The Buell left me stranded today! Although I think it was my own dumb a** fault. Heading to work, and I got the check engine light, then the gauges went dead, shortly followed by the whole bike. I removed the seat and found the positive cable "kinda" loose. I tightened the thing up, called another Buell rider from work to jump me off. I made it about two miles, then same scenario everything went dead. This time we left the cables hooked up for about 15-20 minutes. The bike worked great after that with no issues at all. Is it possible that the battery was just too dead to operate the charging system and the bike as well from the first jump? Anyone else experienced this? My feeling is that if it were a regulator or Stator, it would have stayed dead. |

The bike worked great after that with no issues at all. For how long Stator A guess, i would think the the wire leading to the stator has started to wear, and is making intermintent contact, causing the stator to stop charging, again a guess Do all the checks, find out the problem, or carry a cell phone fully charged R |

Sorry, this applies more to tube frame bikes than the XB series, not sure which one you own THe XB seems to be having some trouble with the wire conections behind the head light, ask AL at American Sport Bike, he has some troubles at the last Buell ride home event, and then got it sorted out, if i remember right it was a bad conection, the hard part was finding it, as him i thought he posted a pictorial some where But as a quick check, start the bike, in N, turn the bars side to side, full lock to lock, see if it dies R |

The bike will run fine off a charged battery until the battery discharges. 20 minutes on jumper cables is enough to give it a pretty good charge. I doubt your charging system is functioning... (Message edited by reepicheep on September 21, 2004) |

It's never a good idea to run with a battery that may be discharged, either...that can kill your charging system if it wasn't bad already. |

it's an XB9R .... and did check the output today, and it would be almost 13 volts then drop off, then 13 then drop off, and then just nothing. I hooked up my trusty Fluke and went for a ride around the block... the battery just slowly went down to 11v, so I came back home. This is about all the time I had before heading off to work. I'll try the tests in the MM tomorrow afternoon. Hope it isn't the stator, because I dont have the tool for the clutch diaphragm. |

Rick_a... I would have agreed with you a year ago until somebody showed me a full schematic for the shunt regulator in our tractor engines. As I look at the thing, it seems to me, the charging system sees the *least* stress on a fully discharged battery, less power is being burned off by various parts and is instead being stored in the battery. When the battery is fully charged, the regulator and stator are absorbing all sorts of power and just dumping it as heat... |

I can't say I'd fully agree with that. A failure of any one charging component will tax the rest. Keep reviving a dying/dead battery and you can almost guarantee the rest of your charging system will eventually STB. |

Ok, just in case.. can someone point me in the direction of a good source for a stator?? Hope I don't need it, but I want to plan ahead. |

The Harley part is fine ($130 as I recall), but aftermarket ones (just about any independent shop can order them for you) are about half the price. Errr. For a tube frame anyway. I think the XB's have a new 3 phase stator, so its a different part. Not sure if the aftermarket is up on that new part yet or not. You will need to pull the primary cover to put it in, so you will need a new gasket for that, and a fresh can of mobil 1 gear oil. |

yeah, it's a three phase from the looks of the wiring diagram. My big issue mainly is the tool for the clutch. I am guessing that one isnt cheap. |

Just got off the phone with the local dealer.. no stock, $159!!! 10-14 days lead time. Let's hope it's not the stator. @$!#! |

If it's an XB, shouldn't it still be under warranty? I thought they came with a two year warranty. If it is out of warranty, make sure you test the regulator/rectifier. They have a habit of dying without warning; the good news is they're easier to change and cost less. |

make sure you test the regulator/rectifier How to you test a regulator with a bad stator??? I was told it can not be done How ever to test the stator you can do an ohms test to see if its grounding in the case, you should also unplug the stator and see if its charging, it could be the regulator just stuff to try R |

An 03 XB should still be under warranty, Take it to a dealer and let them fix it. If you fool around with it they may deny your warranty. Do you have an aftermarket can on it????(Sorry Dyna, couldn't resist!!!) |

An 03 XB should still be under warranty, I thought the 03 had a 1 year, and in 04 they extended it to 2 years, but as alwyas i could be wrong, or if it was bought used, is the wrrenty transferable?? R |

I found it!!!It was the Regulator connector! The B+ wire terminal looked like it had gotten loose and toasted the pin and the plastic. Repaired that and now I am back on the road. Thanks for all the help! And about the warranty... I am the second owner, will I still be covered under warranty? |
