KTM LC8. Quite light, about 135 lbs (without water and radiator, of course). BUT, some serious issues out in the real world. The streetfighter version of it was supposed to be launched more than two years ago and it has yet to make it. A roadrace version couldn't stay together long enough to even qualify for the 24 hour race recently in Germany (yes, an XB did qualify). The word from insiders is that the motor is quite noisy, has poor emissions performance, and breaks as soon as any real power is put out. I think there are and would be better choices for a Buell, and that if they do another engine it will be a lot better than this one. |

I love how every one has there Ideas of what motor Buell should have built. Makes me chuckle. The Buell Motor or Lump as some of you may call it is a awsome power plant. ANd it's simplicity is it's complexity. I Have takin a Buell with X1 cams stock XB heads an 12R pistons and have produced over 90 HP a number that made a NASCAR engineer say wow (this engineer also owns 3 Buells one with a 88" with over 130hp) If you like top speed get a liter bike, you want a bad AZZ tourqe monster consult Mr. Buell Thanks for your support Spidey in '04 |

I will say I had high hopes for that engine, but what is good on paper and therory does not always pan out. |

It comes down to this on power. Keep the Buells in the realm they were made for and the "other" bikes in the realm they were made for. I prefer back twisted roads to all out speed. But that is me.... |

How about the Rotax made engine that lives inside the new Aprilla Mille. Its 1000cc producing around 122-125rwhp in stock form and a very relaible powerplant. |

I was just saying that all the R&D and Buell put into the XB's in my own opinion they should tapped into H-D's bank account to develop a overhead cam water cooled V-twin, and they might be for a future version of the XB, only time will tell. I'm not bashing the new XB power plant, its a great motor, redesigning the XL, dropping 40 pounds and adding all that new technology is what the XB needed, I guess I'm still dreaming of a water cooled Buell!! Guys - the LC8 is the same motor that has won numerous Paris-Dakar's rallies. In the 950 format in the KTM adventure it has been quite bullet-proof - with 120 horses and good torque. The 990 LC9 is the 950 bored out - some issues in balancing & with the Duke chassis overall. Still an nice, EXTEMELY compact and LIGHT powerplant! |

The 950 in it's wildest dreams may have put out 120HP, but not in the real world. In low power trim as required for Paris-Dacar it's OK, but not when pushed. And the Rotax, the Ducati and all Japanese DOHC H2O twins put it to shame as a powerhouse. Paris-Dacar is certainly a cool feat, but it's far from what is needed for a Buell. Sorry, but that's the truth, as opposed to the BS out of Stefan Pirer's PR factory... |

The engine I want in a future Buell doesn't exist and probably never will. It'd still be a twin, it'd still be AIR/oil cooled, it would still have self adjusting valves, it'd still probably only put out ONLY 110 Hp in street EPA compliant trim. Heck, I think it would still even have a knife/fork connecting rod arrangement with the cylinders in line. Not sure about the V angle, but it might be a little wider than 45 degrees. But it would have overhead cams to reduce reciprocating valve train mass, an even more sophisticated air ducting system that utilized cast fin alignments that made sense based on an intelligently planned forced convection path instead of how it looks naked on a sporty. And it might even have integrated cast in heat pipes in the cylinder heads for passive high-efficiency heat transfer from the internal hot spots to external large convective areas. It would still likely use a dry sump engine with a separate reservoir. It would have a cassette transmission. It would still have a constant tension belt drive. It would come from the factory with nicasil (or similar) aluminum bores. It would likely have dual intake manifolds/throttle bodies, but only if it was cake to keep them synched. Seems like the latter must be easy now that they all have throttle position sensors...can't they just be dialed in via output signal from the TPS instead of having to do the whole vacuum gauge thing like I used to on my carbed IL4s and twins? Oh, and you could zero the TPS and reset the AFV with a Laptop and a USB cable. I doubt my engine will ever see the light, but that's the one I'D build. Al |

Al, the only problem I see with that engine is the laptop and usb cable requirement. It should be able to be done self contained. Shoot, slap on a digital dash and build in the computer. If a full functioning computer can be built into a size factor that fits in the palm of your hand then slapping one into a bike should be a relatively conceptually simple matter. |
