If you rely on a Kryptonite brand lock, this is what you might use in case you lose your keys~ http://www.snopes.com/crime/warnings/kryptonite.asp |

Man, I'm a nerd. Not only was I unable to open my EV disc lock with a bic pen, I managed to completely disable the lock so that now it won't open even with the key! Guess I'll keep my day job. Mike |

Yeah it's ILLEGAL here as well but doesn't stop it happening every day. Locks are a good way to get the theives to move to the next bike in the line but since they only want them for parts breaking whatever the lock is securing doesn't seem to be an issue anymore. I come from a town with a total population of 20,000, there is one bike shop that sells suzuki farm bikes, and it is not safe to leave a road bike anywhere, especially Harleys. It's a sad state of affairs but reality. Spike keep trying - the EV disclocks open trust me. I just tested the one on my New York chain that only cost me $300 2 years ago. |

that is a very disturbing news and I was contemplating about purchasing the helmet lock but now I changed my mind about the product and it goes to kryptonite locks as well |

Locks keep honest people honest. If someone wants your stuff bad enough, they will get it regardless how much you have it secured. I guess the part about this whole scenario that I don't like is that the media is now training criminals under the auspices of consumer awareness. |

I'm bummed that I spent $40 on an EV Lock that can be opened by a six year old with a 25¢ pen! Kryptonite has an anti-theft warranty, that pays $500 (on the EV) towards your insurance deductible. Bad news is the thief has to leave evidence of a cut-off lock. I wonder if Kryptonite will accept a Bic pen protruding from the lock cylinder as evidence of a compromised lock? I think Kryptonite should offer current owners at the very least a significant rebate on the purchase of a new lock. Take your old lock to a Kryptonite retailer, get a coupon for X amount off your next lock. If they don't do something to make this right in the eyes of the consumer, they will lose credibility and a majority of their business.. |

Check their web site tomorrow afternoon, there is supposed to be news about exchanges and rebates. Exchanges if you registered your key or filed the theft plan registration or if you bought the lock in the last two years and have proof of purchase. There is supposed to be heavy rebates offered through dealerships for customers who no longer have their purchase receipts or didn't register anything or bought their lock more than two years ago. But hit their website first before going to a dealership as this may be like Buells where we sometimes have to educate the dealerships on issues and programs. |

This might be a hoax. A follow up news story had several people including a locksmith unable to open a lock with a pen. Has anyone successfully done this ? |

This is no hoax, the lock company has confirmed it with their response, and a couple of guys at a local bicycle shop were able to do it as well. More likely this is simply a refreshed example of how the internet can spread news quickly, good or bad, but bad seems to spread wider and faster than good. |

I think it should be mentioned that I highly doubt that Kryptonite or any other manufacturer of security devices makes their own cylindrical locks. That would be a purchased part for them due to the cost of tooling up for it. |
