow a spark plug out of it's home? |

Interesting thought, I assumed it was the head gasket only because this happened on my HondaXR250 years ago. I will have to check this out when I get home. |

Keep in mind that switching to the 1050 kit will more then likely void your engine warrenty. For it to be covered under warrenty work they will use stock parts. Making an engine mod like that can be very easily seen as an owner modification that can cause problems. If you have the extended, get it in WRITING if the dealer will allow you to get the 1050 kit and not have it void your warrenty. Its not like a cosmetic change but your talking about changing a major engine component. |

Glitch, how the heck did you know it was the sparkplug? I took of the scoop and there it was just hanging there... I don't know if this is good or bad though. There's no gap, it's now touching. The threads are intact but show signs of trauma. Is my head now bad? Or can I put a new plug in? What's the correct gap? |

Take a fresh plug and screw it in and see if it screws in smoothly. Gap should be set at .035inch |

I think they can use threadserts, but I'd want a new head... Have you changed the plugs? |

Spark Plug Heli coil kit. If done properly good as new. However if it were my bike, and still under warranty I would be requesting replacement of the head, not a band aid approach. |

The dealer said he might try the heli-coil to fix. When I asked him if this was going to make the head as good as new or almost as good as new, he said better than new because it's now stainless steel. I have no experience with this so is he speaking the truth? My other concern is that I plan to have head work done, can nrhs work with heads repaired this way? Should ask for a new head? |

It won't hurt to ask for a new head. The worst that could happen would be a "No" My guess is that Aaron and company have seen enough heads to be able to work with what you send them, you'd also know it's "better than new" |

If it were my bike and I wasn't going to use a new head I would insist on a "WURTH" brand insert. They are called "time serts" if I'm not mistaken. They are a 1 piece sleeve and are recommended by name by the German auto industry. |

Timeserts are the gear to use cause they come in all different depths that are far more accurate than the helicoils for this job. Another plus for the time-sert is it has a shoulder for the plug to tighten onto so the plug reach will remain the same (if properly installed. I would have suggested these but they are so hard to come by and very rarely used due to the cost. |

Dealer told me that the request for warranty service was rejected. This bike is still under the original factory warranty! I'm calling the warranty service center myself, but I find this incredibly disturbing. The plugs haven't been touched since the bike left the factory. |
