Hope everybody enjoys my birthday tomorrow! They declared it a national holiday! They call it "Labor Day" but that's just a political thing. They decided calling it "John Koehler's Birthday" would just confuse people. Too many people were asking, "John who?"

Happy B-Day John!

Nice to be in the company of another National Holiday Celeb.

They made my 21st a one time holiday and made me watch some guy walking on the moon for the first time. Now that was more than enough motivation to go out and celebrate (read: get drunk) especially since I was in the Army at the time. LOL

Enjoy!!!

Thanks everyone! I had a pretty good day but unfortunately I have bad news. I hit the pavement! On my birthday!

I was pulling into the parking lot of a small strip mall. At the end of the entrance you can turn either right or left plus there are cars coming toward you from a back parking lot. I was turning left and there was a car at the stop sign in front of me. Right in the middle of the turn I thought I saw the car moving forward. I hit the brake and the next thing I knew I was on the pavement! Luckily I wasn't going very fast. I am fine and the only broken parts on the bike are both left turn signals and the shift linkage. Right now it won't run. I can't get it in neutral with the broken shift linkage. It did start and run once for just a few seconds. I am guessing that either the clutch switch or the side stand switch aren't working right.

Not a good ending to my birthday! Oh well, at least I'm OK and the bike is not too bad. Will have to get new shift linkage and figure out which interlock switch is not working.

I figured out that it's the clutch switch. I'm not sure if it's really broken or just not lined up right. Sometimes the starter would crank and sometimes it wouldn't. I unpluged the clutch switch and jumpered it with a paper clip. That solved it, now it always cranks. I rode it forward in the garage so the sidestand switch is OK.

Still can't ride it because I can't shift! I called the dealer yesterday and they had to order the shift linkage. It's supposed to be here sometime next week. I tried to rig up a pair of vice grips but gave that up. I was able to shift into second and back down to first sitting in the garage (I still can't find neutral) but it's too awkward and the vice grips kept getting knocked off. I figure it would be smart to just wait until the shift linkage comes in.

Oh well, at least it starts, runs and moves forward in the garage. Will just have to be a little while before I'm back on the road.

Another thing, now that I've thought about it, it didn't happen in the middle of the turn like I thought. The bike was down right at the start of the turn. I thought it happened in the middle because thats where I ended up!

I came up to the turn and had just started to turn. I saw the car move forward and I panicked and grabbed the front brake. Result? Down I went! I really don't remember anything between seeing the car start to move and laying on the pavement. I remember thinking, how did I end up here?

John...Sorry to learn of your Whoops, but glad to hear you are ok. Hope you get the parts soon. Looks like we are in for a great fall riding season.

Thats been my experience with the front wheel loosing traction. Lock up the back wheel? You know because you feel the bike start to get crossed up... no big deal, ride it out, don't release if you are too crossed or you could highside.

How do you know if you locked up the front wheel? Because you are sliding down the pavement a short ways behind your motorcycle thinking "how the hell did I get here".

Your milage *won't* vary ; )

1) Happy Birthday, Late
2) I'm glad you weren't hurt
3) We've all done the same thing, at one time or another. (Last time I fell down, it was during an unexpected snowfall. I almost made it home when I tried to go left too fast(15 MPH). I bent my bars, mangled my beautiful Banke shifter, scraped the bar end pretty good and bent my clutch lever.) Falling down always sucks.
