I'm new to Buell having had an 03 XB9S for less than 3 weeks and about 900 miles. The label on the bike says 91 pump octane which seems clear. But I've read mention of using 87 octane. I have an 03 Ducati Monster 1000S and the owner's manual says 95 research which is purely a lab number. Here we use R+M/2 for pump numbers. Most guys on the Monster board use 87 as I do. Engines have similar compression ratios and displacement, except the Duc feels quite a bit stronger. What are you experienced Buellers using? | ||

The premium expensive pump gas, usually listed between 91-94 octane by whatever measure formula they're using in both the M2 and S2. Both bikes seem happy and make funny noises if I use the lower regular grade of 85-87octane stuff. Not sure how the bikes are with the higher ratio gasohol stuff some regions have. | ||

for the first 8000 miles i used only 90 octane premium in my XB12. that is the best i can find within 200 miles of home. since i bought wife a M620 monster, we have been using 87 octane in both bikes. they are both running fine. Buell now has 9400 miles, seems to like 87 just fine. | ||

Note: Fullpower is in Alaska, they most likely have different fuel mixtures there. YMMV! Since premium's easy to find around here, and at most we're talking another $0.50 a fillup, I go with the good stuff. | ||

The hotter climates like AZ,NM,SoCal and such, its been my experience if I don't run atleast 92, it pings on really hot days. XB9rski might have other comments as he was commuting between AZ and SoCal on his XB9. I have the XB12. | ||

I'm sweating in the desert too. I've had the same experience as wycked. Nothing but the good stuff since it only takes 5 bucks to top it off! (also experiencing outstanding mileage!) | ||

I Sweden our regular is 95, but I like to treat her good so I only give her the premium stuff and thats 98 octane, and then you should know that gas is expensive! in sweden, I pay more then $1.4 for a liter and it takes 4.54 liter on a gallon, only the best thing is good enough for my baby. | ||

Besides, the difference between 87 and 91 is only about 20 cents at just about any station. At under 3 gallons per fillup, that equates to under 60 cents per tank more for premium. Is that too much to spend for a happier bike and peace of mind? | ||

Anyone around here in the gas station business??? I am wondering how much regular gasoline may still be in the hose/inline filter when I gas up at a place that has multiple grades of gasoline and only one nozzle. Am I stupid to think that I would end up with a lower octane from the remainder in the hose is mixed in the tank if I am only pumping small amounts to top off a tank if I repeatedly do that? What would be the treshold for a ping problem due to octane? 87..88...89...90...91...92??? would only timing or some other mechanical issue cause pinging??? and it would be impossible for the lowered octane from small topoffs when only regular gas was left in the hose when I selected premium? 2 oz??? 6 oz??? 20 oz??? anyone know??? an XB tank is pretty small... and I would think a bunch of small top off the tank would have some decrease in octane resulting from pushing the regular out of the system before it started pushing premium... and if you only often needed a small top off... would you not get lowered octane from the mix??? Someone please humor me... Forget everything I posted above... and yes I will concede I am stupid... just ask anyone I work with... they will tell you! simple question... no other debate wanted... from the switching valve on the pump system to the control valve on the nozzle. Does anyone know the volume of the liquid between those two points at your typical gas pump. Don't care about any of the other crap... JUST THAT!!! (formerly dasxb9s - the older I am... the dumber I get... just ask the kids at work) | ||

Fact or guess... in a hose ... what 1/2 inch ID... 7 foot long??? I bet if I took a garden hose 7 foot long and capped one end and filled it with water... it would be more than 2 or 3 oz! Now add an in line filter... and there is more volume to factor in. The switching valve I would guess would be in the pump housing not in the nozzle in your hand!!! (formerly dasxb9s - still not seeing how) | ||

OK... Just went to my shop... cut 7 foot of 5/8 ID hose. filled it with water... it held 19 oz! The switching valve HAS to be in the pump housing... so it for a fact is more than 2 or 3 oz left in the line between the switching valve and the valve on the nozzle... no matter what grade of gas it would be!
